Yet Wah's replacement All Seasons has opened in Diamond Heights

Not sure, I am not familar with that one or the one on Castro. Maybe so though given the identical spelling.

Yet Wah's replacement All Seasons has opened in Diamond Heights

The new Chinese restaurant in Diamond Heights shopping center has opened, where our beloved restaurant/bar Yet Wah used to be. Didn’t eat there, just looked around before shopping at Safeway. Grabbed a menu, prices are higher than most Chinese, but similar to Yet Wah’s ... but the rent is much higher in that building. They are not emphasizing the bar service, only about 6 seats (whereas Yet Wah had an elongated horseshoe bar that sat about 20 folks). No separate bar/lounge table area either, just one big dining room. And definitely no Karaoke stage :-(

Why’d Yet Wah have to be kicked out, it was a 30+ year neighborhood institution...............

Will report back after we try it. Like YetWah they don't deliver but do take out.

Source Pure Buttermilk in SF City Limits ??

Thanks, my wife says she has used that method and it's not the same as the pure butter milk in Ireland ....I'm surprised some purist doesn't sell it, or source it for their bakery.

Source Pure Buttermilk in SF City Limits ??

We can only seem to find Lowfat (1%) Buttermilk at our local Safeway and Whole Foods here in Noe Valley. Does anyone know a place where you can get the pure stuff for some comfort food home baking? No room for a cow in our yard.....

Gator Thompson on the move again, sadly :-(

Gator's is closed again, this from Grace Ann Walden's email:

Gator Bounces Back

Sadly, Gator Thompson closed his Dollie Marie restaurant in San Mateo. I commiserated with Gator and he told me what's up: "So with that said I will be the head chef in San Jose at Agenda Lounge starting April 1st.

"I will be bringing my healthy southern-style to the South Bay without the
headache of being the owner."

Saison - New rules, so most online reviews are outdated

That sounds right. We were the early Sat night dinner (which is 6PM now by the way). It came to $175 per person with wine including tax and 20% tip, as I said. Your point is well made. I don't really have a problem with the price for all the effort that went into it and the constantly flowing excellent wine. It's just that somehow I thought I had paid in advance at a rate of $100 based on OpenTable. Probably operator error on my part.

Saison - New rules, so most online reviews are outdated

To each his own and that was their opinion on the lamb (keep in mind they said it in the context of it being described as roasted), but as I said the food was very good. I was just surprised at how different the process was from all the reviews I had been reading.

Saison - New rules, so most online reviews are outdated

THE RULES HERE HAVE CHANGED !!!! YOU DO NOT PAY IN ADVANCE AND YOUR GUESTS WILL SEE THE COSTS !!! $175 PER PERSON (not $100).

First of all, it was a unique and to us, a very European look and feel experience. The wine pairings were spot on. All in all it was a great experience and they are very generous with the wine and especially re-fills, but the new prices well cover that generosity.

We took some out of town friends here last night. It was a nice experience. Nicely prepared food and worth trying but I found the online reviews very misleading, hence my headline in all caps. I had read as much as I could online beforehand, and was under the impression that the $100 per person we were charged up-front on OpenTable was advanced payment in full, now it is just a deposit !! The actual cost with a 20% tip was $175 per person. (We were a fairly large party).

Again, the online reviews about the wonderful feeling of leaving without getting a check no longer apply. Sadly, I told our guests all about that in advance so I looked/felt silly when a check arrived at the end. The folks we treated always try to pick up the tab, so we were excited that we could pay in advance and tell them it was covered without them ever seeing prices. We were disappointed to find the prices are now on the handwritten menu and the check was placed in plain view of the entire party. Not a bad thing, just not what I wanted or expected after all I had read. I think they lost something unique and fun by going mainstream on this.

As for the food, it is obviously prepared with great skill and care, but the portions are quite small. Also, the fish last night was too bony. Two of our guests are Paris-trained chefs and said the bones should have been removed pre-cooking and wrapped in cheese cloth to achieve the same flavor and moisture result, and thus to make the process of eating it less laborious and un-rewarding. The lamb was served a bit too rare for all of our liking. The menu said roasted not tartare. Lastly, our main pet peeve of these fine dining experiences is the absence of salt and pepper on the table, and we had to request both here as well.

All in all it was a great experience, so 3 stars, and they are very generous with the wine and especially re-fills, but the new prices well cover that generosity.

I hope this review can save someone the same embarrassment and disappointment we felt.

SF Elks Club Sleeper Gourmet Find of the Year !!!

My wife and I had dinner here last night as guests of our friends who are members. I was blown away. The new chef and food staff formerly conducted underground gourmet meals all over the Bay Area and have chosen the Elks as the place where they've "come in off the road." I had the best ribeye I've ever eaten, and as part owner of a popular steakhouse I've eaten many excellent steaks. The pricing amazes me most. For 3 times the price I'd have gotten 1/3rd the steak down at Mortons right downstairs. They also has an eclectic list of extremely high quality wines to choose from and the price of our killer pinot was $28. They are obviously running this as a cost-plus operation. Unbelievable in a beautiful old dining room with a great bar. The wait staff are as high quality as the chef. We are joining for sure. Sadly, I get the impression that the chef Tom will get a wanderlust and move on, he's only been there a few weeks, but it will be fun while it lasts !!

Best sausages?

Little City Meats in North Beach was my go to for sausages when I had my office nearby a few years back. Home made Italian traditionals plus other culture's specialty sausages, plus many house made creations usually very good. Multi-generational family run place (the Spinali's I believe). They usually have samples cooking to lure you in and they'll even make any combo of flavors and meats into a custom sausage if you order in advance. Here's the info, if you wanna call ahead to see what special sausages are in and confirm hours which I think can vary a bit. You'll love this place.

Deep-fried Maxwell Street Polish Dog @ Roy’s Chicago Doggery in Petaluma

Found myself being released in the early AM from the Maxwell Street cop shop lock-up (long story) back in the day while growing up in Chicago and they were grilling hundreds of the Polish and Italian sausages over charcoal out on the street. Not a deep fryer in sight, but I've recently learned and confirmed that my favorite breakfast places always deep fry their pork susage links and I never realized it. Makes for the juiciest and tastiest result !!!

Best wine to go with Dungeness crab?

For Thanksgiving, we always do pinot grigio and savignon blanc from a cooler full of ice and some cold water so it's slushy and the labels are coming off the bottles. It's just so nice with the crab and sourdough and mayo and lemon juice. Yum. The coldness is technically probably killing the flavor profile of the wines a bit, but with the food, it is killer.

Best food at the Dickens Christmas Fair?

Missed your original post, sorry. I always liked the bangers and also the hot nuts. Just great Christmas fun all around. My daughter (19) still loves it, her sister (17) not so much. When they were little both loved it.

attention: noe valleyans! shop small.

Parkside Tavern on Taraval (the Old Rick's Aloha)

Well we got there tonight (day 2). Very crowded and noisy and they were obviously just getting their stride so I'll withhold comment. Great spot for the Sunset Irish to gather and they already are. I might go again but not for awhile.
