Coffee Snob in Search of a fix
believe it or not, a couple of the baristas at Peets in Hillcrest do a really good job - the shortish dude with the forward combed hair and the tall blonde woman. The last time I was there I had to have a new barisat re-make my drink though, so it's not always consistent.
I really need to try Zumbar. I go to a gym in Kearny Mesa and I very often stop at Peets afterwards for coffee - one of these days I'll have to swing by there instead.
Permanent market for local farmers?
I think SOL and what you are talking about are two different things. There is still a plan afoot for something like this in the old police station by Seaport Village - supposedly it will contain a Pizzeria Mozza. I don't have time to look up the link to the article now, but I just saw something about it a month or so ago on SOSD.com
Underbelly
Clearly, everyone who goes in there needs to ask for a spoon! I have never known them to bow to pressure on any of these other ridiculous restrictions though, so I doubt it would work here.
Regardless, I do love the idea - something different for SD - and I plan on trying it for lunch next week - should be interesting!
Where do you source your Thanksgiving turkey in San Diego and what is your favorite cooking method for it?
I saw that - but $145 is a lot for a turkey, even a humanely raised one. We don't absolutely have to have one this year since we are joining friends for the meal - so we will probably pass.

Curtis did turkeys last year, but not this year. I'm bummed - we fried one of his last year, and since it was not just a giant ball of breast meat, it worked really well. Still looking for a similar option for this year!
Superdiners!
Wasn't really making a comment on what the chefs on the list had to say, as much as the fact that the only two meaningful comments (imo anyway) came from chefs. Sorry if that was unclear.
best milkshake?
Second the Beef n Bun recommendation. I also had a malted peanut butter milkshake at Ruby's the other day and it was smashing. Corvette also does good milkshakes if you can tolerate the environment. :)
Superdiners!
I think it's interesting that the two chefs are the only ones who really offered any meaningful commentary. The rest of it seems a little redundant - mostly about the scene and the lightbulbs. I haven't tried it yet, now that they're open for lunch I may try to swing down there. I am also more than a little amused that my boss - Gary Schons - is on this list. That's more than a little weird.
Market Restaurant + Bar
Just FYI - Brandt is not grass fed beef, it is wholly grain/corn fed. It's a common misconception that their beef is somehow more humanely raised. It might be on some level, but not in terms of what the cattle are fed. It is is a lot more expensive than other brands.
I like Market a lot - the atmosphere is a bit sterile, but the food is always very good. Carl is a fantastic chef.
Superdiners!
So I guess this is what they had in mind...

Sprinkles Cupcakes in UTC--does it live up to the hype?
I think their dark chocolate and red velvet are great - the strawberry, lemon, banana and vanilla can be a little tough sometimes for some reason. Also love carrot and chocolate marshmallow (a must if you like the old fashioned hostess cupcakes!) As you can see, I have tried just about every flavor! I am hoping to get up there on a Tuesday soon, to try the orange. :)

The guys at PLS told me to ice them down before cooking specifically for that reason. It seemed to work. The thrashing when you pick them up is a little unnerving though!
Favorite seafood dishes at The Fish Market?
It was pretty good! We had a half dozen Fanny Bay oysters, which were lovely, but I missed having a mignonette (not sure if you can request it, they were gone before we had a chance.) They were served with lemon, grated horseradish and cocktail sauce We ate a lot of their fresh hot bread with soft butter. We also shared a dinner salad which was very standard, some very good fried calamari and a bucket of Washington Manila clams. The clams were nice and plump, but there was some kind of dried herb flavor in the liquid/broth that I wasn't crazy about. Next time I would ask them to leave it out if they can.
We had to wait a while for seats at the oyster bar, and the sushi bar and regular dining room were also very busy. (Just to clarify, this was the Harbor Drive location.)
San Diego Restaurant Week
Totally agree. Unless everyone in your party would order three courses otherwise (and that's not very likely) Restaurant Week just is not a bargain. I've also encountered some disappointing menu changes and strange menu offerings. Like the AR Valentien menu that offered "family style" more casual dishes rather than their usual elegant farm to table fare. It almost turned me off to the restaurant entirely. After several years of participating, we had an absolutely terrible RW meal at El Bizcocho a couple of years ago, and that was finally it for us.
Do real bagels (boiled) exist in San Diego County?
Wow, I remember those! I used to love going to the store in LJ - when I was a kid, our Jewish neighbors used to take me. I always got the onion bialy.
Bizzare Foods San Diego
I am pretty sure that was an Ortolan - it sounds like the same scene he describes in Medium Raw.
Cool, hip places to eat in San Diego...on the cheap?
Try Prep Kitchen, owned by the same people at Whisknladle - on Fay near the Vons. If you're willing to leave LJ, you might like Starlite - just a few minutes south on 5 - take the Sassafras exit and turn right on India. El Pescador and Burger Lounge are also pretty good and inexpensive.

Where can I buy smoked salmon?
hot smoked isn't served hot - it's just the way it's prepared. My hunch is hot smoked is actually more travel safe than cold, but I'm not absolutely sure about that.
Where can I buy smoked salmon?
PLS does hot smoked fish - I am sure it is good but I prefer Lox style. In my lobster searching, I noticed that The Fish Market makes Nova Lox. It's the only local source that I know of - will have to pick some up and try it out sometime before I order from the E. Coast again.
Buying Live Maine Lobster in San Diego?
when did you last order from them? Do they have Maine or just local lobsters?
Buying Live Maine Lobster in San Diego?
So, end report - the lobsters from Point Loma Seafood were excellent, but expensive - they are a minimum 1 3/4 pounds and I wound up with mostly two pounders. They tried to charge me $15.95 a pound and said the $13.95 price was a special - but I protested and they gave me the lower price.
The finished dish was fantastic - I used this recipe - http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-live/jfk-lobster-stew-recipe/index.html but I thought it was a little bland so I cooked up about half a package of that Trader Joes pre- chopped shallot/onion/garlic mixture in some butter and sherry and stirred it in. It chilled overnight - just before serving, I cooked up the lobster in butter and more sherry and added it. Would probably use at least 3/4 lobster per serving next time though - the servings were a little skimpier on meat than I would have liked. I had planned to add gnocchi, but it cooked up too doughy. Here's a little before and after shot :)

Need help deciding on a wedding caterer in San Diego
If you are looking to spend quite a bit of money for top quality, Waters Catering is the best in town. French Gourmet gives good bang for the buck, IMO. Peartrees and Festivities are also pretty good but also pretty expensive - would save money & use FG or go all out with Waters instead. Congratulations and good luck!

That's the recipe! Not sure I have time to drive to Escondido tomorrow, but I will consider it. Thanks for all the help!
Favorite seafood dishes at The Fish Market?
A friend and I have been musing about going down there for this exact meal - think this may just tip it into happening. It was her birthday this week after all...
Buying Live Maine Lobster in San Diego?
It looks like that is the best option. Point Loma Seafood has them for $13.95 a pound, live - the lobsters they carry are 1.75 lbs each, a little bigger than I had originally wanted, but I'm told the tail meat will be too small on anything under 1.5 lbs. Wish me luck!
