So, I'm a Boston 'hound, our board here created some "best/must try/authentic" threads...

True : GP does not disappoint with charm-

and side note of weird things I know... The Voliet Crown district was named because before the days of pollution and big buildings.. at sunset the pollen and dust in the air would create a beautiful violet crown over the city like our own Aurora Bourelies ...most beautiful when the mountain laurels bloom

I prefer Jack ALlens, Swifts, or Yellow jacket( no buffet) or dare I say Roaring fork

FSM is a bit over rated imho.. and though Green pastures is indeed lovely it kind of felt like like paying 40.00 dollars to eat at church potluck for brunch..I would save them for regular dining.

Kid-friendly and nut-free Italian dish that tastes good at room temp?

then perhaps a happy medium would be those tiny mozzarella balls in the plastic container that Cos-co has... floating in olive oil... placed on a platter with some basil and tomatoes and have the kids make tiny snack bites on flag tooth picks

Cookbooks for Young Cooks

I took my first class when I was 3 and staged in my first pro kitchen at 13-
I loved ALton Browns when I was that age because it taught it me the science behind cooking and how to develop my own recipes...
I also loved the book What Einstein Told His Cook: Kitchen Science Explained.. COrniela Guest has a beautiful book which is vegan but the book is just lovely... I also loved my Ina Garten books.

But- this is where their education begins. Events like this should have a certain amount dignity and respect. Geeze why dont you all just zap some pizza rolls in the microwave? Children are able to grasp and learn a lot more than you give them credit for.

Etiquette question (re: BYO and food) when hosting a birthday party?

My parental unit went to one of these it was set in San Francisco and they were asked to dress up and asked to bring a dish representing their character. My mom was "free spirit" trust fund baby" so she brought a vegetarian dish.. dad was an Asian detective he brought egg rolls(not horridly creative but...)

A tragedy. My daughter threw away...

My Grandfather set my grandmothers Tupperware measure bowl on fire while he bbqed... we were all horrified... as she had made pancakes in it every weekend from as long my mom and everyone could remember...Imagine our delight when Christmas morning came and she unwrapped one exactly like it! You got to love Santa! ( and an ebay search of vintage Tupperware)

Oyster knife and glove issue

I have never used a glove.. I have a french oyster knife that has ,almost for lack of better term,a bell guard on it which I have been using since I was six and never have had a problem

I can only vouch for Maria's on Sunday morning for "hippy church"
I am not BBQ gal- But do love LAbbq and find it every bit as tasty as the famous Franklins....but again the experience of waiting in the line is part of the DIsneyworld feel..however if you have car.. there are better places in the hills..
I would put Uchiko on you list and Swifts on your list.. if you are going to head to Hudsons you can go in a bit further and hit Noble Sandwich for lunch ( then you would be stuck in a not so interesting part of town till dinner---Oh but wait they have new location too)
If you are coming from Boston I would stick with our Austin only stuff... Not "the best seafood in Austin" type stuff
Take your picture at the famous Greetings from Austin Mural that you see in every film down on first street
Have a Cocktail at Paul Qui's place
Even get a greasy Burger at El Camino( though it is haunted and creepy)
Migas at ciscos (where the men of the capitol have eaten for generations in spite of the uneven floor and rustic no-nonsense decor)
Stand in line at Franklins
Savour the deliciousness of ODD Duck and know quirky stories like FoodTruck really do come true where people loved their food soooo much they invested in a restaurant for these guys
Go to Uchiko- where a white guy dreamed of bringing Sushi to Texas and built an empire
And up a steap flight stairs is an Attic holding culinary delights which would blow white table clothed 100 seat Michelins away

THis is my dont leave town without hitting list

some may disagree--- but I still vote Ciscos as "authentic" for breakfast migas it is my fave

Love Hudsons for game

Love Swifts Attic for Brunch

Love Odd Duck

Love Uchiko

Qui
Barleyswine
LAbbq( though some insist on the Franklin line wait)
Via 313 pizza and drinks at Violet crown ( AUstin vibe)
Gordough( trailer- nothing else like it)

Oh and for a weird experience Sunday morning at Marias Taco Express

Dai Due, Austin, TX

Marinated in a decent texmex flavor but could have used a go with a jaquard before they cooked it and threw it unceremoniously on the plate with five unseasoned potato wedges and two fried/poached hybrid eggs

What would be a complimentary side dish to fried rabbit?

toss some hominy in an herbed cornstarch and saute in a skillet

Pan Sauce/Gravy ideas

when making a sauce with wine the alcohol doesnt burn off.. do if if someone was in recovery could it send them into relapse? or would depend on what that persons triggers were?

Ever make tamales? I would really appreciate some insight.

make sure you have a good pot with a steamer basket... make sure you soak your husks.. Invite some friends over and have a tamale making party... it really is easier with a few more hands than yours... first time I made them myself ... next time I some friends over and we had a blast.

Top Chef Boston – Ep. #11 – 01/14/15 (spoilers)

Gregory is getting the Paul Qui edit... winner of all the quick fires.. all round sweetie...though I realllly his food is not near as interesting as Pauls.. his food is more Carla.. Seriously if I was drinker we could play a drinking game with how many times he says coconut soup or broth.. and I like Carla but she was the chowder queen

Virtu "DISHONEST" Craft

to them a bird in the hand... you were a "reservation" so many reservations get written off as no shows at the end of the night( not that you are one of those-- but they dont know that) A buyout for a private party is a grantee payday... Poor form indeed but it is a business..and that is how they selected to do business.. They should have though been more upfront and said "sorry we will be closed for a private party"

Harvey Girls- could there be a comeback?

So the "what makes a good diner" thread got me thinking about a report I did on The Harvey Girls and the road houses of the early west before trains had dining cars on them. For those who may not know know Harvey girls had a strict code of behaviour and standards( not unlike the early flight attendants)
I was thinking with electric cars becoming so prevalent maybe a new class of road house will pop up with charging stations. I know technology will make it where you can charge your car as fast as fueling it... but wouldnt it be cool if if you had to pull in an sit at counter and eat for an hour while car charged; visit with strangers and relax for a few bit before getting back on the road?
