What to order at Kanoyama?
I have read recommendations for the omakase (of course), the "sushi & sashimi for two", and the "tasting sushi". Which would you recommend, and are there any appetizers that one shouldn't miss?
We will be sitting at a table, which I know provides for a less engaging omakase experience, but a better conversation.
Thanks!
Cruelty-free Foie Gras
I am not sure about Sousa's foie gras, but David Chang just published an article in response to protesters. He uses fois gras from Hudson Valley Farm, has been to the farm and observed the sustainable, free-roaming, cruelty-free manner in which the ducks are raised. There is fois gras on pretty much all Momofuku menus, which means they fit your NYC request. Even better, all proceeds from those dishes are being donated to City Harvest and The Food Bank NYC.
Where to buy frog?
To cook, rather than eat in a restaurant. Downtown Manhattan locations would be ideal, but will go wherever.
Thanks!
Best Bubble Tea?
I have a friend who is moving here and has asked for recommendations. He will be living around Washington Square Park, so in the area would be nice, but I am sure he will travel for the best.
Thank you!
Wine Store near La Sirene?
Wanted to know if there were any notable ones nearby? We will be walking to the restaurant to it from the Spring St 6 stop.
Thank you!
Help finding great lamb chops
Ouest has immense, delicious lamb chops. Every member of my family other than me orders them every time we go.
Best burger and beer
Have started a burger and beer tradition with a friend and tomorrow night is our next meeting. We've covered P.J. Clarks, and the Shake Shack. What other similar places might be good, with possible bars to move to afterwards?
Thanks!
Saturday brunch with plain meats
Thanks so much for these! I am fine with ambiance of any kind; the suggestions of Ouest and Bar Americain are just places with food she can eat, that she likes. The real issue is that she is allergic to eggs (white and yolks) and all kinds of wheat, which makes brunch particularly difficult.
Saturday brunch with plain meats
I need to find a place for lunch on Saturday, but my mother has severe food allergies which limit us from the traditional brunch places. I need a place that has plain grilled meats or chicken, or really good salads. In the style of Bar Americain and Ouest.
Thanks!
Lunch in between Spring St. Station and W. Village
I am meeting a friend at the Spring St. Station, from where we will walk over to the W. Village. I would love some delicious, cheapish (under $15) lunch options, both by the subway station and in the west village as well, so that we have options depending on when we get hungry.
thanks!
Barbecue Restaurant for a Party
Has anyone been to a party at Blue Smoke? I am worried about the balcony feeling not distinct enough of a space.
Thanks again for everyone's input!
Need a romantic restaurant URGENTLY
Apizz would also fit your requirements perfectly.
Barbecue Restaurant for a Party
Of the great barbecue joints in Manhattan, which would you recommend for a party for about 40 people. I am holding it for my parents 30th wedding anniversary, but would like to keep everything fun and casual.
Thanks!
anniversary party 30 ppl
I am throwing a 30th anniversary party for my parents and need suggestions for a place. There will be around 30 guests, and I am open to any type of style...cocktail, buffet, sitdown dinner. I am curious about small restaurants or ones that have back rooms that could be rented out for not too high of a price...really, any place where one might throw a successful party.
Thanks!
Hong Kong with allergies
My mother and I are visiting Hong Kong from the December 27th to the 1st of January. I am incredibly excited to eat lots of amazing food. The issue is that my mother is highly allergic to all wheat, rice, (any grains, and that includes soy sauce), egg (yolk and white), and cannot really consume lemon, too much garlic, various spices.
Most of the time, this means she eats plain grilled meats, and plain grilled or steamed vegetables. So we do well at Italian restaurants, steak restaurants of course, except i really do not enjoy them, and anywhere where she can get the kitchen to leave off all sauces and provide a complete list of ingredients.
So, any restaurant recommendations (particularly for New Years Eve) would be amazing.
Finally, if, through all of these restrictions, anyone can thing of a way that I can have some great Chinese food, I would be immensely grateful.
Best Sushi for $75-Food Only, 1 person
Sushi of Gari. The east side location. It has incredible sushi, with some creative pieces as well, at far better prices than most of the "best" sushi places.
