Fried Chicken on Oahu
Thanks for everyone'e help. We actually went to Ono for Poke bowl(7 bucks including drink) which really hit the spot. The next day, went to Gulicks for fried chicken and garlic chicken. Never have been disappointed with Gulicks. Always tasty.

Shave Ice on Oahu
Uncle Clay's sound good. Making a new list of shave ice places to visit the next time I am in town.
Quick Oahu Recap for May visit
I had high hopes for Stage Restaurant. We actually ate the tasting menu that is on their website. The tasting menu on paper sounds pretty amazing. However, there was just no wow factor on any of the dishes to make the meal memorable. There were small flaws in some of the courses (sashimi was served a little warm which made texture of fish seem off). Just little things that at the end of the night, it was just an ok experience.
Napa dinner picks- need suggestions/advice to narrow down the shortlist to 5!
Been to all but Auberge and Etoile. Would pick in this order
1. Meadowood
2. La Toque
3. Redd
4. Bottega
5. Ad Hoc
Would go to Meadowood or La Toque for special dinner. Had an awesome tasting menu at Meadowood and would put it up there near TFL on food alone. TFL still has the whole experience. I haven't been to La Toque for a while but it still is a top 5 in Napa Valley. La Toque was one of the few places where the wine pairings matched and complemented each dish on their tasting menu. Service was formal but not stuffy.

Quick Oahu Recap for May visit
Was on Oahu for a week in May 2011. Unfortunately, I had to work most of the time but did manage to hit a few new places and some old stand bys. Here is a short review of the places we visited.
Mariposa- Flank steak salad, side order of fries and plantation ice tea. This place was packed on sunday. Went there mostly for the view for lunch. Food is good but nothing to write about.
Sansei Restaurant- ate a lot of sushi rolls, too many to remember. Also had too many mai tai's which made the whole night a blur.
Julie'z Restaurant- Lechon Kawali and Pork Adobo- out in Kapolei. Nice flavors. Lechon was crispy and delicious. Adobo was tasty.
Side Street Inn-(the new one) This place is the opposite of the original one. It is very nice inside with the same food(quality and size). One disappointment was the night we went there, they were out of the pork chop. Garlic fries, Ahi Poke, Fried Chicken, Beef Teriyaki , Salad.
Kapahulu Poi Shop- Chicken long rice, Poi, Kahlua Pig, Lomi- Everything was great
Ono Seafood- Poke with everything- great
Morimoto- Ox tail soup and Whole fried fish with mabo tofu sauce. Had some sushi- fish was very fresh.
Leonards- Haupia, Chocolate and Banana(flavor of the month) malasadas
Stage Restaurant- tasting menu- was expecting more.
Ailana Shave Ice- Grape and Haupia- still my favorite shave ice
Gina's BBQ- Spicy Garlic Chicken and Gina' Special Plate- spicy garlic chicken was dry and lacked flavor this time.
Rainbow Drive In- Loco Moco plate and Port. Sausage and Eggs- went here for breakfast
Fukuya- bento plate lunch- arrived late in the afternoon with little selection left
Shiro Saimen- saimen always consistent
Pineapple Room- P.R. burger, spicy chicken sandwich, plantation ice tea- a good lunch experience
Little Village Noodle House- local chinese food was ok. this place was packed when we went
Ailana Shave Ice- Strawberry Crème and Haupia- last trip for shave ice-

Thinking about going to HWAK for cocktails and to watch the sunset. Looking at Haleiwa Joes North Shore for dinner. Any comment on food or view? Thanks.

