visiting, sunset area [San Francisco]

Hi folks,

I will be visiting for 10 days and staying in the sunset area. We are on a budget and would like some ideas of good chow at a reasonable price. We are omnivores and adventurous eaters. Any ideas would be great. We will also have a car. Please chowdogs, tell me where we should eat and also what to miss. I promise reports.

gravlax

I find if I press the fish between two nesting glass baking pans and use flat weights from the gym, I get wonderful, dense, transparent gravlox.

Outstanding Soup

I just had a wonderful bowl of Hue Soup at IPho. It consisted of a lovely spicy beef broth with chunks of stew meat (I'm not good at figuring out what type it was, but it had a nice fattiness, and connective tissue). The soup included nice, plump, round rice noodles, about the width of a soda straw. Fantastic and warmed my soul with memories of Hue.

Where are the donuts?

Actually,
I've tried your old fashioned Cub ones and was pleased! I'll consider the White Trash ones, but it requires frying and I hate doing that.

Where are the donuts?

Thanks for all the advice. It seems I will be on the donut hunt soon. For me, its cake donuts or apple fritters. I will check out The Bakers Wife (thanks KT), and Cub!?(Thanks IBEW) soon. With this colder weather, its time for a sweet carb fix.

Where are the donuts?

There seems not to be a donut culture here in the cities. I have lived all over the country and most locations have donuts and a culture of donuts and donut shops. What is going on in the twin cities? I don't get it. Please hounders, I need my fix, and I don't know where to go. I have been to grandmas in West St. Paul and they are really good, but its such a trek. Any ideas of good donuts closer to the core cities?

Best Indian/Thai in Mpls between airport and Mpls

There seems to be a new Indian Restaurant opening in the Lucy's location on the kiss of death corner of Franklin and 31st. Hopefully they can make it.

Rusty Taco - Awful!

I went to Rusty Taco on Lexington for a taco tonight and was so disappointed. First, their "tip jar" was labeled as "complaints" and indicated that less than a dollar would be unacceptable. That was the ambiance. I hoped maybe the tacos would make up for that, but no, they were awful, expensive, and cold. The tortillas had not been heated, the contents were lackluster, and all in a waste of $5.00 for two bad tacos.
I have lived in Mexico and I know what a good taco is, and I would go to Taco Bell before I return to this place. Just awful.

True Thai (supposedly) closed down for business last night according to City Pages.

I am sorry to see a community business have hard times, but the name was a misnomer. This was not the "true thai" of my experiences. Newer spots have much more authentic Thai food, Om's for one.

St. Paul Whole Foods is moving to the corner of Snelling and Selby.

I just left, too. Outside of the stupid SUV's taking up two spaces, nothing else left a bad taste in my mouth or offended my olfactory nerves.

A Quest for Burger Greatness

I also like the Nook quite a bit. For a more upscale burger, try the burger and fries at Meritage. I also like the burger at Bon Vie on Selby, and I'd say it is of better quality than the nook for a slightly higher price.

Origami Uptown - :-)

I went today for lunch at Origami uptown, and while the food was delicious, it was virtually empty. When speaking to the server, he said that they were a bit worried about whether lunch will continue. Folks, check them out for lunch and keep them open during the day, please. The atmosphere is beautiful, the food continues to be steller and the lunch specials are better than reasonable in cost. Uptown needs a good sushi restaurant open for lunch. Keep origami in mind.

Recipes You've Never Heard of Outside Your Family

I'll play, this sounds truly gross, but my grandfather loved to eat his spaghetti with meat sauce or spaghetti and stewed chicken enhanced with globs of strawberry or pineapple jam. Actually it is not bad. Rounds out the flavors, sweet and savory.
