Lunch near FIU
While I can't recommend any sports bars nearby, I feel obligated to point you across the street for a frita (Cuban burger) at El Rey del las Fritas.
New Pho Downtown Hollywood
Hmm. Everyone was very friendly to me when I was there, and that includes two waiters and the cook who popped out of the kitchen occasionally to check on things.
I agree that the pho was a little light on some cuts--maybe one piece of tendon and tripe each--but I got the small one. Still, I thought it was decent. Maybe I have low pho standards. Or maybe I'm just glad to have a Vietnamese restaurant I can walk to.
Ft. Lauderdale Late Night?
I'm pretty sure the other Japanese tapas place you're referring to is Hiro's Yakko-San, which is great and worth the drive, in my opinion. I've heard good things about Marumi as well.
I know that the bar at Le Tub in Hollywood is open late, but I'm not sure how late the kitchen stays open. That might be an option. If you search this board, you'll find plenty of debate about whether or not they have the best burger in the universe. If they're open, the vibe there would definitely be ideal after being in airports and airplanes all day--lush, dark, on the water, very old-Florida.
New Pho Downtown Hollywood
I had dinner there tonight and thought the pho was decent. I probably paid for small bowl of pho what I would normally expect to pay for a large bowl in other restaurants, but aside from that, I was happy with my meal. They've only been open for a month or so, so maybe you caught them when they were just getting their act together. I plan on trying it again because I really, really want some decent restaurants in downtown Hollywood.
Breakfast Suggestions? - N Miami Beach to Hollywood
Here are websites for the places you asked about. You should be able to find addresses and phone numbers:
http://www.sagebagelanddeli.com/
http://yakko-san.com/ I would suggest this for a birthday dinner.
http://tarks.com/ (Can someone please explain why there's a photo of a bedroom on there?) And I think they would definitely be hospitable to a woman dining solo.
Breakfast Suggestions? - N Miami Beach to Hollywood
Sage for sure. The house-made pastrami at Josh's is insane. I believe they do regular breakfast stuff too. Tark's is great, but divey. I'm not sure if you're into that. You're also not too far from Hiro's Yakko-San, a great Japanese place with lots of seafood. They do sushi/sashimi, but the real reason to go there is all of the izakaya stuff (Japanese tapas). If you search this board, you'll find lots of suggestions for what to order there. Just be careful because there's another restaurant called Hiro nearby and from I hear it's not nearly as good.
Josh's Deli - Surfside
I'm glad to hear that. I really don't see how one could open the doors of a deli without it.
Josh's Deli - Surfside
Indeed. I went today and had a knish, chopped liver, and a pastrami sandwich and all were very good. I wasn't impressed by the pickles, however. They weren't very sour/briney. More sweet than half-sour. The pastrami was killer though, as was the mustard. The only thing I wanted for was Cel-Ray soda.
What's new in Sarasota?
I lived in Sarasota from 2000 to 2006 (NCF 2000-2004). I'll be coming back for a weekend this summer, and I'm wondering what's new and worth checking out if I only have a couple of days. When I lived there, some of my favorites in the area were:
-Yoders for fried chicken and pumpkin cream pie
-Star Fish Co. for fried fish sandwiches
-Panificio for pizza
-Epicure
-Tondero, which then got fancy and became Red (right?)
-Tacos at The Red Barn Flea Market or the Acapulco Tropical supermarket nearby
-The Hob Nob
-Pho Cali
-Derek's
-Beach Bistro
-Hickory Hollow in Ellenton
So, what should I try while I'm in town? I'll probably get up to St. Pete for a day too, so anything new there would be appreciated as well. Thanks.
New NAOE?
Yeah, thanks for following up with more info. I can't say that I'm happy about the location though, as I'm up in Hollywood. I'll still make the trip though.
New NAOE?
I'm wondering if the bento has the "tap-out deal" folded into the price now as well. $85 is a pretty big jump from what it was before, no?
New NAOE?
Yeah, I thought I was misreading it at first, but aside from the part about being able to reserve private parties of eight, it says "Capacity: 8 per seating," right below the seating times. To me, that sounds like the whole place could only seat eight people.
New NAOE?
Out of curiosity, I decided to check in on NAOE's website to see if they'd re-opened in their new spot. The reservations page (http://naoemiami.com/reservations_contacts.htm) says they now only seat eight people at a time, and the menu starts at $85 per person.
Cheen Huaye, Yucatecan in N. Miami - Report
I agree that the sopa de lima is a winner, but also wish they'd avoid the white meat in there. The tamales are also quite good.
I heard a rumor that they might be opening a market/take-out place next door. Has anyone else heard that?
Hanukkah in Miami ~ Where to nosh?!?!!?
I'll agree with everyone else so far about deli and Chinese offerings. There is, however, Roasters n' Toasters in Miami Beach and Sage in Hallandale. The latter is a bit of a hike, especially if you can already get good delicatessen in LA. Still, I think they have the best bagels around. R n' T I've only tried once, but the hot pastrami and Cel-Ray definitely scratched the deli itch.
Someone already mentioned Buena Vista Bistro, and they also have a French deli next door with very good sandwiches and pastries. Also in that area, I'd recommend Harry's Pizza, the new venture from Michael's Genuine.
In my mind, the Design District is close enough to justify driving up to Hiro's Yakko-San, a great Japanese izakaya restaurant in Sunny Isles.
Popular places you just don't get! No National chains please!
Ah, but PRL next door to Mauro's DOES have A/C...
I NEED to eat REAL BBQ in South Florida. Where do I go?
Tom Jenkins in Fort Lauderdale.
Quiet Restaurant in South Beach
I usually find Indomania to be pretty cozy, despite the name.

