Blue on Staten Island

So, Blue, the new place from the owners of Beso and Bayou, just opened in the former R.H. Tugs space by Snug Harbor. Anybody been yet? Any suggestions for what to order?

Fresh-filled cannoli on Staten Island?

I love this place. It's a great spot to hang out with a cannoli and an espresso.

Polish Place in Tompkinsville, SI

Glad you enjoyed it. We love the Polish Place, and often stop by for lunch. The attached deli has lots of cool Polish goods, so we often stock up on spicy mustard, a dozen pierogies and links of hunter-style kielbasa to keep in our freezer for when the mood takes us.

Best takeout pizza on Staten Island?

I'm more of a North Shore girl myself, so it's hard for me to say what's good that's also close to the Hilton. That said, you might try Cafe Metro's grandma pie, which is a crispy Sicilian with a much thinner crust than usual, with fresh tasting sauce, a very thin layer of fresh mozz, and basil. That travels better than most SI-style thin crust pizzas. Then it's just a straight shot up Forest Avenue to South Avenue.

Rockaway Beach eats

So we tried the fish taco place this past Saturday, on the excellent advice of the two previous posters. The fish tacos were fresh, the shredded cabbage, radishes and sauce playing nicely against the charred corn taste of the tortilla. The fish was hot and tasty in its battered coating. We did, however, feel a trifle sheepish standing in line with all the 20-something hipsters...I felt like I should have dressed up a bit more, or lost 30 pounds, or something...but perhaps that's a personal issue.

We then walked up to the boardwalk and checked out Caracas on 106th. WOW, this was great, and had us planning our next visit.I tried the arepa de pernil, with tender shredded pork accented by a spicy mango salsa. The arepa's exterior was mottled with crispy charred brown spots, while the inside was a bit fluffy, serving to sop up the delicious juices. Hubby had the arepa de pabellon (sp?) which was shredded braised beef and black beans, with the same yummy salsa. He had a $4.50(!) Modelo, while I washed it all down with an Arnold Palmer, their style. That was half hibiscus iced tea and half lemonade made with sugar cane. Later, we waddled over to Connolly's for a few beers.

Terrific stuff...we want to come back and work our way through Caracas' menu!

Rocco's Dinner Party

In fact, I have eaten at King's restaurant Kuma Inn many times b/c his food his fantastic. This is the second time I've seen him on FN--he lost Chopped in the 2nd round, too. Poor King. Maybe he should just stick to turning out awesome food rather than being on TV.

Enoteca Maria ~ SI

This is maybe my favorite restaurant in my home boro, which is full of great Italian joints. Saturday nights get loud, especially when owner Joe cranks up the Led Zep or old Rod Stewart songs. I always trust his wine recommendations...he always has something interesting to try. Sunday nights are my favorite night to go now, b/c the vibe is a bit more mellow...and there's often a Sunday "gravy" simmering away back in the kitchen. Always, always check the website the day that you go, to see which Nonna is cooking. Joe can probably tell you who is cooking in advance if you call him for a reservation (which you should definitely do...this tiny place fills up).

If it's the nonna from Sicily, my vote is for her caponata, lasagna, manicotti, and polpettone.
