Jeffries Milford CT

I don't know being "satisfied" doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement. At there years ago and was so surprised by the high, New York prices. I ordered the pasta marinara because I was being treated and it was the cheapest entree. Yuk, metallic, inedible. Others at the table seemed pleased but I would spend my money elsewhere. Wish I could recommend a place downtown. I like Bistro Basque, but it is just too loud, can't talk there. The food is quite good for Milford, David the owner knows what he is doing. But the food never changes and is starting to feel a bit stale to me after eating there many times. You can get a decent falafel at Olive Tree. It's too bad that space is empty across from the harbor that was a bakery kind of place with a patio. Great space, but looks like a cheap cafeteria.

Shopsin's

I will never understand how people can put up with abusive behavior at Shopsins for some tasty but certainly not great food. I ate there years ago and vowed not to return. It was at the Bedford st place. After getting screamed at because there were 5 of us, one, a well known food critic and gracious man left so we could eat. We looked at the all the toys around us on the shelves and when we took one down it was covered with grease and dust. The waitress was smoking and then took a bite of a fried egg sandwich that exploded all over her plate and beyond. I have never felt so close to loosing my appetite and I don't mind walking through Chinatown in the middle of summer. The food was ok, some rather tasty, some just odd. The best thing was that the plates were clean and warm. Having to sit there and listen to this man swear up and down and have such contempt for his customers, I silently said to Mr. Shopsin, "yea? well f you too!.

Ed's Lobster Bar Annex - First Impressions

Had the fried clams at the original place a few years ago. As I was eating them I thought how odd they have no flavor. And then I noticed that the texture of the clams was so mushy. When I cut one open it was completely filled with cornmeal! Talk about purging, they went overboard on that. Never wanted to return.

Ships Restaurant Westport, CT (back in the day)....

Sorry, I know this is somewhat unrelated but anyone remember The Clam Box? I worked there a gazillion years ago, granted in it's waning years. But they had the most extensive list of fish i had and have ever seen At least 10 to 15 different varieties daily.

August in Wellfleet MA ...breakfast, lunch, dinner, ice cream

We always go to Moby Dick's. We love the atmosphere and the husband and wife owner are always there helping out and chatting. It's byob so that is fantastic and the staff is ready to give you ice buckets and glasses for your beer and wine. I usually get the fried filet of scrod, so simple and perfectly done. Didn't know about the salad wedge, will definitely try next time.

Pho Mai Bridgeport CT - Opinions?

I like the place. Haven't been in a while when I ate there last there was a team of women in the kitchen cooking up a storm. The woman who runs the place is very nice. People at the other table order banh mi, and were raving about them. I never order banh mi as I make better ones at home. I like the food, the fried springrolls were fine. A stir fry of seafood with rice noodles was good, lots of very nice shrimp and squid in a bland sauce. The pho is ok. It is a huge bowl of noodles in a sweet, light broth and again, the large shrimp served with it were great. There are 2 types of fish cakes in the pho, tasty but I never was a fish cake fan. I go there once in a while, when I don't mind making the trek from Milford. Tho it is not great by any means, I am glad it is there. I wish there was a great Vietnamese place in the area, but none that I know about. I have co authored a Vietnamese cookbook and been over there twice, so I make it at home.

Mission Chinese Food

I tried some that a friend brought in from dinner the night before. The lamb dumplings were delish, the wrapper was firm and the filling lamby and rich with great peanuts. There was a rice cake dish that was tasty. I love their chewy texture it was very spicy and salty. It had gobs of very very smokey bacon or pork belly. The pepper leaf soup was so bitter and astringent that I couldn't eat it. There was a funky dish with sliced medium rare kidneys that I couldn't get around. The green bean dish was pleasant with ground pork and soy, understated compared to other dishes. Overall the dishes were very aggressively seasoned and salted. Very unusual combinations with lots of nice vegetables used like baby turnips, broccoli rabe, radishes etc.
Dill is used in some Asian cuisines, it is common in Northern Vietnam, China and Tibet.

Where can I find the best soup dumplings in Manhattan???

I agree with AubWah, Shanghai Cafe rules. I also love their tofu skin "noodles" with stir fried pork and edamame.

Minetta Tavern - Photography Now Banned

I don't understand how on earth this turned into constitutional rights. As more people become ignorant of manners and common courtesies because of all their precious personal gadgets, they seem to think they are entitled to act rudely in public. Cameras are not allowed in theaters and concerts with good reason. I don't want anyone to be flashing their camera around the a restaurant where I am dining. It is intrusive and annoying, never mind crass. Restaurants have a right to establish their own rules be it dress, conduct, payment or otherwise.

