Mid-Cities Indian...finally
I'm afraid that Kusum isn't long for business...the place was pretty much empty when I went in...thus, I don't see how they can make it, long term...what shame.
Lunch spots in the midcities (HEB)?
You pretty much hit all the decent places in HEB. I live in Hurst and have for a while. I'll throw in a few of our favorites. M.K's Sushi, near Jason's, Dukes Roadhouse, etc in the shopping center at Central and Airport Freeway is very good. There is a small Lebanese place on Brown Trail, just North of Harwood, just past Soprano's Pizza. Both are good and reasonable. For Indian, try Masai Masai on North Main, in Euless. Just across from North Main BBQ. Alvarado's Mexican, 5000 Davis Blvd, NRH has killer Burritos.
All these should keep you busy for a while.
Main St. Chop & Seafood House
We visited the Main Street Chop & Seafood House, in Colleyville, last night. It's in the old location of the defunct 62 Main Restaurant, another high end failure for Colleyville.
The place wasn't all that busy, but is was a Thursday evening. There were way more people at the bar then eating in the restaurant.
We started with cocktails, they have a very extensive and expensive wine list, with the top bottle running over $160. Wine by the glass is good, but also a bit expensive. I had a $13 Zinfandel, which was quite good, after a nicely done martini.
For salads, there were 3 Caesar Salad, which were good, with excellent chunks of parmesan cheese and one order of lobster bisque, which was also good.
My spouse ordered the bone-in rib eye, medium rare. ($38) I was cooked exactly like she ordered it and the taste was very good. I ordered grilled swordfish ($30), which came with red potatoes and asparagus. The fish was properly cooked and had a nice sauce with it. Others at the table ordered Sea Bass, which was very good (also $30ish), the final entree was the Tilapia, which was reported to be excellent.
For desert, chocolate cake and coffee was ordered. I'm not much of a fan of chocolate, but the cake was decadent.
Ok, so will we be back? I doubt it. Oh the food was very good, properly cooked, etc. I like to go out, but $278 + tip for 4 people is a bit much. I wish them well, but I doubt Colleyville will support THAT much of a high end restaurant.
72 oz. steak challenge - I need advise
I used to live in Amarillo, but never went there...being a grad student, I was broke...since then, I've been through there a couple of times and watched the fools try to big steak...LOL. Fools they are. I do think the food is fine, or I wouldn't go back. What is better, is the people watching..all the tourists coming in and ooogling all the Texas stuff. Heck, it's better than SOB (South of the Border) and Big Texan doesn't have the thousand miles of signs along I-95.
Mid-Cities Indian...finally
Masala was probably a mixture of Paki & Indio tastes, with a leaning toward Indian. Since the two countries share a long common border, it stands to reason some commonality in the food...and my ignorance on the geographical bases of either cuisine compounds the problem...(meaning I wouldn't know a Northern Indian dish from a Southern one) I have had dishes from way far North India and a bit across the border in to Tibet...Tibetan food is kind of a Chinese food with a lot of yogurt. LOL.
5 Best Stops on a TX/Southwest Roadtrip?
Perfect...you have to go through Marathon on your way from Ft. Stockton down to the Big Bend National Park. Stay in Marathon. It's 500X better than anything you will find in the Park.
5 Best Stops on a TX/Southwest Roadtrip?
The restaurant and bar at the Gage Hotel in Marathon. Stay at the Gage because it's old and been renovated. (ignore the main east/west Union Pacific line across the street) Drink at the White Buffalo Bar because they have 40-50 different tequilas, served with fresh lime juice and eat in the restaurant (Cafe Cenzio) because the Exec Chef (Paul Petersen) used to run a small restaurant and catering service in Buda, called The Best Little Bistro in Texas.

5 Best Stops on a TX/Southwest Roadtrip?
The restaurant and bar at the Gage Hotel in Marathon, Tx, is very very good. The Exec Chef used to live in the Austin area and ran a little place in Buda called The Best Little Bistro in Texas (or something like that). They pulled up stakes and moved to Marathon. The Bar has about 40-50 different kinds of tequila and they serve it with freshly squeezed lime juice...- wonderful.
Mid-Cities Indian...finally
Ok, finally made to Masala Masala in Euless, for the lunch buffet. Nice, clean, open setting, very friendly staff. The lunch buffet had 20+ items on it, nicely labled and they mentioned that nothing was extremely hot (except a green chili sauce that was labeled HOT and it was). I stuffed my face on most everything and found it very good. I'm no Indian expert, but I liked all of the flavors, with nothing being overly salted as I had found in the Bedford place. Great fresh bread - one was a Naan and the other, I don't remember what it was called. Both were very good. The buffet is reasonable - $7.99. The total bill was $10.15 with tax and iced tea. I definite keeper.
Reccomendations for Ft. Worth?
