Jeni's ice cream, now in Bristol Farms, Silverlake

Yes to both--yesterday found me at Bulgarini, and truly, on my weekly to-do list, is "visit Famous Frank's for peanut butter and chocolate ice cream."

I probably won't be making Jeni's a habit, but it's still really good.

Good grief! I meant Gelson's--I've edited my op.

Jeni's ice cream, now in Bristol Farms, Silverlake

Gelson's in Silverlake has pints of Jeni's ice cream (10.99 EACH).

I remember seeing

Brambleberry Crisp
Dark Chocolate
Brown Butter Almond Brittle
Salty Caramel
Whiskey & Pecans

I don't know if this is news to anyone else, but it was a pleasant (and indulgent) way to spend my Sunday afternoon.

Early solo dinner downtown?

Nick N Stef's--they have a nice happy hour menu that's served in the bar.

Shin Sen Gumi--my favorite Ramen place in Little Tokyo. In the same minimall as Yogurtland.

Watching the Oscars in Pasadena

Mc Michael,

The link from that event is dated 2007. On the Alex's home page, the only event listed for Sunday, February 26, is the LA Chamber Orchestra matinee performance.

Century City mall food court

I've been to that Coral Tree Express a couple of times. Since I'm usually trying to hustle along and make a movie, the slooow service (the amount of time it takes to get the food) is pretty frustrating.

Cocktails in the SFV?

I'm looking for a place that serves thoughtful, well made cocktails in the SFV.

Ideally, there'd be good food, but I'm willing to eat pretzels that I smuggle in my purse, to have drinks made with fresh juices, topshelf liquor, and an attentive bartender.

A co-worker suggested Firefly in Studio City, but I don't particularly remember their drinks.

Any ideas?

Dim Sum for someone with shellfish allergies - do able?

That's me!

I can't eat shrimp, lobster, scallops, etc. At times I'm more sensitive than others--probably due to whatever other allergens I've been exposed to and amount of drink I've had. That's when I notice a mild case of the hives after having dishes with fish or oyster sauce. Nothing that a pill or two of Benydryl or Zyrtec can't knock out.

When I go out to the SGV, I usually find it worth my while to smile and make conversation with the table manager, usually that's the person who can speak the best English. I ask him to make a note on our table ticket that the woman with glasses (or whatever color top I'm wearing) can't eat shellfish, but can eat everything else.

Having that written note for the cart-pushers really helps out.

hatch chiles ?

I saw them for the first time at today's Atwater Village farmer's market. I believe it was in the South Central farmer's stall--$4/bag.

Pumpkin Ravioli? Where's your favorite served up at?

A dear friend swears by the offering at Il Moro.

Where to buy Wine?

I'm a regular at Topline, due to proximity and this board. But for the OP, it's no where near Laguna Beach. I don't think many things in life are worth that drive...

Places to go, with regular Los Angeles visitors

Thanks everyone for the ideas.

I haven't been to Park's, and don't think we've taken these visitors to KTown. Langer's is an old favorite--and with their lunch crowd hours, I don't know if we'll be able to stop over there after work.

I haven't been to Rivera, Wood Spoon, or Wurstkuche yet--so I'm looking forward to it!

Places to go, with regular Los Angeles visitors

I have two friends coming to visit in two weeks. They've come to LA many times before (from Chicago) and I'm trying to think of where to take them. Here is what I'm trying to work through:

They will be attending the E3, held at the Convention Center. I work in DTLA and take public transport, and can meet up with them after 5:00. They will be divided in their own cars, and are not against hopping on a DASH bus. There might be parties they are invited to--so I'm trying to think of places we can stop and have a drink or a bite, before trooping to the venue. For this point, I'd like to not have to move the car.

For days when they are not tethered to the Convention Center area--we are based in Glendale, and have mutual friends in Highland Park and Los Feliz. I would love to try and think of low and moderately priced restaurants to take them. One of our visitors particularly likes micro beers--I think I've already taken them to The York, and was hoping for gentle pointers in another direction.

