Question about pork
Thanks for the replies. I saw the spareribs in the store today and they certainly did have a lot of fat! I opted not to buy them, even though they were just 1.79 a pound. It's kind of a turn-off when places advertise this way, with cryptic "benefits".
Question about pork
In my Valli Produce flyer they advertised pork spareribs as being "from light butcher hogs". Anybody know what this means? Is this type of pork supposed to be better quality? Thanks.
Decreasing size of packaging for store bought ice cream.
I had the same experience just this week with the b1g1 offer for Breyers. I didn't even realize the sizes were different until I put the two containers next to each other- one was 1.75, one 1.5. Does anybody actually pay the full $6? I hope not. I was disappointed that I had to put my cherry vanilla back to find something that came in the larger size-- opted for dulce de leche. Meh. And I've noticed the air content lately as well! I have not been enjoying the new, frothy Breyers ice cream, and that used to be my favorite brand! Does anybody know if you can get Turkey Hill in the Chicago area? Does it have as much air as Breyers? I'll have to try the Dreamery next time.
What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?
And don't forget the Cool Whip!!! Or Cool Whip Lite if you're dieting! For really special occasions, mix them together until you get a frothy, quivering pile of artificial ingredients!
What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?
Remind me what's heavenly hash...I only have a vague memory of a rolling stomach when I hear that name!
What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?
My mom was generally an awesome cook, even though she sometimes made (and still makes) questionable substitutions in recipes... (deli ham for prosciutto, anyone?)
However, when times were a bit lean I think she made Spanish rice every few nights. White rice, can of tomatoes, onion, *maybe* some chili powder. Gag. But like others on this board, I was required to taste everything. I do the same with my kids, no sandwich option. My mom always talks about things she had to eat as a kid and gagged upon--canned stewed tomatoes with sugar and saltines, room temperature. Why were sweet things so very popular mid-century? I love looking at old cookbooks (a la Lileks) and talking with mom about the horrible food that was inflicted upon her generation.
"Cheftography" on Food Network: Rachael Ray
Can you imagine a world where Julia was on Food Network?!? What would they turn her into? I'm guessing it would have been similar to the SNL spoofs of her and she'd be dropping chickens all over the place. Makes me think a little bit differently about my favorite and least favorite FN personalities...
Fieri pushing TGI Fridays
Didn't mean to sound so negative- perhaps selling out was too strong a term. I still love his show. But I do worry he's spreading himself thin. Because I like him, I don't want him to go the way of Emeril- I'm not sure, but did his branding start with selling some spices? Anyway, to stay on topic Guy Fieri started out as a brand, so I am not surprised at all to hear of his partnering with Fridays. Seems a perfect match...
Fieri pushing TGI Fridays
Punkin, thanks so much for assuring me I'm not the only one who is freaked out by Rick Bayless' facial hair!! Don't know why it bothers me so much, but I don't like it. He was actually one of my favorite celebrity chefs- he shows so much passion on One Plate...I just wish he hadn't sold out- first with the Frontera bottled sauces and then with BK. So sad.
Sandwiches...
Depends on the filling, i.e. PBJs get cut in half. But for me it also depends on the knife- if I only used a butter knife to make the sandwich, I'll cut it in half so the dull knife won't get caught on the corners. If I sliced anything with the chef's knife, I'll use it to go for the fancy diagonal cut. Crusts on, always. My son doesn't always eat them, but I find if I can get him to linger at the table a while he'll eventually break down and just eat it. He just thinks he doesn't like them!

Scene stealers: Preferring the condiment to the main ingredient?
So glad someone mentioned hot dogs! While I could definitely go for a bun full of sauerkraut and mustard, my condiment choices are Chicago style: onions, relish, mustard, tomatoes, sport peppers, maybe a little celery salt and a pickle... (never ketchup)
The snap of a good hot dog is good, but IMHO the dog itself is not entirely necessary!
As A Chowhound, What Did You Get For Christmas?
Santa got everything I asked for and a few I didn't (but they're still good!):
6-qt Chantal enameled cast iron stew pot (red)-- seems like this was the go-to gift for others this year- count how many Le Creusets you see on this thread!
A new paella pan (I must admit I had been making paella in an old non-stick wok until my husband finally threw it out. It was not ideal for paella anyway.)
New silicone rubber scrapers
Probe thermometer
Tiny strainer
Turkey baster- not that I baste my turkeys, but they're so darn useful!
Can opener
veggie brush
(you can tell lots of my kitchen stuff has worn out recently!)
Santa is at the store now returning a 12-inch everyday pan that we just don't need.
Pepper grinder- husband also threw out old one and I've been living off of pepper cracked in a ziploc bag using a meat hammer! My son loves doing this job...
Speaking of the son (almost 5) Grandma got him a Ratatouille chef's hat and apron. He was quite a sight wearing it over his spiderman jammies all day on Christmas! (I'm getting him an easy-bake oven for his birthday, along with one of those cookbooks with real recipes for the oven. Can't wait.)
What I didn't get that surprised me was a Microplane grater. Husband was asking me about them and I practically gave him a map to the stores that carry them. I think I'll just buy it myself. Can't wait any longer for one!
Oh, and my mom got me a cool clay pot for baking bread. This should be interesting.
What Are Your Favorite Grocery Store Items?
I love those artichokes!!! All the other marinated ones out there are just gross. But these are the best.
What Are Your Favorite Grocery Store Items?
Stonyfield Farm lowfat vanilla yogurt
tj's natural peanut butter (creamy, salted)
DeCecco pasta
Grape Nuts (mix with the yogurt!)
Add me to the Bonne Maman list
Brownberry 100% whole wheat bread
Hellman's mayo
any generic plastic wrap, but never Reynold's- it never sticks!
Rather shocking restaurant safety PSA from Canada
Horrifying. This is why I don't let my son (4) turn on the tv by himself. Is Canada having a big problem with kitchen accidents or something?
The odd cravings and dislikes of a pregnant woman [Moved from General Topics board]
Not really in sickness, but I did think it was a girl after craving so many sweets. And I was an emotional wreck, unlike my pregnancy with my son. I kept saying (through tears) "This had better be one girly-girl!" And 7 months later along came Olivia!

Congrats to all the preggos! I found this board when I was in my first trimester sitting on the couch all day, feeling sorry for myself. By the second trimester I couldn't read it anymore because just the memory of it made me feel nauseous. Anyway, my little daughter (now almost 3 mo.) made me want brownies/cookies/baked goods of any sort. Never was a craver of sweets before! I had hoped it would go away by now, but it hasn't yet! Didn't crave anything specific with my son, just everything I saw on T.V. When the Everybody Loves Raymond family had corn dogs I HAD TO HAVE A CORNDOG, NOW!!!
And forget anything from the refrigerator- yuk. I also felt I had to tell a grocery store employee that there was an orange rotting somewhere in the store, and he'd better fix it before everybody leaves. Not that anybody else in the store could smell it!
Is there anything you just can't make, no matter how hard you try? [Moved from General Topics board]
Pie crust for me too. And risotto- GRRRR, risotto...I know it's supposed to be al dente, but mine always sticks in my teeth. That just can't be right.

Silly question--has your family ever eaten other people's meatloaf?? Maybe it's all meatloaves, not just yours!
