Richmond, VA to Asheville, VA - I 81 - Looking for some great places to eat along the way
Is this by any chance, my pal BMHardy??? If so - HEY! If not, well....hey! ;-). I have a SLIGHT detour recommendation for BBQ. At Greensboro, you can go north just slightly (20-ish mile detour) to Reidsville NC and Short Sugar's BBQ: http://shortsugarsbar-b-q.com/ . It's what I grew up on. The sauce is different from any other sauce I’ve ever had – it isn’t Eastern clear vinegar or Western tomato. I buy giant jugs of it when I go to visit my grandmother and can it in jars. You can only go on Saturday, though. Like most small town BBQ joints, it's closed Sunday. If you don't feel like making the detour, I’ve heard good things about Stamey’s in Greensboro. http://www.stameys.com/ They are closed Sunday, too. Have a great trip!
Cheap Eats in the Gayborhood needed
Thanks so much for all your help! I've passed on the advice to my daughter and she says thank you, too! I let her know about the general Philly board, so she can get some specific info.
Cheap Eats in the Gayborhood needed
Daughter and three friends are headed to Philly this weekend and need some inexpensive B,L&D places. They are taking a bus, so they need to concentrate on the Gayborhood and places that they can get public transportation to and from. Thanks so much!
Laguna Beach Recommendations - Healthy Eating
Thanks so much for such quick replies! I just ordered a gift card from Zinc Cafe - it is about a 5 minute walk from his apartment I like that he can use the gift for meals or for 'ingredients'.
Laguna Beach Recommendations - Healthy Eating
BIL has moved to Laguna Beach and his BD is coming up this month. I'd like to send him a gift card for a restaurant. He's increasingly crunchie, almost vegetarian, thinks organic supplements will save countless lives, has a Vitamix and uses it exclusively to make bright green smoothies . He's also single and very hip. Any ideas for me?
Richmond - Frank's West
Where are the locations? I'd like to try. We go to either Mary Angela's in Carytown or Nonnie's on Nuckols (owned by the same people). Thanks! Kim
New to Greensboro - looking for good, down-to-earth restaurants!
I would second the previous recommendation for Short Sugar's in Reidsville. The pork is good, but the sauce is fantastic. I buy a gallon jug when I visit my grandmother and use it here in Richmond for local (and lesser) bbq.

mini crustless quiche
No need to put anything in the bottom. I've used Giada De Laurentiis' recipe with great success:

Weekend in Richmond, VA
Great to know about the NY Deli. We haven't been since it reopened and I'm glad to know the sailor is the same. Haven't been to the Butchery yet - will try soon. Thanks for the report!

Greensboro to Danville on 29 BBQ and all else...
Yes, Short Sugar's is fantastic. But the one in Reidsville is the place to go to. The one in Danville isn't as good, in my opinion.
NC Regional Snacks?
To drink: Sundrop - icy cold and in a glass bottle, if you can get it. Nectar. Of. The. Gods.
The new Kroger in Midlothian, VA
I agree about Ukrops taking Richmond for granted! I work at the Fresh Market and I hear that ALL the time. People seem to be sick of Ukrops thinking that they own Richmond and also of the influence that the Ukrops family has over the areas in Richmond outside of the realm of food.
I have noticed lately that both Kroger and Ukrops have started to carry items that you could only find at The Fresh Market before. I think the competition is great for the area.
Virginia-Style Brunswick Stew
Here is one I have developed over the last 25 years:
Brunswick Stew
This is another one of my inexact list of ingredient recipes. You have to come up with your own measurements because I make it different everytime and it cooks for 2 days and I add a dash of this and that until it tastes right. I usually start in a dutch oven on top of the stove and finish in a crock pot. I also use an immersion blender to mush it up a bit.
Whole chicken
smoked ham hock
low sodium chicken broth
celery
onion - cut in half - don't bother to peel
carrots - broken in half - don't bother to peel
crushed canned tomatoes
potatoes - cubed
carrots - sliced
butter beans - frozen or fresh
corn - frozen or fresh
peas - frozen or fresh
green beans - canned or fresh
chopped onion - sauteed in oil
pepper
hot sauce
worchestershire sauce
bbq sauce (I use Montgomery Inn)
thyme
garlic
lemon juice
Simmer the chicken and ham hock in chicken broth with celery, onions and carrots until tender. Reserve stock, discard vegetables. Shred chicken and discard skin and bones. Cut meat off hock and mince fine. Defat the stock.
In a large stock pot, put the chicken, ham, and the rest of ingredients to taste. You have to decide how tomatoey or clear (stock) you want it and how much of the vegetables you want. Cook on very low heat for 5-10 hours.

