Looking for best milkshake in Austin

You can get a milkshake made with whatever ice cream you want at Amys -- I get mine with double chocolate ice cream and malt

Looking for best milkshake in Austin

I totally agree that the Alamo milkshakes are excellent -- I get mine with chocolate and malt and the sunflower seeds are to die for.

Breakfast places near the airport serving breakfast during lunch hours?

Waffle House is right at Riverside and Ben White/ 71 and serves breakfast 24 hours a day.

Favorite Soup?

I agree that the Butternut Squash Crab Bisque is freaking amazing. I nearly cried of joy the first time I ate it.

I recently really enjoyed the Broccoli Cheese soup from the soup peddler. It was perfectly creamy (unlike my own version which was WAY too thick and a bit too salty)

Cheese-obsessed

If I were to ever do a retail shop in austin, it would be a specialty shop, though likely not wine.

Good idea about grapevine and I'm reminded that specs has a good specialty section as well.

Cheese-obsessed

Thanks so much -- this is exactly the kind of info i'm looking for!

Cheese-obsessed

No, no queso for me....I mean, I love queso, but right now I am looking for a much snootier version of cheese. I want cheese classes, I want giant wooden platters of stinky cheese with impossible-to-pronounce names, I eventually want to be behind the scenes and I want to know what I need to get there. I am going to check out pure luck -- hopefully they have a cheese making class there that will get my goat.

Cheese-obsessed

I'm cheese-obsessed and looking for a variety of ways to cure that obsession.

I've searched whole foods upcoming classes and none of them involve cheese-tastings. I am looking for something like the cheese tastings at the Artisanal in NYC. I do realize I am not in NYC, but are there knowledgable people doing tastings in Austin?

Also, I'm interested in working with cheese. I want to learn by doing -- whether that is as a cheesemonger or a cheesemaker, I am not picky. Anything like that available in Austin?

And for those of you in the potential "know" -- is there anything I should be studying or learning to have an "in?" I'm pretty knowledgable in the basics of cheese, but I'm itching to know more.

Anyone know why there aren't any stand-alone cheese-shops in austin?

Thanks

He's still there, well sort of -- now he's in the parking lot just north of Emos. He's there almost every Thursday, Friday and Saturday -- sometimes Wednesday too. And I just found out he lives next to my sister...weird.

Which healthy substitutes actually taste better to you?

I love the taste of Earth Balance "butter" much more than any margarine I've tried. It's not real european butter or anything, but I use it for my usual butter needs and in lots of my baked goods as well.

Mars

I went to Mars recently for lunch. The atmosphere was generally nice. I didn't experience the loud crowds, I'm assuming mostly because there weren't many people around. I liked the decor -- very modern-asian inspired. The menu was all over the place with dishes inspired by Vietnam, India, China, Japan. I balked at the $10 Vietnamese sandwich...mostly because I'm used to paying $2.50 at most for Banh Mi (by the way -- any good Banh Mi joints in Austin?) in my old neighborhood in Chicago. My dining partner and I ordered the Tuna Tartar for an appetizer. We didn't even finish it. It was okay, tender and fresh, but not mind-blowing. I ordered the Beef Tenderloin Salad -- the beef was overcooked (medium to medium-well!), and the dressing was mostly just oil. There was very little flavor to anything I ate.

I can't recommend it -- even if it were 50% less expensive.

All that I can remember from the original location was that I had a panic attack in the bathroom and after stuffing myself with lamb.
