Large group dinner in Mobile

It depends on what you are looking for. Do you want southern cooking? Casual, upscale? There are the stand by's Winchells and Felix's. If you are looking for something more upscale, True Midtown, Kitchen on George, or The Bull. $$$?

This is the Minneapolis - St Paul board. Sorry if you aren't asking for St Paul picks because ipho is mine also. Good pho and great banh mi.

Xmas = Tamale Time. Picks?

Sorry to hear that...not my recent experience. Still better and cheaper than La Loma IMHO.

Xmas = Tamale Time. Picks?

Oh late to the party, but have to totally recommend the green chicken tamales at Cinco de Mayo Grocer. They also have a red pork and some kind of sweet hideous thing I tried and tossed. I am in love with the green chicken and at $1.50 they are HUGE and a STEAL. Make Lomas look like the total rip-off they are...

Midtown Global Market....Great..but could be Amazing.

Cocktails. Beer and wine. A drink! Hugely missing component. Now, with the Rabbit Hole, that is a different story.

Umami on sale this weekend - all you can eat dim sum for $30

BTW it was great. Enjoyed thoroughly. Sale is over, but they are on their way out...so go while you can.

No fried chicken but the RAMEN was so very good, as well as the congee with cauliflower. Fun too.

skin-on pork belly?

FYI: Ha Tien on University Avenue also has it. Wonderful store, newly rehab'd lovely bbq and deli and GREAT prices.

plus it doesn't smell (why does Sun Foods smell bad, anyways?)

No worries. This thread is over two years old. I don't think they care anymore.

JERABEKS CLOSED!

I have been missing them since the original closed. It was a fantastic neighborhood bakery with none of the hipster or bohemian vibe. And cheap. Loved it. Won't miss this version.

7th Street Social?

I was especially looking forward to this opening. And in equal parts, disappointed. Sat at the bar. Only patrons there. Service was lackluster. Even as it got busier and they added a second bartender. Service remained poor. We ordered the salmon and mushrooms. They were both good. What really bothered me were our drinks. They were nothing special at all and VERY expensive. Three drinks and two HH apps for over $50? And indifferent service? Nope.
And I was also surprised about the space. Everything I read made it sound so much better than it was. No intimacy, really off-putting exterior and nothing special.

Blood Orange Juice

Thanks for the replies...I had the cocktail this summer.
Luckily, I did stumble upon blood orange juice at the Lunds on 50th and France.

Had a fabu Stoli, blood orange juice, and prosecco cocktail at BLG and would love to make it at home. I haven't see Blood Orange juice anywhere for sometime. Anyone know where I can get some?

Char Siu

Better late than never...Ha Tien on University Avenue west of Marion Street has a wonderful deli and excellent well priced Char Siu, as well as duck and roast pork. Bonus points it also has a large selection of other asian dishes. All good and cheap.

It is in back of a grocery store with a large selection of asian food, fresh veg, meat and seafood. It has also been recently remodeled and is quite nice.

Cinco de Mayo Grocer Tamales

I apologize for forgetting the address. You are correct, it is difficult to see from the intersection of 38th and Nicollet. There is a parking lot on the south side of the building - but it may be inaccessible due to construction. There is parking behind the building on the corner - next door - use the alley east of the intersection.

Cinco de Mayo Grocer Tamales

I have a serious crush on the green chicken tamales that Cinco de Mayo sells. Finally checked it out - having to navigate god-awful construction and road closure - and I will be back. I tried the fresh tortillas - good. The beans- same. Same, same for the chicken verde, but the tamales. OHMYGOD. And they are...$2.00. And huge. And the red pork ones are very good also. Did I say $2? I almost feel guilty.
Try them. Go down the alley and park next door - they are hurting for business with construction. You will NOT be disappointed.
38th and Nicollet. They also have a good bakery -the churros were excellent and an interesting meat market.

Wonderful French bread loaves at 7 am......

Epi - exactly. Thanks. I love the way it looks, but prefer a baguette for eating...less crust. A personal preference. I will say, though, if you are doing a dinner party and plunk your bread in the middle of the table, this is a great centerpiece.

Wonderful French bread loaves at 7 am......

They indeed are surviving and have a wonderful assortment of fresh breads, including baguettes. I especially love the leave looking one, that is individual sized rolls baked together and has some great French name I don't remember.
I also love their pastries. GO! Support this store! It beats the crap out of Wuollets across the street.

Friday Lunch

Looking to have a really good cocktail and lunch. Most of the places that come to mind, are dinner only. Thinking downtown, loop, SE...probably not NE, but I could be convinced. I don't think we want to go much further west. Heading to Hudson after...

Much thanks.

Ha Tien banh mi

They were out of sticky rice - the sausage version (had three other varieties though) Tried the BBQ pork bnh mi today and, while it pains me to say it, I thought it was just plain weird. As in inedible weird. It had way too much butter/like spread, for once I felt the bbq was too fatty and the flavor just seemed off and while I love the amount of veggie on it, whatever that sauce they spoon on it was, it ruined it for me. Sigh. Sorry.
Back to ipho.
