$30 Challenge - Any suggestions?

Bungalow is one of my go-to spots - I work across the street from Shirlington Village. I LOVE their fried pickles. They are addictive!

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions! I'll post the link to my blog with the challenge results. I work in Arlington, so I'll have to hit some of these places on my lunch hour! Thanks for getting me out of Shirlington!

Good ideas, but I want to be a little out-the-box with this challenge. El Pollo Rico is something you would expect to see done in a challenge like this.

That's bang for your buck right there! Is the special offered on the weekend? I'm attempting to do this adventure tomorrow.

Suburbs ok...Tax included, tip doesn't count towards total (I like to reward good food and good service!) Carryout is fine, especially since I want to visit the Newseum and either the Spy Museum or the Museum of Crime and Punishment.

Eastern Market

There is a great stand outside that has an AMAZING black bean dip..I think it's called Wisteria Farms...but I may be making that up. Definitely second everyone's views about the Market - go with nothing specific in mind and you'll find some great stuff. One of my fav places in DC, and I'm a native Washingtonian.

Hi Chowhounders!

I'm doing a special article for my blog and I want to do 3 meals in DC for $30 - $10 per meal. Area is not an issue, but I want to get some bang for my bucks and keep my readers interested. Any suggestions? Looking for a good breakfast, lunch, and dinner - preferably Metro accessible, but am willing to get my car if need be.

Thanks for your help!

Restaurants Everyone Loves Except You

Gotta agree with you on Paper Moon. I've never been completely wowed by the food there. I've always gone on a "late-night leaving the club" kinda deal so never really paid too much attention to the service. But the food is never to die for good.

Restaurants that live up to the hype

Mine would have to be Oyamel. Heard a lot about it and finally went last Friday. I got there before the after-work crowd and my waiter was fantastic - he suggested a few dishes and I loved them all. Kellari would be another one. I had their pre-theater special - it remains the best meal I've had all year.

Los Angeles Food Lover visiting DC This Weekend. Need Help Fine Tuning My Hit List!

Steve:

FYI: Pimento Grill isn't in Anacostia. It's East of the River, but not in Anacostia. Definitely agree with you on the quality of Jamaican food though...I'm a huge fan of their jerk shrimp and their oxtails.

I'm so glad I read this! I had Acqua Al 2 on my "Gotta get there list". May have to move it to my "maybe I'll try it one of these days" list.

Need help choosing 3 dinners in Dupont Circle area

They have a pre-theater menu that is $35 per person for 3 courses. Each dish I had was amazing.

Kellari on 17th and K is excellent Mediterranean seafood. I had a meal there with a friend not too long ago and was BLOWN AWAY. http://www.kellaridc.com It's not too far from DuPont Circle. The Farragaut North metro is right across the street.

Balimore Aquarium Tomorrow. Need food before and after torture.

Chipparelli's in Little Italy is probably the best Italian spot. A lot of people rave about Sabatino's...I wasn't impressed. Della Notte is also decent.

I don't think it's a case of bad luck - I've been to all three locations and the food has never wow'd me. Mine would be Grace's Mandarian at the National Harbor. Everyone raved about the food before I visited - SUPREMELY disappointed. The ambiance was nice, but the food did not live up to everyone's reviews.

The Basics: How to Make Hummus

Thank you so much for sharing the tahini emulsion tip! I made hummus for the first time a few weeks ago, and I could not figure out why it was so grainy. I'll try that next time.
