Christmas dinner 2009 [A J Maxwell's Steakhouse]

I was recently in NYC for a long awaited trip with one my best friends. She had made reservations for 8:00 P.M. at A J Maxwell's. It was our last night in the City, so we were both looking forward to our dinner. Joining us, was a friend, also, our driver, back home.

It just happened to be Restaurant Week in the City and Maxwell's was participating. They initailly brought over to the table when we sat down, their "regular Menu". My friend had to ask for the "restaurant week " menu. Our waiter, Howard, was so not freindly, and acted as though we were "inconvieniencing" him by taking our order for our meal, refilling our water glasses. He even got clearly annoyed when our guest asked to change his dessert order. We ordered a cocktail before dinner, a Gin and Tonic, and a Captain and Diet, and the drinks were so "watered down", all you could taste was the mixer, and hardly any alcohol. Howard, never even bothered to ask us if we wanted wine with dinner,or another cocktail before dinner was served. The first course was a basic mixed green salad, but we all ordered the "restaurant week Entree " of sliced Filet of Beef.
There were 3 or 4 slices of filet, and about 3 potatoes on the plate. The portions were definately liliputian. Howard, our lousy waiter, never once came over to our table to see if we were enjoying our meal. Everyone, but him, brought things to our table.
We did finally see Howard, after we asked another waiter for our check.
Much to our surprise, the gratuity was already on the check! The gratuity was 20 % added to our taxed bill. Our watered down cocktails were $14.00 each.
Howard got awfully friendly when we paid the bill, and asked us "Where are you all off to now? I was so disgusted! I didn't acknowledge him, we all just got up and walked away.
I did tell the Manager that I was highly disappointed in the service, the food was mediocre, and the Howard, did not in any way deserve a 20 % gratuity.
She apologized, and I could tell that she was going to try and "appease " us in some way, but I politely told her that I would never return for a meal, and they should not participate in Restaurant Week. I feel like we were robbed!
