Hapa Ramen -- What price ramen? [San Francisco]

My 2 cents - the ramen there and at the ferry building were nothing spectacular, underwhelming if anything. Considering the line at the ferry building and the price, one would think it'd be a quality bowl, but alas it is not.

I almost see this organic/hipster/new wave ramen thing coming up with this and the Ramen Shop in Oakland/berkeley - and there is nothing good about it. So many detracting ingredients that remove from the essence from what a great bowl of ramen should be.

Take for instance - Yamada-ya or Tsujita (tonkotsu, not their tsukemen) - these are what ramen shops should be like; not these new $18 bowl of watery and totally conflicted noodles.

Not at all surprised at all over the Yelp comments on Hapa.

Gum Kuo--no duck congee, but fresh rice noodle rolls [Oakland]

Good, but strangely inferior to Sam Woo's of Southern California.

best dim sum Bay Area, late 2014?

Latest 2 visits to East Bay Saigon Seafood Harbor have been pretty good, aside from the XO sauce turnip cake.

Particular standouts were:
- chicken feet
- har gow
- braised beef & beef tendon (I'd come back just for this)

Poor selections were:
- xo stir fried turnip cake (did no try the regular pan fried turnip cake)
- shu mai (texture and taste were just both off)

Value is great, even with a 20 minute wait (which is nothing in the world of weekend dim sum waits). Some dishes are not as good as Koi Palace, but has a much better value rating.

...Still nothing that can match LA dim sum though...

Uni Donburri

I know of none that are worthy in the Bay Area, but if you are eer in LA, try Sushi Nozomi in Torrance during lunchtime. Last I remembered it, it contained roughly twice the amount of uni as the Tanto picture below.

Also unknown to some and rather sporadic - Mitsuwa everywhere occasionally does uni dons - but as I said, is very sporadic. When it does happen, it's $8.99 for a bowl of uni n rice!

Where to eat in Cancun

La Palalpa Belga - although it has been some years since I've last gone and have that it's gone downhill a bit since then.

Dungeness Crab Prices 2014/2015 Season

You guys all know that it's extremely sad that while we are paying around $5 a lb up here where the crab comes in, while Southern California is paying $3.99/lb at numerous locations...

What time do I have to show up to get Tsujita tonkotsu ramen

That's not a joke, lol! It's actually a pint sized container that they gave me to pack up the remnants of my regular tonkotsu ramen.

Although it looks gnarly, I still go back for the same ramen time and time again (along with a side order of Furaibo wings across the street).

Someone recommend me a cardiologist soon.

What time do I have to show up to get Tsujita tonkotsu ramen

You guys do know that there is a reason you can't order Tsujita's tonkotsu to go right? I got a bowl to go after trying to stuff 2 different ramen and a bowl of rice down in the same setting. This is the result.

Tasty still, just not in the cold state.

Best Dim Sum in the Bay

I won't get into the dim sum debate of North vs South CA but KOI Palace has not been that enjoyable for me, especially with value accounted for.

If dungeness crab is what you're seeking, Seafood Village on Nogales in Rowland Heights offers a fried up live crab for $12 (GO NOW!!).

Does dim sum just suck in San Fran?

I'd like to echo this sentiment that Richmond BC is strides beyond any other Chinese food I've eaten. While I haven't explored all of Hong Kong's dim sum parlors, my dim sum experience in Richmond surpasses that of even LA (which is 3 steps above SF).

No joke - LA prices of $1.88 per small order is better than anything Koi Palace or any Bay Area place puts out, while Richmond puts out things that no LA place can touch, even if it was $3 per order.

Park's vs. Kang Hodong Baekjeong?

I am going to take a look, but I called the DTLA location and they were thinking Thursday or Friday...

Park's vs. Kang Hodong Baekjeong?

Summed up in 2 sentences:

Parks has higher quality beef. KHB has a better execution on everything else on the menu.

