Best Happy Hour in Santa Monica
This is Chowhound. Imo, discussions about great food/cuisine are paramount. For HH's with cheap drinks, Y3lp is more appropriate.
Best Happy Hour in Santa Monica
Easy. FIG.
FIG at 5. 5-6pm only. Tue-Sat. 50% off their entire menu, drinks and all, sans the Cote de boeuf for two.
My favorite HH spot in the area.
Dungeness season is on! Has anyone found great deals in LA markets?
I've been looking for dungeness in local markets the past couple days. Anyone run into good prices per pound?
Best Takeout Near Lincoln & Venice--ASAP!!!
Solid=consistent. And Baby Blues BBQ—while good when they're at their best—are terribly inconsistent with their baby backs. I've had very porky, flavorful ribs there to the "what-the-f*ck-is-this!?!" variety...and everything in between.
Each time I eat there or have it delivered, I take a moment before my first bite and pray for palatability.
Laid Back Spot in Venice/ Santa Monica for Biz Meeting
Rustic Canyon reasonably quiet? Hell no. Great food though.
L.A. 'Hound ISO recs: Vancouver/Seafood/Lunch/Near Downtown today
I'm jumping on a bus back to Vancouver in an hour, and I'll be in town for a bit before I fly back to LAX.
Can anyone suggest a great spot in Vancouver which satisfies the following:
- Open for lunch today (or weekdays)
- Serves the best indigenous seafood which you know of
- Is situated in downtown or within bus/skytrain/walking distance
Thanks in advance!
(In unrelated news, Vancouver and Whistler was awesome. Go Canada!)
Best Brewpubs / Microbreweries?
Been to Hollingshead's...and have heard that Stuffed Sandwich is for the hardcore. Give these a shot.

Let's Be Frank on Abbot Kinney?
Green Truck does have scheduled stops. Schedule is on their site:

Let's Be Frank on Abbot Kinney?
Just passed a Let's Be Frank truck on my way home a few minutes ago (parked in front of The Otheroom).
Any intelligence on this? Are they doing scheduled stops around town now (similar to the Green Truck)?

Susie Cakes Now in Costa Mesa / Newport !
I really enjoy their cinnamon roll, which the Brentwood location sadly bakes on a sporadic schedule ("on some Saturdays"). Try it and let me know what you think. Their whoopie pies are damn good, too.
burritos like the mission in SF?
I feel the same way. I'm convinced it doesn't exist. I've been craving one for quite a while now.
It's a bummer that San Diego to the south and SF to the north have the goods, yet here in LA we have $6 burritos with very little meat and tons of rice and beans for filler.
What a shame. You find one, lemme know. I'll make a beeline for it.
Kyochon - Korean fried chicken
I've only eaten there once and I also noticed that some wings were small, while others were much larger. What's up with that?
Is it normal for them to serve their wings in various sizes?
Please help me love the westside!
What's all this commotion about the westside being so grand? Breathing good air is negated by ingesting mediocre food!
In terms of chow, the westside's culinary landscape has many choices yet very few, consistent stand-outs...especially affordable, divey, ethnic spots which you're interested in.
Solid Thai restaurants don't exist here. When I have a craving, I consider Thai Nakorn in OC before I subject myself to any spot here. Although, I would suggest Ayara Thai near LAX, but it's beyond the westside and has westside prices. :)
Mexican: I'm curious if any of the westside's Mexican spots can even hold a candle to those which you might be eating at now in Northeast L.A. (btw, where the heck is Northeast L.A.?). Personally, I haven't found a solid, go-to spot for Mexican here but I'd love to.
Mitsuwa "Legendary Ramen Fair"
Thanks for the heads up! Bummer I've never heard of this event before.
3 Square Cafe: Crisp Poached Egg on Creamed Spinach (breakfast). Damn good.
Went to 3 Square this morning for breakfast. Tried something worth posting about...
They added a new item to their menu. Not quite sure what it's called, but you can identify it by my title here.
It's a poached egg, lightly-crusted in panko, quickly fried, laid on bed of fresh, creamed spinach, with a few shards of shaved parmesan.
Damn good. Execution was very good too. Sun was out. It's a Friday. Perfect.
Santa Monica.....???
Bay Cities is a good suggestion, but it is only quick if you order ahead of time, or plan on grabbing a hot sandwich from the hot table line.
Pizza at Bloom Cafe - yum
Curious...how was your experience with their service?
My first (and last) time there, I enjoyed the food yet was disappointed with their service. When sh*t happens, I LOVE IT when the staff takes responsibility (because we're all human and it's inevitable). "Oh, I'm sorry! I completely forgot to bring you your wine. I'll return with that right away." Love it.
At Bloom Cafe, however, I had an earful of "Your pizza is coming right out" and then it doesn't. And some of "I'll bring that right away" and they don't.
Pho vs. Ramen [moved from L.A. board]
You're right. You're comparing apples and oranges. Yet, if I *was forced to* pick between the best available pho and ramen in Los Angeles, I'd pick ramen.
Din Tai Fung Alternative?
I noticed a similar problem with J&J...
Aside from tasting "off", over half of the dumplings I ordered had no soup in them. Anyone else have this problem there?
best soup dumplings in LA????
Ditto on Din Tai Fung. However, I've yet to find a place in LA that serves them up as large as the Joe's Shanghai variety. Anyone know?
Best Coffee in LA
Ditto on Intelligentsia.
Nook happens to serve it. I had coffee there a couple weeks ago not knowing who their supplier was, and the quality was apparent with my first sip. Very good stuff. Not sure if all their coffees are at this level, but the blend which they serve is definitely tasty.
How to Clean Hard Anodized Cookware's Exterior
A scotch brite pad and soap works for me. You might also want to try Bar Keeper's Friend for some stubborn stains.

great pizza in west l.a - yes. it's true.
This thread has hung around for so long, and I have nothing to do at the moment, so I figured I'd chime in. :)
Personally, I don't like Abbot's. The bagel dough crust which they use might taste great right out of the oven, but it gets tough and chewy after a while. Abbot's works my jaw like no pizza should.
I've tried Santa Monica Pizza Kitchen. Never again. See my post here:
http://www.chowhound.com/topics/369801
I haven't tried most of the spots mentioned in this thread, but my current vote goes to Bravo Pizzeria. I would normally grub here after 1am on the weekends to soak up the beer in the system, and I would gripe about the dry, lifeless, over-floured crust (due to reheating?), but then one day I ordered an entire pie and it was pretty damn good. Their sauce is consistently rich, fresh tomatoes are sliced (not diced), and the crust is nice and thin. However, I've since ordered a couple more pies and the only problem I've had is with the crust's consistency--too chewy one visit, great the next.
The Kitchen: where is the post?
http://www.chowhound.com/topics/365680
Doesn't surprise me that you couldn't find it. This board has awful Search Results, imo. I usually use Google with the "site:" modifier. For example:
site:chowhound.com "the kitchen"
Shik Do Rak
I like this place for the radish wrapper as well.
However, I (personally) wouldn't call it BBQ because the meat cooks on a skillet-type of contraption, and it doesn't meet any direct flame at all. Fyi. With the collecting fat/oil, it comes out more sauteed than BBQ'ed.
