There is a Dreamland in Birmingham as well, although I've heard its not as good as the Tuscaloosa one:

I believe the 5 pts Jim n Nicks should be the closer one.
Another alternative is to check out a random bbq joint in nearby Leeds or somewhere else directly nearby. I don't think many of us venture that way so it'd be new to us.

Brewpubs are pretty much illegal in Alabama, with few exceptions. Dreamland has beer, for sure.

I second Gordos, or the taco truck in Homewood.

I don't know what others say (I'm kind of lazy and just go to the local bbq joints), but I like Dreamland as well. Not for the meat itself, but for the sauce.
My friend like's Saw's a lot. I think its not bad.

The Jim N Nick's in 5 points is:

Food truck near UAB/downtown

There's a burgery-salad food truck that parks alternately on University or downtown. It wasn't bad, and its the perfect time of year to eat outside.
Now if we can only get a little bit of variety. If we could get the Valley taco truck to come this away, I'd be even happier.

For those interested in Vietnamese food...

I just think the general quality is not as good. They seem to have started making the stuff sweeter and some of the veggies don't seem quite as fresh. The chili sauce used to be good, and now sucks. They seem to be transitioning to a typical American-Chinese place to me. I don't bother anymore and just stick to Red Pearl. I think the only Hoover place I go to now is Asian Cuisine.
I went back to Asian Cuisine, and I'll say the cold vermicelli with grilled pork and eggrolls is much better at Saigon Noodle on 280. The pad thai isn't amazing, but better than just about every Thai place in the area (which isn't saying much). They actually put tamarind in it.

Chen's is a different type of food, so there's plenty of room in my restaurant list for it. However, I stopped going since IMO it seems to have gone downhill some (I think they sent the previous chef to open a place in Jackson, MS). It pisses me off when restaurants (Chen's, Silver Coin, etc.) get a strong following, then go lax on the quality to make more money.

Great meal at Bettola last night

I think Bettola is probably the only place in the Birmingham area I would actually miss if I moved elsewhere. Its just awesome.

For those interested in Vietnamese food...

The place next to the Publix on 150 has reopened. It's now called "Asian Cuisine", but has most of the same good Vietnamese stuff it had before and the same family is working there, cooking the food, etc... This is my favorite Vietnamese place in the area, and I despite that I don't make it out to Hoover often, when I do this is a destination. The Bun Bo Hue is always great. There was also a catfish tamarind soup that wasn't bad.
They also now have some "Chinese" food, but I didn't try any of it.
The place on 280 (Saigon noodle house) isn't bad, but I'm not a huge fan and I don't really like the place of green springs (Pho something-or-other)