Plate Lunch on O'ahu: Recommendations and Warnings
Pineapple Room has a very nice loco moco. Totally upscale and definitely not plate lunch.
Shave Ice on Oahu
Coming back to Honolulu next month. Is there any new recommendations for Shave ice?
Kosuke for ramen in Alhambra?
Tried this place yesterday. Also had the tonkotsu ramen with side of spicy tuna roll. My SO had the butter ramen with side of fried gyoza. Both were very tasty and the price points were pretty good. The chashu in the ramen was small but very flavorful. I would return.
Reading mixed reviews of Drago Centro...& love your comments on our DineLA 2011 tentative picks
Went to Elements for Dinner last night. Would go elsewhere. Price to value ratio is not good here.
Thoughts on DineLA2011
Went to Raymond Restaurant in Pasadena for Dine LA 2011 yesterday. It was a great deal. They have the 34 dollar dinner menu and it was delicious.
Shave Ice on Oahu
Ailana shave ice is finer than Matsumoto, maybe the same consistency as Waiola.
Oahu visit August 2010- Food Frenzy
Stayed for 8 days in Honolulu. Here are the highlights. Went to a few new places.
Gulick Deli- Fried Chicken plate- I don't know what's in the chicken, but I like it alot.
Leonards- Pineapple malasada(flavor of the month), li hing mui malasada, Haupia chocolate cake. The Pineapple was surprisingly good. It was a yellow creamy pineapple filling.
Ono Seafood- Ahi poke with everything. The kitchen sink- spicy...
Pineapple Room- Pineapple room burger, plantation ice tea. Food was good, service was good also. No more all you can drink plantation ice tea. You have to get it by the carafe now.
Kakaako Kitchen- I swore I wouldn't come hear again but went here instead of Big City Diner. Had the calamari spinach salad which was tasty.
Thelmas- Had the Thelma's special- lechon with tomato, onions and light soy sauce. addicting.
Liliha Bakery- coco puff and sugar free coco puff.
Side Street Inn- Pork Chops, Pocho clams, Fried chicken, Fried Rice, kim chee yakisoba, gizzards, lilikoi ribs, ribeye steak, It was a feast. Had to wait almost an hour for dinner.
Bubbies- mochi ice cream- they must have 20 different flavors.
Nico Pier 38- Loco Moco- saw this rec on the board. thanks.
Town- when I got here and looked at the menu, I thought this place was going to be a dud. However, the food was very nicely prepared.Had uhu app and porchetta with polenta and bitter greens.
Aiea Bowl- Oxtail soup with ramen noodles.- I don't get this very often at other places but it was very good.
Sekiya- Saimen and hash tempura- hash tempura is very addicting. pop in your mouth and enjoy.
Char Hung Sut- mai tai soo and pork hash
Shimazu Store- Shave ice- strawberry cream, melon cream and chocolate. all the flavors i chose were home made. The small size was huge.
Ailana Shave Ice- Haupia and Strawberry cream- The best I have had on the island so far.
Jimbo- Udon and katsu curry- thought that there would be ramen here.
Shiro Saimen- saimen- always good
Highway Inn- Teriyaki poke, kimchee tako- surprisingly the teriyaki poke was very good, the kimchee tako was unique and also good.
Alan Wongs= Chef tasting menu at the counter. It was a very nice experience to sit and watch the action in the kitchen. Everyone was very friendly and the food as always pretty great.
Rainbow Drive Inn- chicken with gravy plate- I get this dish 90% of the time. Need to try something different next time. Need recs.
Diamond Head Market- Blueberry scone and terichicken musubi
KCC Farmers Market- Pineapple, abalone, kahuku corn on the cob. I missed the mochi covered fresh strawberries yet again. Need to get there earlier.

Shave Ice on Oahu
Thanks for the new suggestions for shave ice. I am always willing to try someplace new. However, I will always go back to Ailana until I find someplace better.
Shave Ice on Oahu
Tried a couple new places this time. Here is my personal preference for Shave Ice on Oahu.
1. Ailana Shave Ice- Shave ice is extra fine and toppings are made with real fruit. Had the Strawberry Creme and Haupia. Also, tried the Tropical Trio which was also very good. Located right behind Ala Moana Mall with parking.
2. Shimazu Store- Toppings are also homemade (well some of them) I got the small and it was pretty huge.
3. Ice Garden- I always get the one with the flan and condensed milk topping.
4. Waiola Shave Ice- This used to be my number 1 but others have surpassed it.
5. Matsumoto Shave Ice- I like the toppings but the ice needs to be finer and its far from town.
6. Tropicana- I did not like this one. Maybe an off day. The toppings tasted old.
7. Island Snow- This was just bad. This tasted like a snow cone, not shave ice.

