I was dining in Arizona and thought my dining partner was ill, turns out he was just a little hoarse

"relatively reliable in regards to relieving themselves" Not relatively in my book, but as reliable as any trained service dog is.

What is your “grace period”?

I had a good friend who insisted on leaving 15 minutes before she needed to leave, no matter where she was going, "in case there was a freight train." When it was pointed out that in certain cases there were no tracks between her origin and destination, it made no difference.

"It's Too Big" -- And Other Bizarre Restaurant Complaints

You didn't mention that the server was young enough to be the customer's child. I agree that "young lady" is condescending in this case, meaning young lady is reserved for the young, ie < 12, and that's pushing it.

The sir complaint was ridiculous, as Miss Manners said.

Stop and Shop stops bag discount? Do your grocery stores offer one?

I know Target has their logo on theirs, but otherwise I haven't really noticed because I already have a stash of bags so I don't pay attention. I'm going to have to pay more attention to the bags next time I shop.

It got me to thinking one day when I accidentally didn't pay for something because I had more than enough bags and the item in question shifted underneath in the cart (yes I went back to pay for it). But since nobody stopped me, I wonder if they have any safeguards against stuff like that. I've learned so now I check, but it would be so easy to rip stuff off.

I'm confused. The reusable bag law passed in Seattle (and other cities I assume) is not about economics, but the environment.

The Ten Most Annoying Habits of Fellow Diners.

My ex hated almost all of the restaurants I liked or wanted to try, save for maybe one or two. He either wouldn't eat whatever he ordered and sulk, or send it back. Same with wine. Always sent the wine back in places I chose and he deigned to humor me. Yeah, not a big loss.

The Target where I go has huge signs on all their cart corrals reminding people to bring their bags if they have them. I think it's great because while I am in the habit of having cloth bags (I have a lot of them from trade shows) in the front seat and I still manage to forget them half the time, though I'm getting better.

What TV/movie/book restaurant would you want to go to? What place would you avoid?

That was taken from the Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago, back in the day when there was just one.

Kitchen Nightmares -- Amy's Baking Company Scottsdale -- Spoilers

How in the hell do these people manage to keep the doors open? How rich is Samy because it doesn't sound like Amy has any money, nor would I think she could get a loan given her criminal history.

Masterchef premier 5/22

Mock me if you will, but I think this is one of the better competitive cooking shows for the sole reason the drama is kept at a minimum. Of course they showcase the favorites and have the required a**hole, but not nearly in the same league as that wretched Hell's Kitchen. It's Fox, keep that in mind.

I don't understand why they barely acknowledge some newly aproned contestants and focus on others. For instance they sometimes show a "winner" running out with an apron and we don't have a clue what happened.

My guess is the people who were glossed over a) won't move on to the next round, and/or b) will be pretty much ignored unless they last for a while.

Parents- Do you bring food into a restaurant for your kids?

Servers I know don't take issue with the snacks for a kid but they wince at the sight of cheerios because of the mess they leave.

Good Restaurant.....um...Not for Me...

Agree that some of these restaurants are very good, but I cannot enjoy a meal knowing full well that if another couple is so close that their conversation becomes a distraction to me, mine likely is to them. I've also had a topic of a conversation we were having become the topic the strangers' an arm's or so length away from me. One time another couple joined in on our conversation. Who does that? These were always in highly regarded restaurants in Chicago. A friend and I call it "intimacy dining with people you don't know" because that's what it basically is, and no matter the quality of the food it doesn't work for me.

Then again, I hate B&Bs where the owners set up the breakfast part as one table and societal expectations are that you converse with people you don't care to, necessarily. So maybe it's me.

Good Restaurant.....um...Not for Me...

Restaurants with two and four tops placed too close together. If I have to move or another customer from an adjacent table has to move so one of us can get out, it's too close. That is my #1 objection. I've been at restaurants where I feel like I'm eating with strangers next to me because we're so close in proximity. If for some reason I go to a place like that, I never return no matter how good the food. I can't enjoy myself.

Do You Doggie Bag?

As do I. Actually, I don't have a big appetite so I usually order something that can be fit for leftovers. If I eat at a more upscale place it usually doesn't happen because the portions are reasonable. One time I was outside waiting for the people I dined with and I had my leftovers. A woman walked by and she noticed I had food. I don't know if she was homeless or not, but she definitely looked like she needed a meal. She asked if I could give her my pizza. I will admit that I briefly wanted to decline because I was looking forward to it the next day, but she needed it more than I did.

Is this a new gimmick?

