Pommeau de Normandie

Anyone been able to find Pommeau de Normandie in Vancouver?

Bought some in France in the fall when we were there and now it is all gone. Looking to see if we can get it here. The BCLStores don't carry it, so wonder if any private stores import it.

Sweetbreads in Vancouver?

Cool - I will check it out.

Sweetbreads in Vancouver?

Thanks - looking forward to giving it a try. I had them fried in Paris so will try that method.

Sweetbreads in Vancouver?

Thanks all - having never bought them - espensive? cheap?
Any tips on preparing them ?

Sweetbreads in Vancouver?

Thanks eatrustic,
I think I may have found a place in Burnaby - Cioffi's Meat and Deli - so will have to give them a ring.
Where in Vancouver do you get them? We are willing to travel to purchase them.

We were in Normandy for 6 days and then Paris for 4 days - it was wonderful. If you need any recs for dining the France CHOW board is great or I can give you a few that we dined at.

Hopefully the strikes aren't an issue for you!

Sweetbreads in Vancouver?

I just returned from France and had for the first time sweetbreads at a restaurant in Paris and loved them. So now we want to try and cook them here at home but am trying to figure out where in Vancouver we could buy them.

Any ideas - specialty butchers? We live in the Tri Cities area if there is anything around here.

Thanks!

Normandy help

My husband and I just returned from the Normandy area and have a few suggestions. We didn't go to all the spots you are and eat so we can only make a suggestion for Honfleur.

We ate at L'Homme de Bois and thought it was a great meal for a good price. Cosy atmosphere and very nice service. I am not sure about their opening hours so check out their website for details.

Several people at our B&B ate at Sa.Qua.Na and said it was fantastic. We passed as all our budget for food was to be spent in Paris ;-) otherwise we would have eaten there.

We had a really quick dinner in Bayeux after doing a tour with Battlebus and just ate at The Drakkar. The onion soup was ok but the Moules and Frites were terrific and good on the wallet. I have heard that Table de Terrior is a good place in Bayeux.

Good luck and have a great time.

Alert: I am in need of a favor from anyone traveling to Bayeux

We had a great time and Normandy was lovely. Would love to go back there in the summer with our kids one year and enjoy some of the beaches.

Unfortunately we didn't get to spend too much time in Bayeaux as we did 2 days of D-Day beach tours and our 3rd day we drove to Mont Saint Michel.

We ate in a restaurant in Bayeaux once - called the Drakkar - just a quick dinner of Moules and Frites - which were fabulous.

Ernie,

Just returned from our trip and unfortunately we never got a chance to head to the Calvados farm. Sorry I wish I could have helped. We ended up just buying some at a local store in Bayeaux as it was convenient. I bought some Pommeau and my husband some 25 year old Calvados.

Quick - Cafe Suggestion!

We ended up meeting at Cafe D'Alma since it was a spectacular day last Friday and I wanted a terrace spot. It was lovely spot and quiet too. Too bad I had only packed for colder/wetter days as I was dying to get out of my walking shoes and into some shorts and sandals that day!

We watched a very stylish 80+ lady next to us dining by herself as she finished a 3 course meal of steak tartare, steak & frites and fruit for dessert, plus wine followed by her smoking a big fat cigar. Guess that is the secret to looking good and living long!

Quick - Cafe Suggestion!

Thanks John - we won't be eating there - just meeting for coffee/drinks at 3pm. Can you do that there or is it only for food?

Quick - Cafe Suggestion!

Hi

We are in Paris and we are planning to meet another couple we know who happens to be in Paris at the same time as us on Friday.

I need a suggestion as to where we could meet for coffee/drinks.

They are near Trocadero and we are near Place St. Michel. We were planning on being in the 8th 15th that day to do some sightseeing but I am sure places near the Champs and the Tower are touristy and pricy.

Any suggestions that come to mind? I know there are millions of cafes so it could be kind of pointless.....

Thanks!

Trip report: La Regalade,Chez Denise, etc...

Thanks for the comments on Constant. I had it on my list to have lunch - but really I am not particularly drawn to it - just convenience for where we will be for lunch. I think I might check out some other options for that day, since overpaying isn't really what we are looking for.

Ready to make our Reservations - Now What?

Just called Le Regalade and got a gentleman who spoke english. We did have two reservations (Oct 6th and 8th) so I confirmed Oct 6th and cancelled Oct 8th.....so if anyone wants a lunch reservation for 2 at 1pm on the 8th...it is now available! (not sure how booked up they are.

Thanks Oakglen - appreciate the details - sounds wonderful. I would probably say I do better conversing in french face to face (can always gain more by facial expressions etc.) It is nice to know we have lots of options when we are there.

Good advice...we will probably confirm all our reservations when we arrive in Normandy on Sept 29th.

Thanks Nancy - the gentleman in paris who made our reservation said he hadn't eaten there but that it all seemed quite complicated. (agreed!)

I think I better have a back up lunch reservation...

Ready to make our Reservations - Now What?

You could be right JO...uggh...I should have brushed up on my french restaurant words ;-) And I intially said I wanted to confirm a reservation that my friend had made.

I just called Josephine and booked dinner on the 8th anyway.

I may try again later to fix the Le Regalade but maybe for now I have two lunch reservations and can cancel one later on.

Ready to make our Reservations - Now What?

Update ...

Le Petrelle confirmed - very nice man on the phone who spoke english. Yay.

The man whom we are renting our apartment from in Paris was kind enough to call Le Regalade to book our lunch. However, he emailed me and said that they told him I had to call to confirm. So I called today, but the lady didn't speak English so I told her I wanted to confirm a reservation on Oct 6th - but she said they were closed on the 6th. (I have sent an email back to him to confirm that he did indeed book something for us on the 6th)

I am trying to figure out why they would be closed on a Wednesday for lunch? And she did say 'fermer' and I repeated it so I am pretty sure that is what she meant. So I made one for Oct 8th just to book something until I figure this all out.

Thanks for the heads up - if we have a late lunch that day we may have to choose a different spot for dinner or just eat at home.

Ready to make our Reservations - Now What?

Any comments on if these restaurants have any English speaking staff? Our host for our Paris apartment has kindly offered to make a reservation for me - but I don't want make him book them all - just the ones that might only speak French.

I have booked Balzar online already and won't make a reservation for Le Rubis until we get there. I understand Petrelle will be fine as they speak English so I am wondering about the last three:

Le Regalade
Le Reminet
Chez Josephine

Thanks

Agree with Parigi here - great post and I love how you break it down by dish as well. But why the trip to try something bad - giving it a 2nd chance at redemption?

Kind of food related question...

Thanks everyone, that is what I figured just after I posted that thread I realized the probably get lunches at school. Some suggestions anyways that I can go take a look at.

I am kind of looking for ones with little compartments so the bento boxes might work quite well too - but I may be able to find those locally - will have to find out first.

Thanks again!

Kind of food related question...

Anyone know where I can get lunch boxes in Paris? Kids lunch boxes that is.

I want to bring home some presents for my two girls (8 and 5) and thought it would be cool to bring home some 'European' kids lunchboxes...but I am having a hard time finding anything specific on the internet and thought I would ask my fellow foodies here. I wanted to source a location before I go so I am not scouring all over Paris for days.

Any ideas? Or do the kids not take lunch to school?

Mais oui, our apartment has a phone so we will use it to confirm once we arrive. I would prefer to have our reservations confirmed before we leave home.
