The Costco Thread (Ontario - 2014 - part 1)

Bought a jar for $2.97 at Warden Costco last week, so looks like it's being discontinued.

I bought the Matilde Vicenzi Millefoglie D'italia. Really nice and flaky. Delicious! 330g doesn't sound like much, but each cookie is very light.

Thanks! I guess it doesn't matter that much to me if they are actually wild... Like you, I just prefer the taste of those ones over the giant ones that are labeled cultivated.

Are the Kirkland blueberries wild or cultivated?? I hope they don't get rid of the current wild ones by Moov. The Moov ones recently changed from organic to just say certified pesticide free, but are still wild.

Warden location had less than a dozen blocks left tonight... no idea if they are getting more, but I would guess no if other locations are stopping.

'Skyview Fusion Chinese' - Sorry folks! Another relatively new kid on the block. This one could be the best 'early-bird' Dim Sum in the GTA?!

Do you know what their non-early bird prices are like? Thanks!

Noticed the Moov frozen wild blueberries are no longer certified organic. They now say wild boreal blueberries and certified pesticide free. I still bought a bag but haven't opened it yet since I still have a quarter bag of my current one left.

The caviar was on clearance for $49.97. It's from Canada (BC). Best before is February 2014. Haven't tried it yet.

Wow! Really Bad Asian food in Richmond Hill.

I don't see where Charles beat down on this restaurant other than his post against someone who obviously (imo) seemed affiliated with the restaurant. In response to your post, he admitted maybe the owners made changes and also mentioned how opinions sometimes vary widely.

I went here once a couple months ago for lunch and thought it was terrible. Rarely do I not give a place a second chance, but this is one I won't be going back to unless I see a LOT more positive feedback here.

Does anyone know any stores in Scarborough that would have them?

Italian Truffle Salt

I just bought this at Costco Warden. It was on clearance for $14.97. 100ml oil, 40g salt.
Product of Italy. Ingredients: Olive oil, flavouring, sea salt, black summer truffles.

I'm guessing the "flavouring" is used in the oil instead of actual truffles (which is why a lot of people hate truffle oil), but I paid a similar price for just a bottle of PC Black Label truffle oil recently and thought it tasted decent.

Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto

I was the one that wrote that... I picked up 2 dozen on a Friday afternoon and there were tons left. It was $18.75/dozen all in vs $3.50+tax (~$4) at Pusateris... Like 60% cheaper.

Well I guess this has been answered, but I was just about to write that I didn't notice maple either... I normally like maple though, so if there was a small amount, I probably wouldn't have noticed anyways. I also agree that it may be the raisins that are giving that impression.

Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto

So I just bought 2 dozen butter tarts from Maid's Cottage. After paying $14+tax for 4 of them at Pusateri's earlier in the week, I felt like I was stealing them at $18.75/dozen including tax lol...

Toronto’s Best Butter Tarts Aren’t in Toronto

Yeah, I don't remember ever having a better butter tart. For me, it'd be perfect if they made the shell a bit less deep or put a bit more filling in. The filling on the ones I bought only came 2/3 of the way up the crust so there was a bit too much crust for my tastes...
But Phipps I wasn't that impressed with even before eating these... I can't picture ever buying them again now =P

I just had Maid's Cottage for the first time and imo, it blows Phipps away... The only part of Phipps I thought was good was the crust.

Where can I find chana masala spice mix

Yes, that's a lot cheaper too, which is why I started with "If you're lazy". I made butter chicken sauce from scratch before and bought all the individual spices which I remember were fairly cheap. But then my whole pantry started smelling like the spices and I had to store them in air tight containers. As someone who only makes this stuff a few times a year, I'd gladly pay the premium for a pre-measured kit where the spices are sealed in a foil bag.

Where can I find chana masala spice mix

If you're lazy, one of the better kits I've tried is Gourmantra... I bought this for the first time at CNE a few years ago, but have seen it at Metro and Costco (might not be at Costco any more). Comes with spices, tomato paste, and rice. You need chick peas and an onion.
Their butter chicken is also good. Add chicken and cream I think.

Experienced an almost perfect wine pairing for Cantonese Seafood at Maple Yip.

Thanks again for the tips! Had the red hind grouper, crab with rice in lotus leaf, chicken stuffed with glutinous rice, beef tenderloin, seafood bird's nest, and some veggies. Everything was prepared perfectly and the favourite ended up being the chicken! I was surprised when they brought a whole chicken out and ended up cutting it at the table, realizing that it was deboned. Nice crispy skin, moist meat and very tasty rice!
The grouper was also really good, but at $57 (I think it was about 2.5lbs), I don't know if I'd get it again over a cheaper variety that I'm sure would be cooked just as perfectly. I'm glad I tried it though.

Thanks Charles! I went to pre-order the grouper, chicken with glutinous rice, and crab with rice in lotus leaf. They said they won't know which of the red hind or strawberry grouper they'll have until a few days before. I forgot you wrote "Barn", so I said "Bahn" to the woman and she had no clue what I wanted (A "red board"? lol). My Cantonese was good enough to tell her it's a fish though.

Looks fantastic! I'm planning to take my family there next weekend. How much did this cost (how many lbs) and was it noticeably better than the Red? Can you give an English pronunciation of what this would be called in Cantonese? You did a great job for the Strawberry Grouper in another thread!

Big Meal, a new Japanese all-you-can-eat with table service

How did you get multiple orders of the red tuna? When I was there, the menu said each guest is only allowed one item from their "specials", which included baked scallop, red tuna, some quail egg dish, etc. The red tuna sashimi was literally a single slice per order.