MOFONGO IN S/W BROWARD
I believe these folks are Dominican, not Puerto Rican, but you might give it a shot and see what you think:

John's Hero King in Hallandale
I went yesterday and thought it was pretty good, although I was surprised that The Godfather didn't come with shredded lettuce. I'll know to ask next time. The broccoli rabe was great. The rice ball with peas and sauce was OK, but I probably wouldn't get it again. The marinara that came with it was good though, so I'd like to go back to try it on a parm sub.
Really, the main draw for me is the bread. Good Italian bread for this area.

Hakkasan Miami Spice Dim Sum Brunch - Fantastic!
I really enjoyed the Spice lunch there too. Can anyone comment on how their regular dim sum lunch compares?
Miami and SoBe - questions about a few restaurants
Point taken. Maybe I was being too critical for an opening night. I just wanted the OP to know that the place has some kinks to work out.
Miami and SoBe - questions about a few restaurants
Funny you should mention the new Chowdown Grill. I went on Friday. I thought the food was decent--I had the duck bao and ramen; my friend had dumplings and hot and sour soup. The service was friendly, but the dishes literally came out of the kitchen one at a time, so that we pretty much had to watch each other eat (aside from some sharing). Kind of frustrating when your order consists of something as simple as two steamed things and two soups. They also brought me yakisoba instead of the ramen soup, but were very apologetic. Would I go back? Probably not, but maybe I'm too easily annoyed by a restaurant with a DJ booth.
I don't mean to take the original post off on a tangent. This is all to say that if the OP has a limited amount of time in Miami, there are probably better options.
Miami and SoBe - questions about a few restaurants
I'm a big fan of Camaronera, not only the fish or shrimp sandwiches, but the fried fish roe and the fried grouper cheeks (ventrecha frita, I think).
I also thought 8oz was just OK, but I'd sooner go to Lost Weekend for a cheesesteak or La Sandwicherie for a pate/camembert sandwich.
I liked Pubbelly, but didn't love it. I feel like a lot of the food here hits the same sort of sweet/savory note over and over. If I was in that neighborhood I'd much rather go to Sardinia, which probably won't require a reservation during the summer. I went a few weeks ago on a Sunday night and there were plenty of tables to be had.
If you want to stay on the beach for more Cuban food, Puerto Sagua is good. Still, I'd go to Camaronera for the seafood.

South East Asian grocer in Miami/F. Lauderdale?
I've had good luck at Thai-An, a grocery store in Hollywood. I just googled it, but the map that it brings up doesn't seem to be correct (unless the place has moved). It's in a plaza on the southwest corner of the intersection of 441/SR7 and Hollywood Boulevard. There are actually two different Asian markets in that plaza, I believe.
Miami's Hidden Gems and Hole in the Walls?
Even though it's gotten lots of press, I'd still suggest La Camaronera in Little Havana.

Pork Cheek in Miami
You might try Laurenzo's, an Italian market/butcher in North Miami Beach.
Dim sum in Miami
I'm certainly not a dim sum expert, but you might try Sang's in North Miami Beach and see what you think. You may have to ask them specifically for a dim sum menu.
where have all the jewish delis gone?
I would also recommend Sage, although I haven't been to any of the other places mentioned, so I can't compare. In response to the question in the subject line of your post, you should check out a book called Save the Deli by David Sax. It seems to answer your question pretty well, and touches specifically on the history of deli in Florida. http://www.savethedeli.com/