Guess I've lived in FTW too long and still remember when Joe T's was busted for serving stuff that shouldn't have been in the Tacos and bad kitchen hygiene. There is better Tex-Mex around. Mi Cocina is way over priced for what you get, but it you are into seeing and being seen, it's a place. Reata's is probably going down hill since Grady Spears left (I think). You might try the Love Shack, in the Yards. H3 should have been better...and there are better places around for steak.
Haven't been to Mercury Chophouse, but I do know Chris Ward, somewhat personally. If he's behind the kitchen, it is going to be great and first class...might not be the cheapest, but first class.
A bit out of downtown is the Flying Fish Restaurant on Montgomery. Killer seafood and oysters.
Kincaid's on Camp Bowie, is still very good. The old grocery store ambiance helps a lot. It's been there a long time and the food is good. Much better than Southlake. For Burgers, don't forget Fred's, off of W 7th. Kinda a dive, but really good food. Was featured in the FoodNetwork show, Diners, Drive-Inns and Dives...certainly qualifies as a Dive...LOL.
Oh, the Paris Coffee Shop has GREAT breakfasts. Go there if you get a chance.
Best Breakfast in Dallas?
Raven's Grille, Euless, is probably our favorite and has a wonderful following. They have a great Sunday brunch, but we usually use the regular menu. You can order a Bloody Mary, etc, after 10:30 on Sunday...LOL.
Mid-Cities Indian...finally
Ok, found Masala Masala and will give it a go. It got an entry in Pegasus, another DFW foodie blog. Thanks for the tip.
Dim Sum in Arlington
Dim sum was Sunday, Indian was Monday...the Italian place was Friday night.. Kinda on a run of new places.
Mid-Cities Indian...finally
The place in Euless was more of a convenience type store with a Pakistani menu, not Indian. (If I have the same place) This the kind of place I referenced as a convenience store...there is another similar place on Rufe Snow at Mid Cities (North Richland Hills). I might try it because it's Indian. I guess I need to also break done and try Paki food...and see how it's different from Indian food.
Tom & Bingo's BBQ - Lubbock
I used to eat at T&B's when I was a kid growing up in Lubbock...waaaay back in the 50's. , so it's a Lubbock institution for sure.
They used to have a location across the street from Lubbock High School. The sliced beef sandwiches were very very good. Glad to hear they are still there are doing well. I forget about them when I get back to visit Lubbock.
Mid-Cities Indian...finally
Finally found a real restaurant, that serves Indian food which is NOT part convenience store, etc...like so many of the other "Indian" restaurants are in the Mid-Cities area. This place just opened and I found it by doing a Google search. Here's the 411:
KUSUM
1725 Airport Freeway
Bedford, Tx
just down a bit from the HD Dealer (a major landmark).
I had the lunch buffet today. Nice spread, 17 items offered. All were good and pretty standard for Indian buffets I've sampled in the past couple of years. All were very tasty, and very fresh. (I can't name what I was eating, but I know it when I see it and I'll pretty much eat anything that isn't moving and won't eat me first!!!)
Service was good, but the place wasn't busy. A couple of the entrees were overly salted, but still tasted fine. I don't think I'm experienced over salting in the other Indian restaurants I've tried in the DFW area (Irving, Plano and North Dallas). Reasonably priced at $8.99.
If are into Indian, give this place a try. It was a hoot watching Indian music videos while eating...Bollywood Hip Hop was new to me...LOL.
David
Hurst, Tx
ever in search for that new, individual restaurant.
Dim Sum in Arlington
I finally found an open, Dim Sum restaurant in the Mid-Cities, Arlington area. The FTW Star Telegram had an entry for ABC Seafood, but no reviews. Not wanting to drive all the way over to Greenville Ave, in Richardson for Dim Sum, thought I'd venture over to ABC.
The place is at the corner of Tx360 and E. Arkansas Lane, way back in the South East corner of a strip center with mainly ethic stores. The interior is, what I would call, a typically vast Chinese Restaurant with lot's of tables, some with the turntable in the middle for sharing dishes. On Sunday morning, there were about 4-5 carts being pushed around containing Dim Sum. I made the mistake of stocking up from the first cart and not waiting for the pastry cart with some great look shrimp balls, to come by. The carts descend on your table very quickly, so be prepared once you tell the door person you want Dim Sum...LOL.
Anyway, tried several kinds of dumplings and green tea. I passed on the chicken feet... :-) All very well prepared (don't ask what they were, because I don't know the names, I can just recognize them when I see them...I lived in Hong Kong for about a year and came to love Cantonese Dim Sum, but don't remember much of the language) and they all tasted great. Very filling. The "tally" sheet laid on the table...printed almost 100% in Chinese with a small stamp placed in the box to indicate that was the dish you had taken. Each entree had 3 pieces of Dim Sum, so don't over order. 5-6 entrees are more than enough for 2 hungry "round eyes".
