Restaurant X, Cornelius, NC
Restaurant X is actually in Davidson (not obvious, since one town virtually runs into the other) and is an excellent addition to the local scene. The owners are British/Irish and you find many homestyle meals from their home countries on the menu, as well as regional favorites such as Shrimp & Grits, pastas, seafood, and "square meals." The patrons are mostly, in fact, not college students, but local residents. It's a small restaurant, so a reservation is a good idea, but the space is charming and they have a fun little patio that they heat in the winter. After having eaten there several times (I moved to Davidson about nine months ago) I highly recommend Restaurant X. I have some food sensitivities and they're also helpful and friendly about making substitutions. The desserts are also great.
Brixx Pizza - Charlotte NC
I really like Brixx for a not-so-heavy, slightly healthier pizza. Though it pains me to nod towards the 'burbs, I have definitely noticed that the quality has been better at the Birkdale location than the Dilworth one.
Help! Dinner in Gastonia/Belmont, NC
I'm trying to find a nice-ish restaurant, "American" food, near Gastonia, NC. Near = 15 minute drive, 20 max. My family is going to take out an elderly aunt for her birthday and we're new to the area and don't know of any places. Searches haven't turned anything up. The elderly aunt will need food not far out of her comfort zone and she's not going to want to go into the city.
A good looking restaurant, something with tablecloths (or that at least suggests that style) would be great since it's a birthday dinner.
We prefer not to go to chains but will if that's the only choice!
Thanks!!
Ann.
PS. Birthday dinner is this coming Saturday.
Dinner in Charlotte: Not fine dining, not a dive, not a chain...
Good info! We moved to Charlotte six months ago and are busy exploring restaurants. We're north of town, so let me add two to the list from our area: Restaurant X in Davidson and Toast in Huntersville. Both restaurants fit the criteria from the original post in this thread.
Thanksgiving Dinner in Asheville/Hendersonville?
Hi, I asked this question recently and ended up making reservations at Grove Park Inn... just to let you know, the seatings there are selling out quickly!
Thanksgiving Inn/Lodge/B&B - VA/NC mountains?
Returning to thank you for the suggestions. We now have reservations at the Grove Park Inn. :)
Charlotte - Farmer's Markets!
Excellent, thank you! And now I know Alice Waters is coming to speak! Woohoo!
help me choose a Brunello!
Wow... did I come to the right place! Thank you everyone, so much.
Yes, I think a set of 4 glasses, a decanter, and 1-2 bottles is a great idea. I'll leave it to the birthday boy if he wants to share or keep it all to himself. I think I will check out a couple of wine shops, as well as probably the super-chain mentioned (are TW the initals, Frodnesor?)
Two questions: 1) shall I make this a theme gift and get him a subscription to a wine magazine as well (if so, which one?); 2) are the Schott Zwiesel glasses German made?
help me choose a Brunello!
My husband and I are beginning wine enthusiasts. After a trip to Italy a few years ago, he particularly regretted not buying Brunello di Montalcino to bring home. So, I want to get him a really lovely bottle for a birthday gift, along with some good quality wine glasses. (Hopefully I can get this combination for $200-250?)
I have no idea where to start... how about some suggestions for a wine and glasses. Descriptions are more than welcome!
Charlotte - Farmer's Markets!
We're new to town! Please list all markets that you like to love. Especially interested in any huge ones and/or ones that have a lot of local and/or organic foods.
Thanks!
Thanksgiving Inn/Lodge/B&B - VA/NC mountains?
Oh, Grove Park Inn is a great idea! Lodging is over budget, but I'll call and see if they allow dinner reservations for those staying elsewhere.
Silver Thatch looks good, too! Will call.
More suggestions are welcome!
Thanksgiving Inn/Lodge/B&B - VA/NC mountains?
Hi folks! My family (split between DC area and Charlotte) are talking about meeting somewhere in the Virginia or northern NC mountains or foothills for Thanksgiving.
I'd love your suggestions for places to stay that serve a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Even better if it is near a town with a few things to do for the non-outdoor family members.
Thanks in advance!
Gelato in Charlotte???
Another vote for Mia Gelato in Birkdale. I have to admit to being a gelato snob (b/c nothing seems to compare to gelato in Italy) but this place does a good job!
Uptown Charlotte Lunch
I'm new to town but when I explored last week, there was a line out the door of Price's Chicken Coop. That can't be a bad sign!
What are you buying at Carrboro or Durham Farmers' Market?
Hi LulusMom: The late frost got most of the early figs this year. The mid-summer ones are starting to ripen but that can also be dependent on rain... so that's why having them around is iffy right now.
Xios Greek Cuisine - Apex, NC
(Sorry for the fake out greek letters...) Just wanted to post that I've been to this restaurant three times and loved it each time. We have always ordered mezethes/small plates. I want it to stay in business, so try it! http://www.xioscafe.com

These are great suggestions and support what I had found out so far, with a few new areas to look at. Thanks so much & please keep the ideas coming!
Raleigh/Durham/CH Suggestions Needed for BDay Dinner
What kind of food do you love? That would help since it's *your* birthday. (Happy BD, btw!)
How about Acme? Provence is good but I prefer Vin Rouge on Ninth Street. Second Empire in Raleigh? I've wanted to try it but haven't. Fearrington is also amazing.
Rate Charlotte neighborhoods - for food options!
Hi all! My husband and I have lived in the Chapel Hill area for many years - and have loved the options the Triangle has to offer. We're relocating for work reasons to Charlotte and are considering our options where to live. Food is pretty high on the list!
We love local places, locally-grown food, as well as international spots. We will go to chains but try to avoid them when possible. We also love to garden and cook ourselves. We're moving from Carrboro and have loved being able to walk and bicycle, as well as hop in the car for a short drive, to some of the best local places. All that said, we tend to eat mostly in the cheap to moderate, price wise. Occasionally we go for the pricey meal for a special occasion.
If this was you and you were moving to Charlotte, what areas would you look closely at?
