San Francisco SECOND wave independent coffee houses

A recommendation for what I think may be the best coffee house in town, with terrific baked goods is Andytown in the outer Sunset. Kind of out of the way, but totally worth the trip.

San Francisco SECOND wave independent coffee houses

lets just say the chances of getting a well constructed drink at a "third wave" place is a lot better than at old school joints.

"third wave" is actually more than light roasts. For one, they actually clean the portofilter after pulling a shot. There are more differences of course which basically insures a much better drink than you would get at an old school place.

The 2.5 wave Coffee Bar in the Financial district serving Mr. Espresso beans is on a par with the better places in the city. Much better then the 2.0 wave places like Roma, and Trieste.

Coffee Beans... esp darker roasts

If you especially like dark roasts, you may give this one a try.

I buy either the Redbird espresso blend or the Blue Jaguar blend. I only drink espresso and espresso drinks so I may not be able to help you if you drink regular drip or pour over. I have had the Brazil Sweet Blue on a couple of occasions prepared with a pour over set up and it was delicious.

You can't beat Redbird's five LB free shipping deal. Great coffee, fast delivery, just a great roaster. Split up the five LB into mason jars and freeze until you need. I've been ordering from Redbird for a few years now and have never been dissapointed.

Tax on Loaf of Bread?

Does a grocery store charge tax on a loaf of bread? Sounds like a definite rip off to me.

What are your thoughts on the city's coffee offerings?

i was referring to the statement that "Temple was a touch better than Verve" I don't know how one could make that statement.

As for my statement defending Cafes I was not referring to Starbucks etc. Since the poster was describing his experience at a Cafe that surely does know how to pull a proper espresso, that was the type of cafe I was referring to. I should have made that clearer.

You are correct that turnover of the employees may have an effect on the quality of an individual drink or experience of one customer, but as a whole these cafes train their 'barista' better than the people at Starbucks or Peets or Philz (who don't even make espresso drinks)

By the way I am also a very happy customer of Redbird. I really don't go out for coffee very much anymore. The two places I have gone to lately that I liked was Pinhole on Cortland and Andytown in the outer sunset.

What's better for you might not be better for someone else. And considering what we are talking about, what you like today, you may not like tomorrow.

As for cafe's not knowing how to make good coffee? I would say most if not all know how. But, it's much easier making one espresso drink at home then it is turning them out continuously all day long.

Alone but not lonely: Technivorm "one cup" vs. Bonavita 5 coffeemaker

"It needs to be descaled every three months or so"

Big mistake. Many distributers of home espresso machines are voiding warrantees if descaled at home. Pieces of scale coming loose can find it's way into the tiny passages. I know this is not an espresso machine, but the same dangers to a lesser degree come into play here.

If you use a softer water with a TDS rating of less than 50, you likely will never have to descale.

All I want is a good cup of coffee at home. [moved from General Topics]

Neither. Up your ante a little and buy a decent grinder and a simple pour-over setup.

Verve Espresso at Cafe Zoe in Menlo Park

It's a shame Melanie. Not training employes on how to make a simple espresso drink makes it moot what kind of beans are used.

Market Shoppers: Get out of the quick check out line. You have too many items...

Give me a break. This whole argument is not about ten seconds. What it's about is consideration for others. The same people who hold shoppers up for ten seconds are usually guilty of other thoughtless transgressions.

If more people acted like gregarious, this whole conversation wouldn't exist.

One more auto related pet peeve. Those people waiting in the left lane at a red light who wait until the light turns green to signal they want to make a turn.

Market Shoppers: Get out of the quick check out line. You have too many items...

So I guess when you're at a red light that changes to green and that car in front of you waits ten seconds before recognizing the change of color doesn't bother you? After all, that ten seconds doesn't really affect you.

Market Shoppers: Get out of the quick check out line. You have too many items...

Probably because that same person who takes 10 seconds to put their card away, probably waited until the checker completed ringing up the order before digging for the card.

Rudest grocery checker remark

Some supermarket customers should look in the mirror. While I'm not a checker, I am a vendor that spends up to four hours in one particular store four days a week. I have seen every example of idiocy known to man.

This week took the cake. A customer decided to use a shelf in the chip section like it was a latter to reach the top shelf. After ruining between 30-40 bags of chips, two chrome shelves, plus the supporting uprights that held the whole section together, they just left, not telling anyone anything.
