The Costco Thread - Ontario - 2014 - July to September

I saw them too, but wasn't sure if they'd be worth the price since I've never heard of them before. Have you tried Alphonso or Kesar mangoes before?

Frankie Tomatoe's

Mandarin serves snow crab, not king.

Great find!! - California Black Velvet Apricots at Costco.

Mine were delicious as well! Combined with the Rainier cherries, I'm in fruit heaven this week :)

2014 Restaurant and Food Store OPENINGS!!

They are definitely baked overseas and shipped frozen. See if the donuts/muffins on this page look familiar:

Chatime also carries some of the same donuts/muffins and I've seen them take it out of the freezer.

2014 Restaurant and Food Store OPENINGS!!

Grand opening of Lucky Red is this Wednesday. Can't wait to try this place!

Estrella Taqueria: New Taco Place Opening in North York

Imo, this place wouldn't have survived anywhere. The food was nowhere near the quality of the popular downtown spots but at the same price point. I really wanted to like this place as an uptown option for tacos would be awesome, but after 2 visits I gave up..

Big Jack Burger - Woodbine, south of Hwy#7

I've been there twice... first time was their grand opening and it was decent but the wait was long. second time I was shocked my burger was ready so fast and it was terrible. My friend went before the lunch rush a day after and saw them precooking dozens of patties in anticipation of the rush (30 minutes away) which explains why I hated my second burger. I'll never go there again. Fresh Burger on Leslie is so much better.

2014 Restaurant and Food Store OPENINGS!!

I went by Lucky Red a few days ago and they weren't open, so those articles were wrong about June 6. They have a twitter feed now and say they are opening this month:

The Costco Thread - Ontario - 2014 - April to June

Has anybody seen the baby organic superfood blend lately? It was a 1lb bag from I think Earth Greens and contained baby kale, spinach and chard. I've been buying at least a bag a week for the last 6 months, but haven't seen it in a few weeks at the Warden location.

The Costco Thread - Ontario - 2014 - April to June

Has anyone tried the Kirkland Greek Yogurt? I've been buying the Liberte Greek since imo, it still has the best texture out of all the other yogurts there, but I'm not happy that they changed it a couple months ago:
- They changed to organic and increased the price ($1 or $2 more)
- They reduced the number of blueberry (my favourite) from 6 to 3 and increased the vanilla (my least favourite) from 3 to 6
- The organic version has less pieces of whole fruit. It's more like a puree now.

Dragon Legend reviews?

I've only been to Dragon Pearl for lunch a few times over a year ago and I've been to Dragon Legend recently for dinner. While I agree that Mandarin is one of the better Asian buffets, I'd say the food quality at Dragon Pearl and Legend is even better. I actually think the Peking duck I had at Dragon Legend is better than quite a few restaurants (although not Dayali level obviously). Dim Sum was below average though.

One thing you should be aware of at Dragon Legend is it gets crowded. The parking lot is a mess when it gets busy and there are long lines for the food. You have to line up to be served the duck and sashimi, and this can sometimes take almost 10 minutes.

Yep, I saw a ton at Warden today at the end of an aisle as well, not with the other jams/peanut butter.

Yang's Chinese Seafood Cuisine, Markham - An Impromptu Giant Lobster Feast

Thanks for the recommendation Charles! The salted duck yolk preparation of the lobster was indeed the highlight of the meal, but every dish was great, including the free range chicken with spring onion. The complementary red bean baked bun with the flaky, buttery crust was a stand out as well!

Food Events - 2014 (Toronto area and rest of Ontario)

Taste of Toronto presale tickets are on sale now (For Amex Front of the Line). Pretty good line up of chefs/restaurants so far. This is run by an international group and the first time it's come to North America:

FYI, these were on clearance for $12.97 at the Warden location. I only saw about 10 packs left though.

The Costco Thread - Ontario - 2014 - April to June

Thanks!! Which location were the pistachios at? Was there a lot left?

The Costco Thread (Ontario - 2014 - part 1)

Bought a jar for $2.97 at Warden Costco last week, so looks like it's being discontinued.

The Costco Thread (Ontario - 2014 - part 1)

I bought the Matilde Vicenzi Millefoglie D'italia. Really nice and flaky. Delicious! 330g doesn't sound like much, but each cookie is very light.

The Costco Thread (Ontario - 2014 - part 1)

Thanks! I guess it doesn't matter that much to me if they are actually wild... Like you, I just prefer the taste of those ones over the giant ones that are labeled cultivated.

The Costco Thread (Ontario - 2014 - part 1)

Are the Kirkland blueberries wild or cultivated?? I hope they don't get rid of the current wild ones by Moov. The Moov ones recently changed from organic to just say certified pesticide free, but are still wild.

The Costco Thread (Ontario - 2014 - part 1)

Warden location had less than a dozen blocks left tonight... no idea if they are getting more, but I would guess no if other locations are stopping.

'Skyview Fusion Chinese' - Sorry folks! Another relatively new kid on the block. This one could be the best 'early-bird' Dim Sum in the GTA?!

Do you know what their non-early bird prices are like? Thanks!

The Costco Thread (Ontario - 2014 - part 1)

Noticed the Moov frozen wild blueberries are no longer certified organic. They now say wild boreal blueberries and certified pesticide free. I still bought a bag but haven't opened it yet since I still have a quarter bag of my current one left.

Loblaws "aged" New York strip - disappointing

Didn't try them, but striploins were $25/lb. Prime, dry-aged minimum 28 days.

The Costco Thread - new products, old favourites, interesting items

The caviar was on clearance for $49.97. It's from Canada (BC). Best before is February 2014. Haven't tried it yet.

Wow! Really Bad Asian food in Richmond Hill.

I don't see where Charles beat down on this restaurant other than his post against someone who obviously (imo) seemed affiliated with the restaurant. In response to your post, he admitted maybe the owners made changes and also mentioned how opinions sometimes vary widely.

I went here once a couple months ago for lunch and thought it was terrible. Rarely do I not give a place a second chance, but this is one I won't be going back to unless I see a LOT more positive feedback here.

2013 Alphonso Mangos

Does anyone know any stores in Scarborough that would have them?

Italian Truffle Salt

I just bought this at Costco Warden. It was on clearance for $14.97. 100ml oil, 40g salt.
Product of Italy. Ingredients: Olive oil, flavouring, sea salt, black summer truffles.

I'm guessing the "flavouring" is used in the oil instead of actual truffles (which is why a lot of people hate truffle oil), but I paid a similar price for just a bottle of PC Black Label truffle oil recently and thought it tasted decent.

Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto

I was the one that wrote that... I picked up 2 dozen on a Friday afternoon and there were tons left. It was $18.75/dozen all in vs $3.50+tax (~$4) at Pusateris... Like 60% cheaper.

Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto

Well I guess this has been answered, but I was just about to write that I didn't notice maple either... I normally like maple though, so if there was a small amount, I probably wouldn't have noticed anyways. I also agree that it may be the raisins that are giving that impression.
