Horrible Experience at Austin Java

I agree Java is best for breakfast. Lunch is always packed and there is no parking. Also cakes look great but have no flavor. It's a funky place but go at the right times.

Sweet corn tamales?

We just got back from a trip through Arizona and Colorado and had fabulous sweet corn tamales with green chile. Does anyone know of a place in Austin (or surround areas) that serves these? The kicker, too, is that we want no lard in the tamales--we're vegetarian. Thanks, chowhounds!

Hungarian in Pflugerville

It's been quite some time since anyone has mentioned The European Bistro. Last night my husband and I ate there with friends. It is fabulous. We are vegetarian so I had the veggie goulash. My husband eats fish and had the special. Our friends both had the meat goulash. The service is great and the desserts are made on site and are to die for. The website is http://www.european-bistro.com/. It's a little pricy but very elegant and they take reservations and its a great place for special ocassions. Downtown Pflugerville.

Ethiopian in Austin (really Pflugerville)

I've only had Ethiopian in DC and it was awhile ago so my memory is fading. This was authentic and the owner and I talked about other places my husband and I had eaten. The bread was chewy (almost spongy) and plentiful. The food was spicy and not so spicy. Very tasty. Because they just opened there weren't many people but the others in there were Ethiopian.

New to North Austin

New place for Ethiopian food just opened on Grand Avenue Parkway east of I-35 in Pflugerville. Addis Ethiopian Cafe. We tried it for lunch today and it was great.

Ethiopian in Austin (really Pflugerville)

A new Ethiopian cafe opened in Pflugerville this week and we tried it for lunch today. It's Addis Ethiopian cafe and it is on Grand Avenue Parkway just east of I-35 (strip center on the north side of Grand Ave. Parkway). Lots of meat and vegetarian choices. We had the veggie combo that was enough for 2-3 people to share and allowed us to sample 5-6 veggie offerings. The owner was very attentive to our needs. Not open on Wednesdays.

Wild Wood Art Cafe & Bakery

Thanks. After I asked, I received a notice that the Vegetarian Society is eating there next month. I may try to go but it doesn't sound like it's worth going out of the way for. I too miss Mothers and hope they get back up soon.

Wild Wood Art Cafe & Bakery

Has anyone eaten at this restaurant? The website only shows their bakery products. Insite Austin has them listed in the vegetarian section, although the note indicates they also serve meat dishes. I'll probably try it (I'm vegetarian) but wondered if anyone has already been there. It's on Bee Cave Rd. near Westbank.

[AUS] Curry In A Hurry report

Just tried Bombay Express. It was fabulous. Very casual...plastic and styrofoam but the food was excellent. Loved the sambar. The masala dosa was a bit spicy for my husband's taste but perfect for mine. They also offer a dinner plate that is $5.94. We'll try that the next time.

Options for a tasty lunch in the 51st/Manor/Springfield area

Nope, never had the margaritas. I agree that the menu is a bit limited but I found the puffy tacos to be very good. Actually, the salsa is a bit spicy. I find most of the food to be more "healthy" Tex-Mex but I only eat the vegetarian entrees so can't comment on anything except the puffy tacos and the enchiladas. Different strokes....

Hot Dogs

I agree that the buns are nothing special. I'd go further and say they are pretty bad. More like Wonder Bread than a bun. If they would go with a better bun, I'd eat there a lot! As it is, I rarely go there because the buns are so yucky.

Is gourmet L.A. out to get vegetarians? (long)

I have never understood LA's reputation as veg-friendly. Lived there, visit there annually and I have always had to really seek out veggie options. Even places that SAY they can do vegetarian often have very pedestrian options.

Cake

Don't bother with Austin Java. The cakes look good but are tasteless. I've always liked the desserts at Hyde Park Bar and Grill. Also you might try Mr. Natural. They do organic and vegetarian baking. I like their Forest Cake.

Options for a tasty lunch in the 51st/Manor/Springfield area

Not quite at 51 but on Manor there is Eastside Cafe. They take reservations so you can get in and out quickly. There is also Vivo, which can get crowded unless you go early. Both are casual but very nice.

Vegetarian in Santa Fe/Thanksgiving

Thanks! I had seen some info on this restaurant and want to try it. Didn't know they did Thanksgiving. I'll make a reservation.

Vegetarian in Santa Fe/Thanksgiving

We plan to be in Santa Fe over Thanksgiving. Any suggestions for a restaurant that might be open on Thanksgiving and have vegetarian options? Even a great buffet that has lots of veggies and salads would be great.

Visiting Scottsdale in September.

Very....very casual but try The Fry Bread House. It looks very tacky but it is Native American food (cuisine is too fancy for this place). But trust me...Frommer's loves it and you won't get a Navajo taco back east.

Veggie Burgers north of town

Thanks. I forgot about Red Robin but their veggie burgers are rather mushy. I've also found their service to be a bit poor and I agree the prices are high for what you get.

I read elsewhere that Houston's is not totally vegetarian with the items they show as veggie and yes, if I go down that far I'd probably just go to Hyde Park. But I appreciate the thoughts.

Looking for best milkshake in Austin

Hut's?

Veggie Burgers north of town

We recently moved north of Austin and would love to find a good veggie burger. We love Hut's but it's too far. Fuddruckers is okay but not great. Any ideas for Pflugerville, Round Rock, or Georgetown veggie burgers?
