NOLA Locals: A frequent visitor looking for some itinerary feedback for an upcoming visit, sans family/work.

Dining in R'evolution's bar is a totally differnt experience than the dining room. I'd skip the bar, Buffa's and Sobu.

August is Besh's best, followed by the more casual Domenica. Can't go wrong with either.

Recommendations for brunch/lunch/dinner places (researched!!)

Take the Canal St. streetcar to pick up your crawfish from K-Jean's. They are a couple doors down from Brocato on the same side of Carrollton Ave. No dine in, but you can walk a few more blocks down to City Park and have a picnic. It is definitely worth paying a bit extra for "select" ( larger) crawfish. Don't forget to bring your libations and some wet wipes.

Do not miss lunch ( much preferred over dinner) at Commander's (m-f) in the garden room. Theirs Is some of the best gumbo in town but often bypassed for the renowned turtle soup. Prix fixe specials plus 25 cent martinis.

Consider an all appetizer meal at Brigtsen's rather than Dante's.

August offers a vegetarian tasting menu.

Saturday late lunch in May .... your recs?

August is not open for lunch on Saturday.

Make a late brunch reservation for Commander's garden room. A fun, boisterous time will be had by all. Make the rsv asap.

Second choice: Galatoire's.

New Orleans in July

I always thought of winter as our rainy season. July is usually hot and humid with more passing showers rather than all day rain, no?

Herbsaint or GW Fin?

It's served with tomato and lobster risotto, sugar snap peas and lobster butter. Unfortunately, it is not always on the menu.

Herbsaint or GW Fin?

Toss a coin. We usually make 2 rsv. when planning to dine at Fins, both at the same time. I call Fins after noon on the day of the rsv. to inquire about the menu since lit changes daily. Should the Scalibut not be available, I cancel and keep the other rsv. Depending upon the app selection, we make a tasting of 5or so and split the Scalibut. Less enticing apps, we order a couple plus 2 Scalibut. The Scalibut with lobster risotto is outstanding as are the cold smoked sizzling oysters. These are the " gold standard" for chargrilled . They arrive plump and juicy with a lovely smoke flavor, unlike the chargrilled elsewhere, that are grilled to death and dry. You are ordering these mostly to sop up the garlic butter sauce. The oysters are inconsequential. FWIW,. I always request a streetside window table. No difficulty with conversation due to noise.

No Scalibut, keep the Herbsaint rsv. Most anything you order will satisfy. Enjoy!

Restaurant R'evolution--eating at the bar?

Tourism has significantly lowered the dress standard in fine dining restaurants. I have dined at R'evolution numerous times and seen all manner of attire. Most men were not wearing jackets.

While prices are the same whether you dine in the bar or restaurant, the experience definitely not. Do yourself a favor and make reservations for the dining room. You can make a tasting menu from several appetizers or split entrees. They will serve it in courses.

New Orleans for our 20th Wedding Anniversary

Parkway for a shrimp poboy. IMO the rb is a flavorless, wet mess.

Dick & Jenny's vs. Jacques-Imo's

Contrary to "Uptown", I find Dantes disappointingly overrated. By far the best menu selection is the "chicken under a brick". It is infused with a lovely maple flavor. Unfortunately, the skin is mushy. An all appetizer meal at Brigtsen's would be far superior. Just my 2 cents.

King Cake

Try a slice of Domenica's for dessert before ordering a whole cake for $35. I found the description reads better than it tastes. It is cut in half horizontally with the fillings sandwiched between. This leaves the bottom half too thick and doughy, absorbing the salted caramel thereby resulting in little caramel flavor. The mascarpone slid to the opposite edge. It was difficult getting a piece with a taste of banana, caramel and cream. In addition, the top of the brioche was unpleasantly hard.

I tried La Dolce Nola's nutella last year. It left me wondering "where's the nutella?" Perhaps I just got a bad one.

My favorites are Cake Cafe's apple goat cheese and La Boulangerie's French. IMO, Manny Randazzo makes the best traditional.

Has anyone tried Maurice's Banana Foster?

Thoughts on Cafe Adelaide Christmas Menu

The menu reads well. I have limited experience with the food. I have dined there a couple times and was not impressed enough to return.

Quail, Turtle, and Quaility Rib Roast

USDA prime beef :
Robert Fresh Market on Robert E. Lee is my preference followed by:
Dorignac's
Langenstein's

Prime is also available :
Rouses the least expensive but generally not worth the savings. Flavor can be hit or miss

Rare Cuts The priciest but not necessarily the best This includes the dry aged

All the above plus WF should have quail.
Turtle is usually frozen and available at Rouses, Langenstein's, and probably Dorignac's.

The best po boys are fried seafood and rb. All should be eaten hot. Cold poboys can not be compared to a sub. No oil/vineagar, Italian seasoning. Dressed only with iceberg, tomato, pickles mayo on French.

Reveillon Suggestions

Galatoire's only takes reservations for upstairs. Downstairs dining room is first come, first served so you'll be on an even keel with everyone else. Downstairs is the preferred dining room anyway. No way of telling how busy they will be on any given night. As for Upperline, no big deal. The menu reads beeter than the food delivers. Brigtsen's is better than Martinique. IMO, their appetizers is,where they shine. Make a,tasting meal of,them. Most, entrees are servedmwith themsame onld veggies and mashed potatoes.

Reveillon Suggestions

You will be doing yourself a didervice by dining in the bar at R'evolution. (won't do that again). Three Muses in Marigny is a good for small plates plus live music. I had been looking forward to trying Maurepas until my son went and said "the food basically sucks". lol. Perhaps The Delachaise on St. Charles. Get off the streetcar at Louisiana. It will be just across the neutral ground. The Columns Hotel is about 1 block uptown on the opposite side of the avenue. It is a lovely spot for sitting on the porch with a cocktail. Antoine's streetside Hermes bar for cocktails and bites. They have a bar menu with a sampler plate. you can also order off the restaurant menu

Reveillon Suggestions

Yes. However after revisiting the Revillion menu, it seems one can select the same number courses for about the same price. FWIW, they are quite accomodating and will split entrees to serve as appetizer (tasting ) portions . The crab beignets are wonderful. I think my husband is addicted.

You enjoy the show for what it is, entertainment. Many locals object to the inaccuracies. It is afterall, fiction that loosely chronicles post Katrina nola. Sometimes we lose sight of that.

HBO's Treme 11-19 Episode, Chowhound Plot Twist

I am local, lived through Katrina and the rebuild and agree with Rene ( fwiw, Rene is male).

One of the positvie things to come about due to Katrina was that the restaurants gained a new appreciation for the locals. We not only kept their doors open, we kept them busy.

Prior to Katrina, Besh, Link, Tommy Citanovich (Drago's), Spicer and Boswell each had one restaurant. Post K, Besh 9, Link 5, Spicer 2, Citanovich 2, Boswell 2. In addition, the restaurant scene (not including chains) had been less than 1,000. It now stands at 1313.

With what do you disagree?
