Uncle Julio's on Lemmon Ave. Absolutely the best for chips, salsa, queso and fajitas. Also, all of their versions of the Tex-Mex classics are great, especially the pork tamales.

For Tex Mex in Oak Lawn it has to be Uncle Julio's on Lemmon Ave at Douglas. The food and service are great, and they are good at accomodating groups.

I had the pastrami at Gio's and thought it was great. Moist and tender, not rubbery, and not too fatty.
Good Fish Taco in Plano
I had the grilled fish tacos at Uncle Julio's on the tollway at Keller Springs the other day and they were outstanding. Very fresh tasting with plenty of fish and an avocado cream sauce. Best I've had of any of the other fish tacos I've tried around town.
Good Pizza in S. Lewisville, Coppell, or N. Carrollton
Cavalli is mostly pizza, some salads ( I like the Irving Salad ) a few pasta items. Place your order at the counter and pay, then someone brings the food out. Very casual. The pizza here is true Neopolitan style pizza from a wood burning oven, and it is consistently excellent. Maurizio's is a sit down neighborhood Italian place with pizzas, pastas, salads, and mains. They also have a wood burning oven, and though it opened only a few weeks ago, I have had their pizza three times already. It is way above average. With some time using the oven and getting their process down, they may rival Cavalli at some point. Right now I would rate Cavalli higher on their pizza. The pizza at both places is worth seeking out and is some of the best I've had, especially in the Coppell/Lewisville/Carrolton area.

Cavalli is outstanding. Maurizio's at the corner of Sandy Lake and Denton Tap in Coppell is very good.also. You can't go wrong with either place if pizza is what you are after.
2 days in Houston, need recs
Will be in Houston on Monday and Tuesday of next week, staying right downtown. Need centrally located restaurant suggestions. Will be with a group that will include children, so nothing too fine dining. Need suggestions for breakfast lunch and dinner. Interested in knowing about iconic Houston must trys and unknown gems.
Dallas to Houston recs
Driving from Dallas to Houston on Sunday. Need recs for somewhere to stop and eat on the way. Mt. Zion BBQ is closed on Sunday, so that is out. Anyone know of any other gems along 45?
Austin must have meals?
Will be in Austin for three days next week, staying downtown. Want suggestions for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We will have our 5 year old son with us, so nothing too fine dining, just want to know what are the must have meals. My wife is pregnant, so no sushi, but we like everything else.
Sushi in Las Colinas/Irving area
Jinbeh on Las Colinas Blvd just south of OConnor next to the Omni Mandalay Hotel. Not trendy, no pretense here. Just fresh fish and reasonable prices. Service can be spotty, especially at lunchtime, but the sushi is fresh and well prepared.
DFW - Frog Legs
All Uncle Julio's locations serve mesquite grilled frog legs. They also have combinations plates that feature the frog legs paired with fajitas, or some of the other mesquite grilled items like shrimp or ribs.
Must have meals / foods in Pittsburgh?
Northeast of the city in an area called Plum. We will be doing some sightseeing and exploring downtown, but are also willing to detour for some great meals. Obviously if there are any interesting places near where we are staying, those suggestions would also be much appreciated. Anything that is good, local or regional, not a national chain, and unique or memorable. My inlaws have not lived in the area long, and are not foodies, so they might not be good resources for suggestions. Thanks to anyone who can help.

My inlaws recently moved to Pittsburgh, and we will be visiting from Texas over the holidays. I have never been to Pennsylvania. Obviously not looking for Mexican or barbeque. Will be with the whole gang for most meals, so not really interested in ultra fine dining, or sushi. Wanting recs for true Pittsburgh must have meals, food items, or local institution restaurants, but want to avoid the tourist traps. We will have four days so breakfast, lunch and dinner recs are all appreciated.