Microwave or Toaster Oven Cake Baking
I recently moved to Japan, where my kitchen consists of one stove top burner, a microwave, and a toaster oven. I have managed to become quite adept at triaging most of my regular food cooking, but deeply miss the pleasure of baking a good cake. Does anyone know recipes or ways of baking in the aforementioned appliances? Will the result taste anything like a good oven-baked cake?
24-hour food joints in Manhattan
Cafe Orlin on St Marks has lots of good bistro food. And there is always French Roast Cafe.
NYC's Best Cafes/Coffee Shops to write in
Columbus Avenue Cafe, on 83rd is actually really pleasant to sit in if you avoid the prime lunch hour. I have seen people play chess there for hours. They have free wifi...or at least, there are lots of surrounding places that have not secured their networks.
Beginner's French Cuisine?
Le Gigot or A.O.C. Bedford, which bills itself as "European".
aurora soho... thoughts about it. anyone been?
Aurora Soho was one of the most pleasant and simply delicious meals I have had in a while. Our waitress was charming and attentive. She recommended a wonderful bottle of wine and was just very lovely to interact with.
In terms of food, the restaurant also surpassed my expectations. I started with the roasted fig, ricotta, and bresola appetizer, in which all the items were very well balanced--I have been wishing I could have that dish every day. My father asked if he could simply get a pappardelle with pesto to start even though it was not on the menu. The chef readily complied and the outcome was wonderful. For my main course I had the pappardelle with veal cheeks as listed on the menu, while my father had the cornish. both of us ate every last morsel on our plates. For dessert we ordered the tortino di cioccolato. It is the classic chocolate "lava" cake that so many restaurants now serve, most of them badly. This rendition, however, was that dessert as it is truly intended to appear--everything from the surrounding cake, to the melted ganache inside--it was superb. The only thing I would not recommend is the fois gras terrine, which we ordered to eat while reading the rest of the menu. It was tasteless, but as I have suggested, the rest of the meal more than made up for it.
Although I am sure the restaurant could get quite lively, we went on a Thursday and it was calm, and very pleasant, perfect for intimate conversation. However, I think it would also be a nice place to bring a larger group as well. Ultimately, the food will provide you with no moments of epiphany, but for a lovely night out, particularly with such low prices, the restaurant is ideal.
Tokyo Birthday Recommendation
I will be staying in the Roppongi area for a few days, and the moving to an apartment near Shibuya. But I am fine going anyway--I am from New York, so the subway is something I am fine navigating.
Tea Restaurants?
You might try calling the various Sarabeth's locations. They have a very nice tea and might be able to accommodate your group.
Tokyo Birthday Recommendation
I am moving to Tokyo next week. I am a student and don't have a lot of money, but my birthday is two days after I arrive and so I am planning to take myself somewhere a bit nice and exciting. I won't know anyone, so if you can recommend somewhere where I won't feel really weird being alone, that would be great too.
Thank you.
Instead of A.O.C. Bedford
I need to make a last minute dinner reservation for tomorrow night. I very much wanted to go to A.O.C. Bedford, but they are booked. So I am searching for something similar in terms of the atmosphere and food.
Thanks so much.
Low key downtown, preferably Italian
I am in search of a restaurant for this Wednesday to take my father. Something in the vein of Hearth, Peasant, AOC Bedford, and Aurora. An Italian with numerous pasta dishes would be a plus, but any other cuisine is welcome too.
I am just looking for somewhere with delicious food and although price is not really an issue, I would like a relaxed evening, so I don't really want to consider the big name/fancy places.
Japanese Cookbooks
I will be living in Tokyo for the next few months and would appreciate cookbook recommendations. I know that there is a Japanese food dictionary I should buy so that I recognize items in the grocery store, but other than that, I have been unable to evaluate which books out of the many on the store shelves might be most helpful.
Any other cooking tips would also, of course, be appreciated.
Thanks.
Italian in the village?
In the East Village (alphabet city) there is Max (Ave B, between 4th and 5th) and well as Bianca (Bleeker off of Bowery) both are delicious and cheap, with pasta dishes running from 9 to 14 dollars. The portions are large at both, and you can get a bottle of wine for around 25.
Chocolate Birthday Cake
No, the cake definitely does not taste like beer. It just adds a nice different flavor, particularly because a dark beer like stout works to bring out the chocolate.
