What Foods Do You Forego in the Name o' Domestic Tranquility?

I could because he would for sure eat it once just to be nice, and then thank me for making dinner. Only I can tell immediately if something is not his fav and maybe I'm too sensitive, but I want him to enjoy what I make. Such a time suck if I put forth the effort and he doesn't like it. I've watched him suffer through many a mexican casserole while eating with friends.

He does love to eat seafood and I once dated a guy that forbade any type of fish or seafood in his presence. I'm quite content now because he enjoys trying new places and I have plenty of opportunity to eat ethnic food when we are apart.

What Foods Do You Forego in the Name o' Domestic Tranquility?

Haha, he truly his ;-) He wanted to make sure that everyone knows that he will eat potato salad and Korean food too!

What Foods Do You Forego in the Name o' Domestic Tranquility?

Great topic!
Beef stew, or any stew.
Most soups
Braises, particularly beef roasts.
Any "weird" potato recipe. Fried, roasted, baked, or mashed only.
No egg, potato, or bread type casseroles. Wait...no casseroles, period.
No Mexican food. He will occassionaly indulge my cravings, but he's so miserable that it is no fun for me. Btw, he adores Taco Hell.
No dinners w/o some type of meat protein.
Rice and Beans are out.
Absolutely no chocolate. Not even my Great Grandmother's beloved chocolate pie.
No almonds, some nuts are okay.
Steak is iffy and always must be ordered or cooked "burnt"
No Thai or Indian. Chinese is about as ethnic as it gets, General Chicken, Holla! Oh and he will eat a gyro occasionally.

I don't give up these things, but almost never eat them with him. He will eat anything that I cook, minus the chocolate, but it will go to waste and it will not be enjoyed so I usually refrain. I do make a lot of soups and stew for my work lunches. It works out.

Pioneer Woman

As I understand it her name started out as a joke among family and friends, and then she spun it into her brand. I don't think it was ever meant to be taken literally. Sure, I'd check out a show about your friend that lives off the grid, I'm sure it would be interesting. Of course, then there would be a thread about how this person sold out to be on TV.

Anything better on a Sunday Morning than Pancakes?

All of those pancakes sound delicious! I'll have to look into the Roumanian pancake. Since we are using up left over ham, it has been ham, eggs, toast with butter and homemade peach jam. Today we splurged with biscuits and gravy. I usually like French Toast for a lazy Sunday AM breakfast. The Huz prefers pancakes.

Really Dumb Food...!

Oh hill food, I totally do this too. It's ridiculous really, but I can't help myself.

Cold Food

This is embarrassing. I prefer the dreaded green bean casserole cold. I even like it before it is baked! Also, pumpkin pie must be ice cold, I can't even eat it if it's warm or room temp.

What's For Easter Dinner?

We always have Easter at my Great Aunt's and it is always the same menu. Always.

Baked Ham with cherry sauce. It has a teaspoon of alcohol in it. The bottle is buried in the kitchen and she's probably been through oh..ONE bottle since I was born.

Pasta salad...only time I eat it all year.
My Mom's potato salad.
Baked Beans.
Deviled Eggs.
A relish tray. I tried adding sweet and spicy pickles one year and that did not go over well.
Hawaiian King rolls with margarine straight out of the tub. Somehow it works on Easter.
And strawberry angel food shortcake with real whipped cream.

When the picky cousins are around she will roast a turkey as well because they don't do ham. It's the same every single year. Also, one of my favorite days to spend with family

"Hitting" on the Waitress (server) Is it OK?

Lol, yeah, because my response totally implied that he throw that little server over his shoulder and stomp out while high fiving the other patrons. "Me man, you little woman!" Add in a chest thump while you're at it.

I think Thursday's suggestion is totally appropriate. In another forum, I would argue that society is increasingly milquetoast. I will concede that asking her out while she is not at work is preferable. However, if that wasn't possible I see no harm in asking in a non-cheesy (i.e. Not joefresh) or creepy way.

How to halve baking recipes?

Eh, I'll probably get yaked at for being unhelpful, but why not just bake the recipe as written with the update? It looks like an easy cake to bake, and one that would be suitable for freezing the other half. There's just a better chance it will turn out properly and if you go messing with it, you won't know if it's due to error or just a bad recipe(her recipes are great by the way).

Check out the blog Dessertfortwo.com

She scales recipes back for you, and I've had good luck with her recipes as well.

"Hitting" on the Waitress (server) Is it OK?

Ah man, I wish that I knew you so I could tell you if you're creepy or not! I'm honestly surprised at all of the "no" answers. Society is so milquetoast these days. I say go for it! It's all in the approach. Thursday has sound advice. Please report back and don't leave us hanging! Oh, and definitely NO NOTE.

New 'Menu Items That Need to Be Retired", 2012 edition...

Oh I feel the reverse! I could live w/o flatbread! Same for cracker crust pizza...ick! I'm all for a nice thin crispy crust, but cracker crust is no bueno for me.

New 'Menu Items That Need to Be Retired", 2012 edition...

It's true. Here in Oklahoma City truffle fries have just begun to make an appearance with some regularity. And they still aren't overdone by any stretch of the imagination. Sweet potato fries have been around for awhile though.

RC,

Yeah even the fast food restaurants are starting to do street tacos. I saw a commercial for Taco Bueno and maybe even Taco Bell, but don't quote me. Such a frickin shame.

New 'Menu Items That Need to Be Retired", 2012 edition...

Ahhh laliz,

I can live with it being taken off restaurant menus but I must keep it in the rotation at home during the summer! I love making tomato basil bruschetta when my tomatoes and basil are outta control.