What's the big deal with Girl Scout Cookies?
Well, this person actually does, yes. I think Thin Mints, especially frozen taste...good. And I know that it isn't in style anymore for dessert items to be sweet, but there you go - I like my sweets...sweet. Cookies, cakes, doughnuts - I like 'em sweet.

Need a great cake in Richmond!
Daughter is graduating from college in May. I need a recommendation for a fabulous bakery for the celebratory cake. We have no interest in your basic sheet cake with a mortarboard ;-) - daughter has great taste - in both meanings of the word. Help, please!
Crinkle Cut Fries
You just decided my lunch! I have a bag in the freezer. Just wish I had some beef gravy - drool!
Indian Catering for Grad. Party in Richmond
Daughter is graduating from VCU in May. She has decided that she wants Indian food. I am figuring on a mid day party - casual, snack stuff (as opposed to entire buffet meal). I am not a big fan of the cuisine and therefore won't be cooking and really don't even know where to start looking for and trying decide on a restaurant! Can anyone send me in a good direction for a restaurant that would sell large portions and could you also suggest what items would be good for this type of party? We live in Glen Allen. Thanks, much. Kim
Interesting low-end food in Richmond?
Try Mojo's on Cary right at VCU - here's a link: http://www.mojotogo.com/index.php?id=12
Casual, good, VCU hangout. Cheeseburger sub is a standout! Kim
Buffalo Chicken Dip, Day 2
I do it with bleu cheese - it seems to make more sense to me. I do add a Ranch dressing mix packet, though: http://recipecircus.com/recipes/Kimberlyn/APPETIZERS/Buffalo_Chicken_Dip.html
What is your baby eating currently that cracks you up?
My daughter's first regular food (not pureed) was a garlic bagel. She delicately picked off the toasted garlic pieces, ate them and then gnawed the bagel - she cried the entire way home in her car seat when we took it away from her for the drive (we were afraid she'd choke).
Her chosen grocery store 'bribe' (what she'd get if she were good the entire time) was an whole garlic pickle from the deli. My car reeked of garlic for years.

Milk chocolate cake?
I am a milk chocolate lover and think that German Chocolate cake is a good not-too-dark chocolate cake.
Casual, fun, good food (Greek?)
I second Taverna Cretekou. Been going there since I was in high school in the 70's and went fairly recently and had a great meal. The fried kassari was wonderful! A plus is the neighborhood is beautiful for a post dinner walk/drive.
Maid Rites....
Here's a recipe - not tried and true:

If you ask about a loose meat sandwich, you might have some luck finding recipes.
Christmas Brunch.....best recipes list.....bring 'em on!
One thing that is a lot of fun and has worked well for us is Fondue French Toast. You just set it up at a safe place, provide cut up assorted breads, beaten eggs and the fondue pot and forks. People do their own and you have a separate area for toppings.
Am I missing something? RE: Tobacco Co. Rest.
I have been reading some other boards and keep seeing self proclaimed food enthusiasts praising the Tobacco Co. in Richmond, VA. I haven't eaten there in years and wasn't at all impressed when I did. I found it very ordinary and loud. I always thought that it was like a locally owned fern bar. Has something changed? Am I missing something by automatically discounting it when considering restaurants here?
Philosophy on Thanksgiving
What I always think is that I can do all the experimenting I want 364 days a year. Thanksgiving is about tradition, as Sarah says above. There is something very, very special about eating the same things, the same way every year. Stories get passed down about how an aunt who always brought something odd. Kids make turkey-shaped place cards out of silhouettes of their hands. Three generations taste the stuffing and adjust seasonings before it goes in the turkey. These things matter - it is surprising how much they matter; especially to kids who you think don't notice anything. Families bonds are built from these traditions. I don't like to mess with them. Just one opinion. Whatever you do – have a wonderful holiday! Kim
Best Compliments from Guests
This reminds me that because many of us are so into cooking, that we ARE the experts to lots of our friends/family/co-workers and that OUR compliments are taken very much to heart. I am simply a good home cook - but to lots of people I know, I am a 'gourmet cook'. When I give them a compliment and ask for a recipe, some of them just glow! We can give this same feeling that this 14 year old novice cook had!