There was only one other "round eye" in the place and she was married to an Asian. Lot's of full tables of happy people stuffing their faces with Dim Sum...all using chop sticks...I didn't see a fork in the place.
I will certainly be headed back to ABC when my Dim Sum quotient needs refilling. It was all very good, service was outstanding and prices not too bad considering how good it was. Here's the complete information:
ABC Seafood
2420 E. Arkansas Lane
Arlington, Tx
Google ABC Seafood Arlington, Tx for the map, phone number, etc.
Happy Eating.

Hurst, Tx
next up, a new Indian place in BEDFORD...yipee.
Stephan Pyles
Nice reviews...think I'll give the place a big miss. It looks WAY too expensive for my hard earned, retirement dollars.
Mid-Cities Pizza - a new one
We visited Soprano's Pizza & Pasta, in Bedford, on Friday night. I was originally attracted by the buy one get one free coupon I got it the mail. After sitting down, I decided I wanted to try the Pizza, since it was advertised as "New York Style" (and what self abiding pizza joint wouldn't advertise NYC pizza?) I ordered my usual - pepperoni, sausage, mushroom and black olive. It came out with a really nice, crisp crust on both top and bottom, just the right amount of meat oils still sloshing around on the top and a sauce that was very good. I lived in Mid-Town NYC for over a year and found there was no pizza better, anyplace...well Soprano's comes really close to the real thing (IMHO). Give it a try. BYOB (nice).
Soprano's Pizza & Pasta
2816 Brown Trail
Bedford, Texas
and NO, I dont' work there or have a financial interest in the place. I just like to see the little guys make a big dent in Domino's, Pappa John's and Pizza Hut's corporate business.
Indian - Mid-Cites or Arlington
Tried the Buffet at Pasand today. Very good. Lot's to choose from. I know the food when I see it, and can't particularly call it by name...I'll have to try the Southlake place. I know where that Kroger is.
Marfa TX - Fall 2008 update
You should have gone to the Gage Hotel in Marathon. Great, old hotel, super bar with many tequilias and awecome restaurant.
[DFW] Looking for the perfect "Catfish Joint"
Flying Fish, I-30, south on Montgomery. Big Menu, Good Food. Owned by the folks that run the Flying Saucer and 8.0 in Ft Worth (and Dallas, I'm told).
http://www.flyingfishinthe.net/
Indian - Mid-Cites or Arlington
Looking for good Indian food. Don't want to drive to Arlington. The only place I found on CitySearch (Star Telegram is useless) was called Indian Grill and I think it's closed.
Thanks.
Best seafood in Port "A" and Rockport?
Crab-N, over near Aransas Pass, right on Tx 35 is very good, nice surroundings, sood service and right on the water. For a more fried, fried and fried dinner, the Big Fisherman, on Tx 188, off of Tx 35 is large with a large menu and good food (not gourmet, but good anyway).
German food near DFW
Any one know where we can get some good potato dumplings? Most german food places serve bread dumplings, which aren't as good.
As for Mid-Cities German, there is a German bakery and restaurant on South I-20 about where it splits off to head towards Arlington. My wife is 2nd generation German and we've been there a couple of time. The place in Southlake is good if you cook it yourself.
DFW: Best Caesar Salad?
Ok, who has the best Caesar Salad in DFW? Not a bottled dressing, but one with real cottled egg and anchovies...preferably made right at table side, like they do at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco...(ah, be still my pounding heart to return to the City by the Bay for some wonderful food...)
OK, DFW Foodies...let's hear it.
Greenwood's?
My daughter tells me there is a restaurant written up in Texas Monthly called Greenwood's...in the TCU area and is a german place.
Greenwood’s
The TCU neighborhood has discovered this new German spot. Luckily for the young (in year or at heart), monster meals like the bratwurst plate come in child and senior portions. Pan-fried pork loin is served with fried potatoes and a side salad. The good food and pleasant, casual surrounding cinched a return visit. Beer & wine. 3522 Bluebonnet Circle, yada, yada, yada
No reference here or Guidlive.
What's the 411 on this place??
Grapevine/Westlake TX-Good Eats??
For more upscale, try The Classic Cafe, in Roanoak. Just north of Babe's on Main Street. Nice bar, good southwestern food. Been there several years.
Eats in Lubbock
Try Jazz on 19th, just east of the Hospital complex. Cajun and pretty good. Been there a LONG time, which is good for Lubbock.
Completely off the food (Tex-Mex) topic - try Pete's Drive Inns...especially the Pastrami sandwichs. don't go looking for an east coast version, but something completely unique and very good. Pete's are on Ave Q about 10th and on East 34th, East of I-27. Both have been around a LONG time.
Mexican food places come and go quickly.