Las Vegas Recs needed
My wife and I are travelling to Las Vegas in early November, staying at Caesar's Palace for a Friday through Monday. We have not been to Vegas in a couple of years. On past visits we have been to Olives, Spago, Mesa Grill, Postrio, Trattoria Lupo, Eiffel Tower restaurant in Paris, Des Artistes in Paris, etc. Among the aforementioned, only our experiences at Postrio and Spago stand out as really great. I would like some recommendations for new places to try for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Price is no object, but I want the best food, not necessarily the most expensive. Having said all that, we would prefer to stay on the Strip, as we have lots of other activities planned. Thanks.
Dallas - Thin Crust Pizza
Cavalli on Beltline just south of 635 in Irving. Woodburning oven, awesome crust. I have been eating here since they opened, and now they are starting to get some press, so I know it won't be my little secret for long, and I'll have to deal with the crowds, but they are doing it right, and deserve all the success. I love this pizza!
Best Fajitas in Dallas?
Why would anyone laugh? Uncle Julio's fajitas are the best in town, hands down. The beef and chicken are equally good. Always tender and perfectly cooked, and not so marinated that the flavor of the meat can't come through like at other places. They use a very high quality of beef and chicken, and you can taste the difference. All of the accompaniments are top notch too; the guacamole, tortillas, fresh roasted salsa, etc.
Report on Dallas to San Antonio trip
Went to San Antonio over the Labor Day weekend. Asked for some recs for the drive down and the time in SA. Only got one reply and ended up at one of the restaurants suggested, Rosario's. A brief roundup:
Stopped at Schoepf's in Belton on the way down. It was rated as Top 50 in the state by Texas Monthly. Line out the door at 1:30 on Saturday afternoon. Then realized that the line is just created by the inefficient system they have for taking / filling the orders. Brisket dry, ribs dry, sausage run of the mill. Not one of those places where the sauce is optional. The sides: Potato salad, cole slaw, pinto beans, and "cheesy potatoes" were all very good, in fact, the highlight. Cornbread and jalapeno cornbread beyond dry. The staff all were either sitting down eating, or seemed completely disinterested.Tried to order a half chicken but the chickens "weren't ready yet". Then ten minutes later I saw one of the employees eating chicken for her lunch. There were slices of pie in plastic wrap near the register, but nobody knew what kind of pie it was ( and didn't seem to care to find out ). Ugh. I've consistently had better food and experiences at Rudy's.
Saturday night in SA we went to Chris Madrid's for a burger. I had heard about this place from TexasBurgerGuy and elsewhere. Great atmosphere, very good burger. Great fries. I don't think these are the best burgers in the state as some suggest, but they are definitely worth the trip. Also, the atmosphere is unique and interesting. I thought the burgers were about on par with Kinkaid's here in DFW.
Sunday morning we had an obligatory breakfast at Mi Tierra, and you know, it was actually pretty good. We went mainly because I hadn't been in 25 years, and I wasn't expecting much, but we kept it simple and it turned out allright. With eggs,barbacoa, refrieds, tortillas and pico de gallo and a cup of coffee its hard to miss, but they did it right. Picked up some apple empanadas they call "campechanas" on the way out, and they were killer!
Sunday night we had dinner at Rosario's, the one place that was recommended on this board. The food was better than average Tex Mex. The soup with the red chile broth, pozole, pork, and shredded cabbage was very good. The chicken mole enchilada was also very good. Rajas de poblano con crema was not enough rajas, mostly crema. Fajitas and Camarones mojo de ajo were both average. Salsa was freshly roasted and nice and smoky. Prickly pear frozen margaritas were very tasty. Server was pleasant but sloppy and not really on it. I liked this place though, and would recommend it.
oak brook area eats?
I love Uncle Julio's Hacienda on Butterfield Rd. for fajitas or carne asada and Tex-Mex; enchiladas, tamales, etc. The food is always very fresh and well prepared, and the chips and salsa they bring to your table when you sit down are amazing. The atmosphere is fun and the service is always good. This is one of our favorite places. Also, for a Chicago style hot dog and experience, you must go to Portillo's!
Dallas to San Antonio + Riverwalk
Going to San Antonio this weekend, staying on the Riverwalk. Looking for suggestions for places to eat on the way there and back. Which barbeque places are not too far off the route that we should not miss? Also in San Antonio, we are staying in a hotel on the Riverwalk. Are there any places that are musts ( Mexican or other ) either near the Riverwalk or near downtown? We will have our four year old son with us, so nothing too upscale, just looking for some great food. We will be there three days, so looking for breakfast, lunch and dinner recs. Thanks.
One dining opportunity near the Essex House.
Thanks for the recs. I ended up getting into the city in time to have lunch at South Gate in the hotel. Everything was great. The staff was very friendly and attentive, the restaurant is pretty, Kerry Heffernan was doing table visits and my three course lunch was spot on. Asparagus salad, Spiced cod, and a blood orange sorbet dessert that was spectacular. Unfortunately my visit for dinner at Nougatine was a disappointment. The hostesses did not seem to understand English. I sat at the bar, and the three bartenders were more interested in chatting with each other than serving any of the guests. It was a chore to make eye contact, and then once when I did, the BT said "Do you need something?". I could see this was going to be like pulling teeth, so I just went straight to the entree. The Red Snapper in Lemongrass broth was completely bland and a little overcooked. Oh well, one out of two ain't bad.
Hard Eight BBQ (coppell, tx)
When did Rudy's try in the Coppell area? I've lived here for six years and it certainly hasn't been during that time. We've eaten at the Rudy's in Waco and in Austin and it has been superior on every occasion to Hard Eight. Purists may reflexively deride Rudy's as a chain, but I've always had way above average, consistently good ribs, brisket and sausage there. I wish they would open one in Coppell. I've given Hard Eight at least half a dozen tries, and they never can seem to put it all together, very spotty. I wouldn't mind paying their prices if they could deliver a consistently good product.
One dining opportunity near the Essex House.
I will be attending a conference in the city at the end of the month, and will be in and out quickly. My one chance to squeeze in a dining experience will be to duck out of the cocktail reception on Wednesday night a little early and make a 9pm reservation somewhere near the Essex House. I will likely be solo.
I want a restaurant close that would be memorable and accomodating for a solo diner. I don't mind eating at the bar. It has been a long time since I have been to New York and I am completely out of touch with the restaurant scene.
I am sure there are many wonderful choices. Price is no object. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Good Eats around DFW/Grapevine Area
What is corporate food? I have always found the food at Uncle Julio's to be fresh and very flavorful. It does tend to get a little loud, but I think that is a result of their always being extremely crowded; possibly a sign that people like the food.