Best BACON in Los Angeles. Prepared or for Take Home
Wolfgang's bacon was great. Extra thick and tasty.
The Pineapple Room
When this place is on, the food is just as good as Alan Wongs. Unfortunately, the service will never match the flagship restaurant.
Oahu Good Eats- a quick review
We went to the Original Waiola Store- forgot to mention that I had a chocolate/banana shave ice the second time we went and it was pretty good.
If we would have told Char Hung Sut that the manapua was for the plane ride home, they would have packed it for the plane. No problems getting the grub on the plane or eating it on the plane.
The Calamari salad is one of the few stand out dishes at Kakaako. I will try the chicken fried chicken next time.
Oahu Good Eats- a quick review
I guess it is becoming an annual trip to Oahu instead of every other year. Here are places we tried this time with comments.
1. Kakaako Kitchen- Beef stew and sweet and sour pork chops. I don't want to flame this place but after the first time I was here and had the furikaki crusted ahi, it was kinda down hill from there. Probably eaten here around 4 or 5 times, a little disappointing.
2. Costco- Ahi shoyu poke and garlic shrimp poke- always fresh but getting a little expensive. Used to be a steal.
3. Gina's BBQ- Kalbi, BBQ beef, BBQ chicken, Mandoo, Spicy Garlic Chicken, Chicken wings, Squash jun. Ordered a bunch of mixed plate lunches. The standout was the spicy garlic chicken. I only ordered this because someone in front on me in line said it was the best.... and it was.
4. Leonards-Mango, Chocolate and Haupia malasadas... i love these.
5. Kuaina Burger-Went to the original and had the bacon cheeseburger with fries. I thought this was better than Ward Center Kuaina Burger.
6. Diamond Head Grill-ahi with wasabi butter, bbq chicken , bbq beef, grilled shimp. good but a little pricy.
7. Matsumoto Shave Ice- Hawaiian rainbow w/ ice cream- best flavors
8. Shiro Saimen- Dodompo ramen- has everything- very satisfying
9. Waiola Shave Ice-Rainbow shave ice- best ice
10. Liliha Bakery- Coco Puff, Apple Malasada, Azuki Malasada, Banana Cup Cake w/ Chantilly cream- everything was tasty.
11.Sam Choy- King Crab legs and BBQ ribs- They were having this as an anniversary special for 20 bucks. Great deal.
12. Gulick Deli- Bento box combo- went to the King St location, should have gone to the original location.
13. Tropicana Shave Ice- I didn't like this one. Flavors were off.
14. Ono Seafood- Ahi poke w/ everything, ahi lomi lomi, dried ahi, dried ahi poke. Great.
15. Libby Manapua- BBQ pork Manapua, half moon and pork hash. Pork hash was great, half moon ok, i like Char Hung Sut manapua a little better.
16. Aiea Bowl- Tasty Chicken, furikaki ahi, garlic fries. This place is a sleeper. The food is great.
17. Ice Garden-Pudding w/ milk shave ice. good but getting expensive
18. Side Street Inn-Fried Pork Chop, Pocho Clams, garlic edamame, cold tofu, chicken salad, whole steamed fish, lop chong fried rice, bbq ahi, kimchee yakisoba- a lot of great food at reasonable prices. go with a big group.
19- Alan Wong's- 7 course tasting menu- great as usual.
20. Nisshodo- chi chi dango, peanut butter mochi, coconut mochi.
21. Rainbow Drive In- Chili Dog Plate
22. Bubbies Ice Cream- haupia ice cream and assorted mochi ice creams. this plac e is very hard to find with the nav.
23. Pineapple Room- Steamed onaga w/ tofu, lop cheung, and veges, Halo halo dessert, plantation ice tea. Service was better this time.
24. Char Hung Sut-steamed bbq pork manapua, ma tai soo, pork hash- for the plane ride home.