And finally, a note about atmosphere--we're all in our late 30s and early 40s. I'd like to go someplace with good food, good drink, and a little bit of atmosphere.

Any and all suggestions welcome!

We haven't been back.

I just looked at their website, the cannelloni is off the menu.

Los Angeles Eating Itinerary

I love Donut Man. Love it.

It's on the way to: no where.

If OP wants more centrally located donuts, how about Bob's Donuts at the Original Farmer's Market on 3rd and Fairfax? Go on a weekday morning, and eat with the locals.

Looking for the new Ben & Jerry's flavors --any sightings?

Ben and Jerry's website has a flavor locator. If you can't find it near your home, maybe there's one around your workplace?

Also, it looks like Clusterfluff is only available in the scoop shops.

great Fried Chicken, southern or american style...

Yeah, I had and enjoyed the Lazy Ox version on a Tuesday. (It was my birthday, that's the only reason I can date it so specifically.)

Disney Concert Hall-Dinner Rec?

I like the happy hour at Lazy Ox. The prices are good, and it might be walkable, depending on footwear and weather.

Food (or late night) near Music Box

I like to go to Palms Thai. They're open late, so you can stay for all the encores, and they serve beer and spicy food. It's a pretty loud atmosphere, so if you're excited about the show, you won't feel weird semi-yelling.

Capri Eagle Rock-post Kitchen Nightmares

My husband and I ate there last Friday. The restaurant was mostly full, but we were able to sit down right away.

Regarding the renovation: I also miss the funky old atmosphere. I can see why they would rearrange the seating chart, they can now seat many more diners. I've never seen Kitchen Nightmares or eaten at Ramsey establishment, but I've got to say I found the Capri's new decor slightly dated, like circa 2003.

I have to say, our experience was negative enough, that we'll never be back. The service was terrible. Yes, the restaurant was mostly full, but my water and my husband's soda never got refilled. Once we got our server's attention, she would grab one (never both!) of the glasses, refill it, and then dash on her way. In addition to the water and the soda, we ordered pizza dough ties and the chicken with potatoes, and a lasagna. (I wanted a salad, my husband did not. Our waitress explained that salads are now served bigger, and pointed out a sleigh type dish at the neighboring table. So, no to the dinner salad, then...)

At the 40 minute mark we still had not received our appetizers. Again, we managed to find our server and ask if there was a problem with our order. She said "They haven't been dropped off yet?" And then sped on her way. Ten minutes later she was back, and told us that the kitchen had messed up, but our appetizers and mains were just about to come along. We cancelled the appetizer order, to her surprise. As we waited for our dinners we watched other diners gently refuse misdirected food, and one of the neighboring tables complain they felt they were getting rushed out.

I didn't care for my chicken dish. The chicken was cooked with rosemary in olive oil, with some boiled fingerling potatoes. The whole effect was very yellow, with no crispy bits. My husband ate most of his lasagna, but lamented the end of the cannelloni from the old menu. Our drinks continued to be mostly empty throughout our meal.

We had a wait for our bill, our waitress reappeared long enough to tell us about the kitchen staff being short. (Don't care!) We paid and made our escape.

Peoria, Illinois

I'm not the original poster, but here are my thoughts on my visit this fall:

I went to Peoria in the beginning of the fall. I was visiting family and here's some of what we ate:

Emack & Bolio's
4534 North Prospect Road
Peoria Heights, IL 61616
http://www.emackandbolios.com/
Despite a lifetime of worshipping the dairy arts, this is the first time I've come across this particular chain. My ice cream was good, but too rich. (Completely eater error, I ordered chocolate mousse ice cream, but my brain was convinced it was going to be moose track ice cream.)

Paparazzi
4315 Voss Street
Peoria Heights, IL 61616
http://www.paparazzipeoriaheights.com/
I've been to Paparazzi's several times over the years. This was the first visit where, while I had a nice meal, I was aware of my desire for a freshened menu. We shared the app of tomato and onion antipasto with gorgonzola cheese, for my main I had the veal piccata, and dessert was the cannoli. We drank the wine on the table--a red with a black labrador on it. I enjoyed it. Almost two months after the meal, and I think the only thing I would re-order was the appetizer. I know that sounds like faint praise; I will absolutely return to this restaurant.