[Dallas] Mooyah Burgers & Fries
I am squarely in the "not that impressed" camp. Being my first time, I kept it simple and I had a cheeseburger "mooyah style" and I thought while all of the ingredients were fresh, the burger overall was just ok. American cheese as the only option? I didn't care for the secret sauce. It reminded me of a fresher version of a Jumbo Jack or some other fast food burger. The fries were good and crispy. Overall, it was fine, but I would not go out of my way for it. Better than Kincaid's? Fries, yes. Burger, no way.
Uncle Julios in Dallas/Mex/Tex-Mex Alternatives
I disagree with your comments about Uncle Julio's. I have always found the food and service to be excellent. It is very fresh, high quality and well prepared ( not greasy )tex-mex. I think it was a good reccomendation, even though it seems like Ianto2000 was looking for something a little different.
Hard Eight BBQ (coppell, tx)
I have been to Hard Eight three times since they opened, and I must say, much of the criticism here is deserved. But as a Coppell resident, I am still excited to have them in the area, and am holding out hope that they will make the necessary improvements. I agree that they are pricey, but I certainly do not agree with coppellite that we would be better off with a "Spring Creek or somesuch", as I will not even use the coupons they are constantly mailing out to eat there at a discount. At least with Hard Eight, there is a chance that they might just need some time to dial it in a bit. Here are my Hard Eight observations:
The brisket is definitely unlike any I have ever had before, and not in a good way. More like roast, but very dry.
Ribs have been hit or miss.
Chicken and sausage have been very good.
The little bacon wrapped turkey nuggets were a nice diversion, but not something you could make a meal out of.
For me the sides are the weakest link here. Potato salad is excessively mustardy, cole slaw very vinegary, and the free beans are flavorless.
I agree with coppellite, the banana pudding is very good!
Here's hoping the owners read this site and are open to constructive criticism.
Need Recomendations near Grapevine (Dallas)
Uncle Julio's recently opened in Grapevine at 114 and William D. Tate. This is now our "go-to" restaurant in the area. We have eaten here about once a week since they opened a few months ago and we have always had awesome food. It is upper-end TexMex, so they have the whole taco/tamale/enchilada thing covered, but we love the mesquite grilled fajitas, carne asada or shrimp brochette. The restaurant is beautiful and the service is also very good. The chips and salsa and guacamole are the best we have ever had. They do not take reservations, but you can call and put your name down if they have a waiting list.