I solve the problem by not even mentioning it's my birthday and woe be to my dining companions if they mention it. Although I did go to a local, non chain restaurant for someone else's bday and of course it was brought up. The staff gave us a free dessert but without the fanfare.

America's 25 most hated foods

My sister does. I think buttermilk is disgusting. I can't understand why two foods I dearly love, butter and milk, can be combined to make something so awful.

Update to Friday's tabloid story about The Barefoot Contessa

I think Ina Garten is to a cooking show as Sade is to jazz music. Quite lovely, I guess, if you like that sort of thing. Personally, I find both soporific. Dull, dull, dull. I guess I could also say it's like watching golf on TV if one is not a golf fan, which I am not. Snoozefest.

Good point. Probably healthier, too. Unless, of course, the kid wanted to do both. In that case, I would also compromise w/the child to make cupcakes rather than suffering through one of those awful cupcake shows, although the only one I've seen is "Cupcake Wars". Once. I couldn't take the judges, not to mention that Billy Bush clone pretending to be Ted Allan.

Update to Friday's tabloid story about The Barefoot Contessa

I think cupcakes are different from some woman cooking a dinner for her friends on Food Network. Cupcakes are much more appealing to a 3 y/o than a sit down dinner.

I still don't believe that this kid wanted to meet Ina. I think his mother did, or at least convinced him that he wanted it.

I think way too much has been made of this debacle, and Ina has gotten some really bad press, and I'm not even a fan. Something about her turns me off. I think it's that too mellow voice. And then we have Paula Deen, who makes me nuts. Isn't there someone in the middle?

Update to Friday's tabloid story about The Barefoot Contessa

Call me a cynic if you will, but I have a hard time believing that a 3 y/o would want to see Ina Garten, much less remember his MAW from 3 years ago. Nope, I think it's Mommy that wants to see Ina.

And for God's sake, seriously taking this to the media because you don't get what you want? I understand the child is doing well, and good for him. But seriously, assuming he's a survivor, do you really want to be known as the kid whose mother was a jerk?

I found it! The one thing that bacon DOESN'T make better.

While it certainly isn't the most yummy thing I've seen, it's also not the worst.

Perhaps I'm too old and jaded to be shocked by tasteless (pun intended) looking food. I mean, what do you expect from a site named cakewrecks?

Just Desserts 6: I want a retraction

I find this show to be entirely forgettable. I watch it every week but I have just a vague memory of the contestants, eliminations, etc. I have no idea why. Maybe because it's very boring, and I love the Top Chef franchise, just not this one.

Looking forward to the next TC, the one with previous contestants. As for the TC Just Desserts, I'm about done and I don't care who wins because the show is just so bland, and I love desserts.

Just Desserts Episode 4: High drama

What I don't understand about leaving early, if indeed her intention was to go home, don't they quarantine the "auf'd" cheftestants until the end of the series, or at least when it's revealed who's in the finals?

Master Chef elimination round part 2

Isn't that how these ubiquitous contestants shows w/"celebrity" judges, are done? Which is why I can't watch them--they seem to be tediously boring and full of schtick from both the judges and contestants. Must admit my knowledge of those types of shows is based on what I've seen on "The Soup". They watch it so I don't have to.

Anyway, I saw this show, for real. It's tediously boring and full of schtick. Thumbs down.

Sorry, you lost me when you mentioned Kim Kardashian. Really? Can't do any better than that? For all I know the rest of your prose was the equivalent of Dickens or Hemingway or Fitzgerald, but I'll never know. Credibility, my friend. Kim Kardashian? That's just wrong in so many ways.

The Lady Will Have the Prawns

I once dated a man who used to sometimes order for me (after checking what I wanted) and sometimes he didn't. There was no rhyme or reason for his behavior (not ordering vs ordering) or so I thought....ah, after reading here perhaps he ordered for me when he picked up the check, and didn't when I was footing the bill. Never put it together until now.

Oddly, and he was the only man who did this that I ever dated, but at first I was surprised however it never bothered me in that I thought it was sexist. I still don't. I'd much rather pick my battles elsewhere when it comes to sexism....like where it matters.

Eric Ripert Reveals His Five Embarrassing Moments as a Young Chef

Next Food Network Star--Toy Cartoon--WTF [spoilers]

Yeah, I didn't get that either. I was thinking at the time "wear a patch" because that's what I did. And my cornea was cut by someone's fingernail. (It was during a basketball game--she didn't mean to do it.) The only restriction I had was not to drive because my depth perception was altered due to seeing out of only one eye.

But then again, I wasn't on TV or in California.
