What a perfect description of El Charro!! I thought I was the only one who felt squeezed in their booths. Thankfully they have tinted windows so I can't easily be spotted eating there.

Lamb Tongue Sandwich?

I second Attari for great tongue sandwiches. Torino Sandwiches in Altadena also serves a delicious tongue sandwich.

Thanksgiving pick up in La Canada/ Pasadena/ Glendale?

I've never tried Frank's but it sounds like a good deal. How is their regular menu? Any recommendations?

Thanksgiving pick up in La Canada/ Pasadena/ Glendale?

I think I saw a sign at Black Cow Cafe in Montrose this weekend with a pre-ordered Thanksgiving meal package. I don't remember the details but it sounded like what you might be looking for. Give them a call for details.

Stuffed Grape Leaves

Hayat's Kitchen is great. Mantee Cafe has some great dolmas as well. Old Fashion Deli in Glendale on Verdugo sells them with meat as well as vegetarian.

This is when the magic "palming" technique comes in...

1. wash hands thoroughly.
2. hold naked, unwrapped burger in one hand for eating... preferrably the favored hand (lefty or righty)
3. cup second clean hand underneath burger... also known as the intern hand... since it can't quite hold a slippery burger with efficiency yet
4. bite into burger and reclaim the lost goodness from the back end of the burger into intern hand
5. chase the bite of burger with contents of the intern hand once mouth is cleared of the bite.

No judgement here folks... we're biting a burger shoved with chili and cheese so eating technique is still an art in progress.

Who makes a really outstanding roast (or rotisserie) chicken?

I remember reading a Top 10 (or 20, don't remember) article on roasted or rotisserie chicken in Los Angeles. After much searching, I can't seem to find the article. Can anyone help me with a link to it?

I'd like to go on my own chicken run:)

French Hot Dog Buns

Berolina Bakery in Montrose may have what you're looking for. Schreiner's Meats (next door to them) uses Berolina's rolls for their hot dogs and knackwurst sandwiches.

Try the taco truck in the body shop parking lot on Fair Oaks... on the east side of the street south of Del Mar.

spicy fried chicken

I agree that the Vermont location is more fresh, and it is my preferred location. I heard that the Vermont location is the only one left in LA but I may be misinformed.

I was at Jim Dandy recently, and their spicy fried chicken is as good as ever. I wish they would open up a place in the valley.

Best food truck

I also concur with the advice to put the food trucks on the back burner.

Have your fiancee drive to Santa Monica to Bay Cities Deli and have the godmother sandwich. Or drive down Westwood Blvd. to Atari Sandwich Shop for some tasty Armenian/Iranian sandwiches (I recommend the Koo-Koo sandwich if you're adventurous). After Atari, stroll across the street and have some rose water and/or saffron ice cream.

If you want to experience food truck central, head east on Wilshire Blvd just east of Fairfax in front of the museum where you'll find a ton of food trucks parked. My recommendation would be to keep driving past the food trucks to Alvarado, make a right and then a left on 7th and head to Langer's for the #19 sandwich.

Lots of good eats in LA... enjoy your visit!!

Saturday night dinner: Providence vs. Mozza

Both are great but you can try what my friends and I have done a couple of times... eat a late/light lunch at Mozza (3pm-ish reservations) and then drive down the street to Providence for their 5:30pm seating dessert tasting menu.

Carne Asada Burrito or Taco in Los Angeles

Drive to Colorado Blvd in Eagle Rock, just west of Eagle Rock Blvd in front of the Comfort Inn after 8:30pm any weeknight (weekends too but the guy who runs the truck on weekends doesn't prepare the food the same way) and you'll see a rundown-looking truck parked there. That's Fred's truck. He's been serving up carne asada for over 30 years in the same truck and location and ONLY carne asada. It is the best carne asada I've ever had, and I've been eating there for almost 20 of those 30 years. Treat yourself to a carne asada quesadilla, and an all-meat burrito with (only) salsa and cheese. EVERYONE I've taken there has become addicted. On my 39th b-day, my friend and I had the quesadilla and burrito, and then drove to Providence for the dessert tasting menu afterwards... THAT is how good the carne asada is. Now stop reading this post and GO!!! Enjoy!!

Lamajeune (Armenian Pizza) in SFV?

The best I've ever had (and I've been eating lahmajune since I was a kid) is Taron Bakery in Hollywood, Glendale, or North Hollywood. They also make great spinach and cheese beoregs.

Custom salads in and around North Hollywood?

Healthyca on Lankershim makes some outstanding salads (my favorite is the ratatouille salad) along with tasty sandwiches. The Gelson's salad bar on Laurel Canyon Blvd is one of the best around.
