Cheap Lunch in Santa Monica?

Agree 100% - the Godmother, and almost everything at BCID, is unduly deified.

chinese in los angeles robertson-olympic area

Far from great. Far from it.

Excellent analogy bulavinaka!
If only I had done that when I met my (first) fiance's mom!

I Had a Great Crabcake today at Veggie Grill

I don't think it is very healthy at all...a big hunk of deep fried veggie matter with a glob of mayo-based tartar sauce probably has as much fat as many burgers...just very tasty.

I like the Veggie Grill's Kale Salad when I am being healthy. Almost everything else I have had there has been awful and not very healthy at all. The mac and "cheese" grossed out my nieces who are of an age that finds mac and cheese in any form a treasure of epic proportions.

It is NOT gluten free

I Had a Great Crabcake today at Veggie Grill

I LOVED IT!
Thanks, maudies5. Fantastic.

ISO "dao xiao mian" (handmade chewy noodles cut from ball with a knife) in Los Angeles

In Xi'an, one often sees the dough balanced on a the head of a chef wielding two knives, arms flying above his head, slicing the threads of yumminess into the boiling water.

Best Hand Shaved Noodles in LA?

Perhaps the "supervisors" are not what they appear to be. The caption below the photo reads, "The dough-peeling robot reportedly makes good noodles and is popular with customers. Two human cooks contemplate their future. "

Best Hand Shaved Noodles in LA?

Left out the text -

Worker shortages are no longer a problem for the owner of a restaurant in Xi'an, the provincial capital of Shaanxi province in northern China, as he has acquired a dough-peeling robot to make his shaved noodles, a local specialty traditionally made by hand.

Best Hand Shaved Noodles in LA?

If they would just buy the robot they could have 'em.

Best noodle soups in San Gabriel Valley?

Very cool. Thanks.
MaLan does an OK job with Lanzhou...will be really nice to try these.

Tony, what is H&H?

A Saturday Night Dinner Near the Whiskey on Sunset

Rainbow is far better than one would think. The chicken soup there is reaaly good. Many like the pizzza but I think it is a thick-crust grease-bomb. The fresh fish is usually excellent.

Night+Market (Thai)
Amarone (Italian)

Thanks all.
Hao Yu Lai was quite good. One of the best dishes is a simple lotus root positively drowning in Ma La (numb-spicy) sichuan pepper.

Anna Maria's on LA Brea - a little North of the 10? Funny place and owner, with a cute garden. What a distant memory that dredges up.

A “Short” Omakase Lunch at Mori Sushi

I think you ought to re-think that PeterCC. Keizo is a master with fish selection, flavors, textures, and sauces. Not to go, given your new found joy, is unthinkable (to my way of thinking). You can tell the waitress how much you want to spend on your meal or tell Keizo when to stop. He has always been very, very nice to me. He is not garrulous by any means, but he is quite willing to speak when not busy. He is occasionally sly and humorous! He or one of his associates always describes the fish, its provenance (when queried) and the sauce/preparation. I only go for dinner but I imagine it is slower at lunch so you may get even more conversation/information at that time. Save the money for it...I doubt you will be disappointed.

As for Nozawa, FWIW, I always thought his demeanor was misinterpreted as gruff and/or nasty when it was mostly a combination of perfectionism, Japanese formality/politeness and language barriers. There is an unfortunate characteristic of many American diners to behave "like they own the place" in restaurants. Nozawa clearly made it clear to many an impolite jerk who was the guest and who was the host. You may enjoy my previous description of the Sushi Nazi in action:

WS - no need to apologize for using yelp for navigation and foto-porn - it is great for that! I spend half the time (when I am driving - it's the whole time when I am not driving) on the way to a new place using the yelp app for pics and zeroing in.

Help A Sino-lovin' Brother Out in the West SGV Please

Looking for new ideas for Sunday night dinner in the Mid-to-West SGV.

About a month ago, I had a fantastic meal at 9679 Las Tunas recently (no Eng-rish name, my friends translated it as "Spicy Fish House"), I will likely go there again, but am looking for new ideas. Anything good SGV Hounds...open to anything from Shanghai to Nothern to Yunnan (just not Canto/HK/Chui Chow).
TIA Bob

Birthday Sushi

I noted on my last visit, about a month ago, that Zo uses more truffle salt than he used to. I find truffle oil abhorent on sushi (and almost anything else); the salt is not as bad (by a long shot) but still it annoys me. The waitress always asks if there is something that "you don' eat." I may have to tell them to hold the truffle salt next time.

Birthday Sushi

Yes. I rarely get the omakase.

Alternative to Sushi Zo - warmer atmosphere?

Agree 100% with your assessment of K-Zo, westsidegal.

WIth some prodding -- ask them to make sure the nori is crisp or you will get a mushy mess -- it is often excellent.