Tell Me About Your Favorite "Square Meal?"

My square meal happens only 4-5 times per year, but it's a lil slice of heaven when it does.

Chicken fried steak breaded with crushed saltine crackers, mashed potatoes with buttermilk and an obscene amount of butter, cream gravy with the crunchy bits from the steak, green beans cooked with garlic, bacon, and onions. Sometimes corn. Bread will be either rolls or biscuits. Growing up my Granny would only ever buy white bread to tear into pieces and cover with gravy as an extra side to the meal. Dessert is hopefully coconut cream pie, but more often growing up it was banana pudding.

A slightly more often square meal for me is hamburger goulash with fried thin sliced potatoes with onions. Fried damn near in a single layer with a touch of bacon grease for flavor. Takes forever, but it's is worth it in the end.

And as a nod to my New Mexican family, my most often four square meal cooked maybe every 2 months or so is flat cheese enchiladas with green chile. Fresh pinto beans on the side to sop up the extra chile from the enchiladas. Now that's some good eatin'!

Sliced or chopped sweet onion served with all of these meals.

Oh count me in as a cake pop hater. At least with a cupcake there is a chance in hell of it being edible.

Foods Most Eaten

I just love a list.

Mix of oatmeal and oat bran
Spinach
Greek yogurt. 0 or 2%
Diet coke
Chia seeds
Fruit( this week mandarin oranges and always frozen bananas for smoothies)
Popcorn
Tea, hot and iced
Bag of mixed greens for steaming
Various soups (most often potato, lentil, bean, and veggie)

Looking at this list you'd think I'd be thin, but sadly I am not. But I do eat this things weekly.

Costco food finds - 1st quarter 2012 [old]

HaHa, Rella. Your story reminds me!

My sister and I had sushi at a new place that was very bare bones and had only 2-3 people working. We were starving and ordered what we thought was an appropriate amount of sushi. Well, it wasn't. The place was TINY and extremely busy with people waiting outside the door. Instead of ordering more we went to Five Guys and split a burger and fries.

Awesome link. Love that you can see the actual recipes that people have put in their books.

What Are Your Most and Least Favorite Pasta Shapes?

Hilarious!

Dinner party - your best chicken dish??!!

I've made this a few times. Really good and I'm not much of a chicken lover. If the livers freak you out then you can omit them, but they really add to the dish. The livers melt away and I bet your guests will not even know that the liver is in the stuffing. Still tasty without though.

Food Waste - What have you wasted Today/This week/Last week??

Ahh, so there is someone like me! I totally do this as well. I'll only toss obviously soiled food and those pesky out of date yogurts (Only WAY past the date). There are usually some complaints and I never fess up because I know damn well that no one is going to eat that yogurt from May 2010 with the squishy apple that is half frozen in the bowels of the fridge. I'm not a neat freak by any means, but the work fridge is NASTY. And in a hospital no less!

Favourite gifts to receive (food related)

This sounds like a fruit cake that I could get behind! Do you mind sharing the recipe?

What was in your Christmas stocking?

I was so fortunate this year. My stocking contained green pepper jelly, pumpkin honey butter by a purveyor in Nebraska, a set of ceramic knives, and some craft chocolate truffles.

However, my best gift came sans the sock! The gift is from my stepfather who faithfully visits the local thrift store after his 3 mile walk each morning. He gifted me two lovely blue Le Creuset enameled cast iron skillets. He admitted that he paid more for them than he usually would--five whole dollars for the smaller skillet, and a whopping eight dollars for the large skillet. I'm tickled pink! I love a good bargain. They are vintage and perhaps used once. I'll have to do some research on them.

Grocery store pet peeve. Is it just me?

Classic. Sometimes people just need a "hands on" explanation.

Trader Joe's Holiday Items - 2011

I tried the pfeffernusse against my better judgement. Blech. The insides tastes okay and nicely spiced, but the slightly hard too sweet sugary coating ruined it for me.

Best places to eat in OKC

Are you talking about Crabtown in Bricktown? That is a local chain. Not so much worth a special trip. Not awful, but then again I haven't eaten there in years.

Not sure where you're from but Nic's Grill does an excellent burger, but it's lunch only so that might not work for you. If it does, get there early 10:50 is not too early for lunch. Yes, it's that busy and very small.

I also really like Los Comales. The green pork tacos are a fav. I used to love the breakfast burritos. They are probably still good, but sometimes the potatoes are not done enough for me. This place is just down from Cattlemans. Good green and red hot sauce.

I also really like the pollo flautas at Tacos San Pedro. Served with lettuce, avocado sauce, and crema on top. They also have a small self serve salsa bar. And will usually bring out escabeche with your meal.

Red Prime is a fancy, modern steakhouse. And for nicer dining, strip-mall style Signature Grill in Edmond is doing some good food. Get a reservation.

Okc has a fairly large Vietnamese population and therefore a decent Asian district with some good pho.

Let us know what you liked. Hopefuly Bigray will chime in. He knows what's good!

Does anyone actually put stuffing inside the turkey anymore?

My passive aggressive ass would totally be buying a turkey and utilizing my uber special technique of preparing the stuffing. No one the wiser once it makes it to a beautiful serving dish. But that's just me. What a bore to request a contribution, and then also dictate the preparation method.

It must be a hard holiday this year for you--missing your Dad. Thank you for sharing your story of your last Thanksgiving with your Dad. It will serve as a reminder to cherish this holiday with my family.

Thanksgiving 2011: What's on the menu?

We always have sauerkraut salad at TG as well. Way out here in Oklahoma!
