21st birthday dinner - fun, good food, not stuffy?

I read an earlier rec on the same topic for Culinary Dropout at Hard Rock. We were there last week and had a pretty good dinner before a concert. They have beer pong tables set up in the patio, so I agree that this is a great idea.

Does anyone have other ideas? we're going up with our son and his knucklehead friends at the the end of October.

Two hours to kill tonight before Osteria La Buca dinner. Bar recs?

We have to run an errand in Beverly Hills ( we live in Pasadena) and want to find a fun cocktail experience while we kill two hours. We have an 8:00 reservation with friends at Osteria la Buca, so either neighborhood would be fine...

Anthaneum (sp?) - has anyone been to this joint on the CalTech campus ????

As a local, with friends who belong, I consider this an "event" place, rather than a drop by for dinner place. My wedding reception was held here, for 450 guests, and everything was lovely and first rate. Service is outstanding. The club is old-world beautiful, and the courtyard with white lights in the trees can be magical. I also held a large baby shower here for my sister in law. One of the charming things about hosting an ladies event here, is that the staff will use mis-matched china from the many beautiful and delicate sets that have been donated over the years. It is a treat to be invited and attend an event here, but I have never considered it a restaurant.

Great! I'll check it out - yes, parking once is preferrable!

Sat lunch for 25...FQ, or Downtown

Thank you! That's really good knowledge, as I have never been part of the industry, and so don't see it through the restaurants eyes.

We wound up getting a special lunch at The Uptowner, Mary and Greg Sonnier are doing a little demo and then feeding us...

Anyone tried Root 246 in Solvang?

We had one of those memorable meals - the kind you remember forever. Celebrating our 20th anniversary by driving up to the Santa Ynez wine country, we went to Root 246 for our Friday night dinner. First of all, this is a great looking place. NOT a traditional Solvang restaurant...there is a private room that we are already trying to figure out how to book with a group. Our server, Dana, was not only darling, but knew the menu well, helped with our choices and made the whole night a great success. We shared the Maytag Bleu cheese souffle for a starter - it was tremendous. My husband had the Pork chop with sausages in a bacon vinaigrette, and I ordered the Fried Chicken with mashed potatoes and Fuji apple shreds. Really fantastic. Dessert was lovely butterscotch pudding, and one of the best cappuccinos I've ever had at a restaurant. Wow, wow, wow... GO!

2 weeks in Oahu - KUALOA RANCH or Kaaawa

We are taking the grandparents and everyone else for two weeks in a lovely rented house. We plan to do a lot of grilling at the house, but definitely need recommendations for good local food - not fancy...

Any suggestions for food markets would be appreciated too!

This very new place had a major fire this morning. I was wondering if anyone had had a chance to eat there?

Recipes You've Never Heard of Outside Your Family

best appetizer - one thin slice of bacon, wrapped around a saltine cracker. Baked in a 350 ish oven until the bacon is cooked. i bake these on a broiler pan so the drippings run off. They taste like little puff pastry delicacies!

Help feed 18 year old VBall players

Hi- The 2010 Boys Junior Olympics is coming to Austin in early July. There will be lots of hungry boys coming to town. We are coming from Pasadena, CA area and would love some ideas to feed these hungry guys. Also any suggestions for Fourth of July activities would be great - we'll be in a gym during the day but any suggestions for the evenings would be welcome. We're staying at the Courtyard by Marriott on North IH-35 (Austin Central)

Many thanks
