Where could I buy some authentic dashi without going to Japantown?

I was thinking of the HIME brand dried soups stock called Dashi no Moto. this is good for clear soup. doesn't have soy sauce in it. But has MSG.
The liquid ones like Kikkoman Memmi are for udon. Has more of a soy sauce taste to it.

Where are you? Try Tokyo fish market on San Pablo in Berkeley just North of Gilman. Ranch 99 in El Cerrito - mostly Chinese food but should have it. the kind that looks like large tea bag is better than the stuff you dump directly in the water. I use HIME brand. Most of the dashi has MSG.

preperformance dinner Palo alto

Your best lentil soup recipe?

from Williams-Sonoma Soup for Supper:; indian red lentil soup

1 1/2 c red lentils, wash/drain/sort/saute with 1 large chopped onion in butter<-season with gr coriander/cumin, 2 tsp fresh grated ginger (don't skip this) 1/2 tsp gr turmeric - you can skip this if you hate turmeric, pinch cayenne. 6 c water/chicken or vegetbale broth. bring to boil/simmer until lentis are soft 30-40 minutes. Puree, stir in 1 1/2 c diced tomatoes -reheat, salt/pepper/fresh cilantro. voila .

preperformance dinner Palo alto

Hi - going to see Merce Cunningham Nov 1 at Stanford LIvely Arts. would like to get to PA early and beat the traffic which would entail eating in Palo Alto that night. Any suggestions for dinner: Asian/fusion/California - anything but pizza or burgers Thank you.

East Bay Regional Mexican?

Talavera is tiny place Solano and Peralta in Berkeley. a cut above the usual, fish tacos particularly good. Service is a little slow because they cook your food when you order it.