Best vegetarian crab cakes

What is the point of vegetarian crab cake? Especially if it tastes so much like crab I would be dubious about the content.

The Lazy Frog, Morris, CT, disappointing

I've seen its' progress as I drive up that way every other weekend. It is a brand new building, lots of money went into it. The parking lot is always full when i drive by on Sundays. I don't get the name and the hours are odd closing at 7 pm. Doesn't look appealing to me, corny.

How long is the wait at Keste pizza?

Not worth any wait in my opinion. Soggy crust way too much cheese on top. They should cook it longer that 3 minutes.

That's too bad about your experience at WSG. I have had their frites and they were terrific. They also have the absolute best Soupe de Poisson with Rouille. This is the real deal, very labor intensive and divine. Rich with whole fish and shellfish cooked together into an intense thick soup, served with a homemade mayo like rouille. You cannot get this anywhere and I call first to make sure they have it. Their sandwiches are fabulous and the wine list far superior to other places. I just love it especially on a beautiful day sitting outside in front.

Orso or DB Bistro for dinner

DB is terribly expensive and not worth it to me. A bit stuffy and seems to attract a more well dressed crowd. Haven't been to Orso in years but I liked back then, and it is really part of the theater scene with a long history.

Ramps Harvesting [split from Manhattan]

(Note: This thread was split from the Manhattan board: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/8412... -- The Chowhound Team)

How long will it be before ramps are wiped out? There has to be some sort of regulation going on here. Now UnWholly Foods have frozen ramps. Canada has put a hold on ramp harvesting because of dwindling growth. What is really upsetting is when I am served badly prepared, dried out, grill-burnt leathery specimens at trendy restaurants. Had inedible strings of them on a pizza at Tarry Lodge and it was so depressing. I know of many places to find ramps, but I would never tell anyone and if I do take some, it is very few. Need to leave some so there is something to grow for next year.

Walk down the block and have a world class lunch at West St. Grill. Not cheap but one of the best in the Northeast.

Anyone else get lunch from Kim's Aunt on 46th?

It is a filling sandwich, agree the bread is too soft and squishy and the fish is not high quality. I'm not sure I would spend my money there after 1 try.

Foodie driving through CT....what are some MUST try's ??

We used to go to Jimmie's when you could eat in the parking lot. The large, scary man that took your order and could flip about 20 hot dogs at a time. He was so intense and fast and if you didn't know what you wanted he didn't wait. He worked like the wind, he was truly, awesome.

Foodie driving through CT....what are some MUST try's ??

I grew up in Milford and spent part of my youth at the Seas. When I tried it much later on I found the food on par with most sports bars. And not only were there rowdy young drinkers at the bar but I swear some of the same old drinkers too. Now there is going to be a Mustang Sally's replacing Daniel St. With Archie Moore's, SBC, Stonebridge and the Seas and the latest opening, downtown Milford is living up to its' reputation as a party bar town. I would avoid it on Friday and Saturday nights, lots of drunk drivers.

Foodie driving through CT....what are some MUST try's ??

Sorry but I could not recommend Seven Seas or Scribners in Milford. I was served a rotten piece of fish at the Seas and the bar crowd is low life. Scribners hasn't been good in so many years. Way overpriced and poorly executed dishes. Thinly sliced, dried out swordfish, broken hollandaise, that was it for me.

Where has all the Fresh Fish Gone?

Actually I believe it is called a polyphosphate dip. Another treatment is called sodium tripolyphosphate. Apparently deemed legal and safe by the government. Maybe so but it ruins the flavor and texture of fish. When I bought those flounder filets, and they did have a strange pink color, they wouldn't cook through! You know how quickly a sole or flounder filet cooks, and I am a professional chef. But when I tried broiling these from an Italian recipe I had great success with previously, the fish only got more firm, like cardboard and kept this disturbing translucence. It was like a hard salt fish.

Where has all the Fresh Fish Gone?

I don't think Central Fish is still there. I bought fish at Sea Breeze on the same block. They are great for whole fish and live blue crabs. Some filets are good, but I bought the cheap flounder and it was treated. Am I the only one who notices that the routine cod, sole, flounder and haddock are treated with this type of saline- phosphate mixture that makes the fish look shiny and I guess keeps it fresh. But it gives the fish a nasty, slippery feel and off taste? Shrimp too are being treated and give off a terrible taste. I ruined a nice fish stock I was making by adding shrimp shells I bought from Wild Edibles, of all places. Medium shrimp from Panama. I should have known better but I figured that place would not resort to that. I had to throw out the shrimp. I once bought head on shrimp in Chinatown with the same results. Supermarket fish too. Just because it says wild or fresh doesn't mean untreated. I did research this.
