Looking for great pizza place in Sherman Oaks/Studio City Area

While it is not in the exact area specified by the original poster, Dino's is relatively close and definitely excellent. I think it worth the drive from Studio City/Sherman Oaks.

Dino's uses high quality ingredients, has excellent salads and allows you to choose among a few styles of crust thickness and old-school or new-school toppings.

Marche in Sherman Oaks

Marche closing is a huge loss to the dining scene in the Valley. In fact, it was one of my favorite restaurants in the entire city.

Gary Menes is a true talent and I wish him luck wherever he lands.

New restaurant at Barsac Brasserie old location?

Osteria Firenze. It's fine but nothing special. There are much better options in the Valley, among them Raphael and Marche.

When I ate there it was full, I assume based on Fabio's stardom.

The patrons weren't hardcore foodies, more like the kind of people who have gourmet kitchens but don't actually cook in them - kind of the LA version of the bridge & tunnel crowd.

The food seemed fairly pedestrian. A gentleman sitting next to us sent his fish back for being overcooked and I overheard him say that they second try was only slightly less overdone but he didn't send it back. I really did enjoy the pear salad, it was the lone highlight. The ravioli were flavorful but really so rich as to render an entire portion too much - if I were to go back I would have to split the pasta with my dining companion.

Swiss Matterhorn returning to Van Nuys

what could be better this? My memories of spaetzel and schnitzel accompanied by the octogenarian accordianist with Chef Uli singing along - so delicious I can practically taste it now.

Authentic, Foodie Hole in the Wall

Casamento's, Charlie's Seafood, Coop's, Liuzza's, Mandina's, Manale.
I know most of these are out of your quarter-centric request but I don't think Casamento's or Mandina would be too terrible of a cab ride and it is a far more authentic local experience.

Don Huarache closed or just closed for the holiday?

Man, that is a bummer. Don Huarache had such good food and the lady who both cooked and served it could not have been any nicer.

What restaurant has your favorite duck?

My vote would go to Brigsten's. And, if I recall correctly, Brigsten's across the street neighbor, Dante's Kitchen has (or had) more than one good duck dish.

Best place to buy a whole brisket?

Gelson's has a sale on Brisket at $5.99/ lb right now - not sure how that compares to Costco or Smart & Final, I am guessing it's not a favorable comparison.

Don Huarache closed or just closed for the holiday?

I tried calling Don Huarache twice yesterday. The phone rang and rang, alas there was no answer.

I truly love their fresh pressed huaraches, sopes and quesadillas so, I'd be more than a little disappointed if they've closed up shop.

Hopefully, they are just closed for a holiday vacation.

Ready, set, GO! TOP 5 Restaurants in LA

I'd be happy to give you my list.

However since you choose to exclude

a) the San Gabriel Valley, which has among its many cuisines, the best Chinese food in the world (outside of China, HK & Taiwan) not to mention fantastic Vietnamese & perhaps the best Mexican restaurant in all of LA County, Babita
AND
b) the San Fernando Valley, which has Sushi-row in addition to magnificent Peruvian, Middle-Eastern and Thai restaurants

then I must question your judgment and any bona fides you claim as a Chowhound.

So, go ahead and stick with downtown, the westside, hollywood.
You'll definitely eat well enough (great pizz, Italian, Mexican & Seafood) but certainly not as well as someone who is willing to actually eat in Los Angeles, which, despite your posting, includes the dreaded San Fernando Valley.

Mantee in Studio City - Anyone Been?

Believe me Carter, you won't mention Carnival in the same breath with Mantee once you've tried it. It is little slice of foodie heaven.

Mantee in Studio City - Anyone Been?

Mantee will make you rethink all the places you thought had the best middle-eastern food, and LA has plenty.
It is a place that celebrates cuisine, not really comparable to places like Cedar House, Skaf's or Carnival - all of which I enjoy.

Mantee isn't a dive. It is a serious restaurant with a serious chef who is working to distinguish himself in a city that has a lot of very good armenian/lebanese middle-eastern fare but has nothing like what he's doing.

Mantee is simply on a higher plane. Also, aside from being delicious, it has an amazingly vegetarian friendly menu.

One caveat though, they don't yet have their liquor license so you'll need to BYOB for now.

Chicken Noodle Soup

When I am sick, I muster the strenght to go to Gelson's where I buy a huge container of their Chicken Noodle Soup.
It has never disappointed me.

Disappointing food trip to NOLA (very long review)

WIth respect to the food quality at various NOLA establishments - I say, to each his own.

However, I find it more than a bit surprising that one would believe reservations unnecessary for brunch or breakfast on Father's Day. That is operator error.

Vicious Dogs in NoHo (on Lankershim just N. of Magnolia) is really, really good. They take their hot dogs pretty seriously and it shows!

japanese restaurants in san fernando valley

Tama no longer exists. Katsu opened a place in Beverly Hills. The old Tama location is now yet another iteration of Katsu-ya, called Kiwami. It is good and even retained one of Katsu's better sushi chefs.

Bokado (Studio City) anyone?

It ain't cheap. Though the garden salad is a great deal at $10, apps and salads seem to be in the $12 or $14 pricepoint and entrees range through the twenties.

Bokado (Studio City) anyone?

Very enjoyable, not perfect mind you, however it is brand new and hasn't yet had a grand opening. The house salad is gorgeous and plentiful, the bread is delicious, they have a nice though small selection of cheeses and a well chosen wine list.

The Waffle. Does it completely suck?

It is fine but not a fantastic value.
When I ate there the scramble was fine but the folks who ordered waffles seemed upset at the portion, which was one normal sized waffle. It wasn't bad but service was iffy - I won't be racing back to eat at The Waffle.

Dining report -- Grill Room, Riomar, Brennan's (With food pictures)

Rio Mar's wine list is primarily Spanish with some Chilean and Argentine mixed in for good measure and one or two bottles of domestic. It is not mind blowing but solid and works with the food. I usually order a white due to the delicious seafood dishes on the menu - an Albarino, Txakoli or something from Rueda. But don't take my word for it - see for yourself: http://www.riomarseafood.com/menu.asp...

La Scala imposing a minimum per person!

i know nothing about La Scala but have you tried contacting the owner? it seems ridiculous that they would turn business away and especially in light of your being a longtime customers.

recommendation for 8 20/30-somethings

Right across the street from the beloved Brigsten's, you will find Dante's Kitchen. It is casual in both dress code and atmospher but with great food. If the weather is nice, ask for the patio.

Some help for an NYC hound?

For cocktails and small plates, I would reccomend Hungry Cat or Comme Ca.

Santa Monica or Hollywood Farmer's Markets might work though I'm not so sure about the pork.

Grace, Josie & Melisse feature local produce - in fact - it seems like most top-tier restaurants in LA use local purveyors. If you want strict farm-to-table you'll need to leave LA and head to the Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, or to Manresa in Los Gatos.

Don't have much on the Silverlake/Los Feliz front but I am certain other people on the board have something to say.

Hungarian Food In Los Angeles?

Hortobagy, the Hungarian restaurant that was on Ventura Blvd. for years and years, has re-opened in North Hollywood at the site of Maximilian's. They're keeping the name Maximilian's but the menu is all Austro-Hungarian.