Sky Harbor Steakhouse
1321 North Park Road
West Peoria, IL 61604
http://www.skyharborsteakhouse.com/
This is the place that really made me think I was back in Peoria. To start, the restaurant's name is "Sky Harbor", and yet is at the bottom of a gentle hill, with a view of exactly: nothing. It's a big place, half (or more?) devoted to the restaurant. (Advisory--my relatives refuse to eat there.) The other half is a bar, with a piano, dim lights, and clientele of a certain gentle age. I was there on a Saturday night, so I got to listen to the jazz pianist Jimmy Binkley, and sip on an extremely affordable gin and tonic. If you find yourself in the area on a Wednesday or Saturday night, I highly recommend popping over after dinner elsewhere for the nightcap of your favorite drink, and some lovely music. The lighting is dim, the booths are forgiving, and I wish my notes were better, because I was completely and utterly enchanted.

Seven on Prospect
4609 North Prospect
Peoria Heights, IL 61616
http://www.7onprospect.com/index.htm
This is one of the nicer restaurants in Peoria Heights. I've been a few times, and I find myself looking forward to returning. For our party of three we shared an appetizer order of mussels, sweet potato fries, lamb lollipops, and sauteed mushrooms, bread, and then two mains of rainbow trout with quinoa and spinach. Everything was quite good, with the lamb and sweet potatos standing out in my memory. Dessert was a trio of creme brulees--classic, smores, and something chocolate and boozy.

I hope if you find yourself in Peoria, you're able to seek out some good food. I grew up in Peoria, and then lived in Chicago for years before moving to Los Angeles. This is a wind up of saying--yes--the places I've listed might not be the closest to where you're staying and working, but the traffic is light, parking is abundant and cheap, and getting off the beaten path is always worthwhile.

Dinner on Friday between Glendale and Los Feliz

Thanks one and all for all your recommendations and comments!

As I was reading and thinking about our evening--my friend decided where to eat without me. (!!!)

We went to Il Capriccio. Friday night was fairly warm, but we ate inside (all of the outdoor table space was taken). Our food was good, but not memorable.

I had the spinach ravioli, she had the eggplant parm. Eh.

Dinner on Friday between Glendale and Los Feliz

Hello all,

I'm having dinner with an old friend Friday night around 8. I'd like

Good food
Liquor license
Moderately priced
Happening, but not sooo loud that we can't catch up
Must have veg friendly options (friend eats no meat, fish, or fowl)

Here are my thoughts

House of Pie--kind of icky
Mexico City--not great food, and too loud
Alegria--good food, no booze

I've lived in Glendale forever, she's new to Los Feliz, so I'd love to suggest someplace fantastico! I'd love to hear any and all suggestions--bonus for parking suggestions!

Where to go for Chinese on Christmas?

Here's a topic about Christmas time dim sum from December 2009.

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/675409?tag=boards;topic-675409

The restaurant I went to had little to no traditional ambiance. (J & J) It was busy--my husband and I ate at a communal table, and got to look and drool over other parties orders.

Eagle Rock lunch places?

Yeah, I've been there twice in two weeks, but for dinner. Their "hot" makes me sweat, and my lips tingle in the best way! I'm so-so on their fries, and wish they had celery or carrots, though.

Blood Orange... Anything! What's Good?

I just had the blood orange chip gelato at Gelato Bar, in Studio City. Verrry very tasty!

I want pie...mmmm, pie..in Glendale, Atwater, Eagle Rock, or thereabouts

This time of year? At P n B go for the fresh peach or fresh strawberry. Or the ollaieberry. Sooo good!

Is Porto's Glendale less insane than Porto's Burbank on Saturdays?

Regarding the Glendale location, there's a covered public parking lot next to Billy's Deli, which is less than a block from Porto's. The first 90 minutes are free.

This is infinitely better than the metered public lot behind the bakery.