Neither had memorable panchan...
Lunchbox rice was worth ordering at KHB, as is the pork jowl (they call it neck). Beef is of a higher quality at Parks, again.

Shin Sen Gumi Hakata Ramen - The WLA Broth War Thickens

AGREED! Mediocre chashu at best at ShinSenGumi. The chashu at Daikokuya in Jtown used to be the best (was never a huge fan of Santouka), but with the declining quality over the years, I hereby crown the new best chashu to be at.........Jidaiya in Torrance! Had some today and it was awesome!

Shin Sen Gumi Hakata Ramen - The WLA Broth War Thickens

No actually, annex is more salty, and 3x heavier.

Having said that, I still like it if I'm extra hungry.
As for the original Tsujita, I have their tonkotsu #1 in my books in all of LA - but this is all subjective.

Orange county mobile Japanese knife sharpening?

It was not, and from my memory, his website was sort of Wordpressy. His website did explain that he used whetstones exclusively and can do certain grids upon request...

Orange county mobile Japanese knife sharpening?

A while back, someone mentioned a mobile OC guy that uses whetstones to sharpen. Does anyone know of a place that does whetstone sharpening in the OC?

I last had some knives sharpened at Anzen in Japantown, but I am not impressed at all by his work...My MAC & Global knives came out marginally sharper; it is a good thing I did not drop off the Konosuke.

reasonably priced sushi to impress the out-of-towners

Respectfully disagree on Hamamori.

he place is more gimmickery than substance. Yes, hey serve large live santa barbara spot prawns, but the fish is not top notch. The more important measure though, is he lack of finesse in the fish cuts. The most important tell tale of a sushi place not being true to its roots: the presence of the california roll on the menu.

Sushi Wasabi used to be the best choice in Orange County, but there are so many better ones now- Give Ohshima or Nana San (ankimo is the best in all of southern cal) a try.

Where to buy rock shrimp in OC or LA?

Thanks all-
Nay on Whole Foods Tustin, Trader Joes, Bristol Farms (newport), or Santa Monica Seafood. Will give Gelson's a try. Will also look in freezers of Ranch 99 and Shun Fat. I have a feeling that Shun Fat is merely the Santa Barbara red spotted prawns, as opposed to rock shrimp though.

Where to buy rock shrimp in OC or LA?

I've been looking to buy some rock shrimp to cook up as the texture of that stuff is amazing compared to regular shrimp. Has anyone seen any? I've seen it once in a while at Bear Flag Fish Company in Newport but the quality isn't that great there on this stuff...

French influence? [moved from Mexico]

you know what's weird though? I stumbled onto what appeared to be a small carnival in downtown playa and in addition to the regular elotes and churros being sold, there were quite a few push carts selling crepes!

Recs for Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cancun

I recently found a taco stand named Taqueria Honorio in Tulum that serves EXCELLENT tacos de lechon. To find it, go down 307 towards Tulum from Playa. You'll pass an intersection where you can make a right to go to Coba. a few blocks down, you'll see a Swiss bank on the left hand side, on the other corner on the left side at that intersection is this taco stand.

I also had the opportunity to have cochinita pibil tacos at Taqueria Tony's, which is recommended by Veggo, They were good, but I think the cochinita at the Honorio is slightly better.

Pic of Taqueria Tony's tacos - (sorry, I dug into it too fast)

Playa Del Carmen- Restaurant Recos?

La Bamba Jarocha is on the north east corner of 30th & 34th. Someone told me to go to that corner, and gave me the wrong restaurant name, but later made the connection. I was recommended their aguachile - which I will try tomorrow.

Had Oasis's aguachile today - and thought it was good, but not great (and yes, Oasis is open in PDC).

Where to buy great Serrano in Orange County?

Been looking for a store to buy Serrano and also Iberico in Orange County. I've been to La Espanola, and when lazy, just go to Bristol Farms. Any other places?
