Interesting. I assume it's south of rabbit run. I'll have to make a right out of rabbit run next time I'm there. Thanks!

Fancy's Southern Cafe - Fort Myers

So the wife and I finally got around to trying out this place the other week.

Our first visit there we went towards closing on a Saturday night. We shared the et toufee as an appetizer. We both enjoyed this dish a lot. It had a very heavy andouille sausage taste which we both like but the flavor overall was quite good. My only complaint was that it was bordering on the side of being too salty. This is coming from a person who loves salt.

For entrees, I had the fried chicken, which I liked a lot. The chicken had a very crunchy skin and still very juicy inside. For my sides I got the black eyed peas and french fries. The peas were okay but a little bit bland. I wish I could have taken some salt from the et toufee and transferred it to the peas. The fries were a bit soggy but I was really too full from the chicken to eat the fries.

My wife got the pot roast. This dish was average. It was totally not what we were expecting. It came out almost like a soup. I don't know if this is how pot roast is in the South but growing up in NY pot roast was always a slice or two of beef along with some veggies with a touch of gravy. This was like 75% gravy.

Our second visit we went during the lull of the lunch and dinner service. For starters we had the boiled peanuts. Yuck. I guess we didn't know what we were getting because the peanuts came in its shell, sitting in a liquid that tasted like soy sauce. It had jalapeƱos in it but the texture of the peanuts was not to our liking. We weren't expecting it to be wet and the soy taste or whatever the sauce was just wasn't good.

I had the crawfish po boy which was very good. The roll was nice and soft and the crawfish was fried perfectly. My wife again had the et toufee which this time had a bit more of a tomato flavor as opposed to the sausage flavor. I thought the seasoning, in terms of salt, was much better. She also had the pork spare ribs which were outstanding. Perfectly cooked and juicy. The bbq sauce and honey complimented the ribs quite well. But, honestly, those ribs were delicious just by themselves with nothing on them.

The wait staff were very nice and attentive both visits.

New cheese shop in Sarasota

My wife and I were just there yesterday. There is a huge store front window over looking the street with a big beautiful wood communal table to sit at. I believe the owner's husband made the table. You walk in, you see the breads and you get a faint aroma of that lovely cheese smell.

We spoke with the owner, Louise. She's a very nice person with an interesting background and a passion for cheese.

We decided to get a 3 cheese sampler and let her pick the cheese for us. We also decided to get a half bottle of a very nice pinot from Wilamette Valley.

The cheese plate came with local honey, figs, dried apricots, grapes, blackberries, walnuts, apples, and bread. The bread was quite good, slightly chewy which I love. But the star of the show were the cheeses! Oh my, we loved the selections that she made.

We had a goat cheese camabert from, I believe, North Carolina. This was my wife's favorite. I liked it a lot. It was soft with a slight saline taste towards the end, probably from the rind. We also had a cow's milk cheese from New York which I can't remember the name. It was creamy, stinky, with a nutty flavor. Fabulous. I think that was my favorite but it was hard to pick one because they were all so good. The 3rd cheese was a blue from Oregon. It was crumbly and creamy and quite good. It was a bit strong on the blue flavor but I like that.

Overall, had a great experience. I thought the prices were very reasonable. Can't wait to go back there again.

I 100% concur with you. My wife and I discovered this place back in February. We had 2 anti-pastis, and 3 pasta dishes! I couldn't get enough pasta so I ended up ordering a 2nd dish. I'm such a pig.

Here are some photos from our first time there.

FT MYERS BEACH: here's my laundry list....bagels, pizza, Greek, Chinese take out, thai, Italian, Farmers market

My wife and I both like Nomiki's a lot. We're both from NY so we've had our share of good Greek places. I think I've tried 3 Greek places here in Fort Myers and Nomikis is by far the best I've found.

They completely re did the interior last summer so the inside is much nicer than what it was. All the dishes I've gotten from there have been quite good. I personally like the gyro and their grilled ocotopus but you've got to eat it when it's hot and still tender. Usually their side dishes that consist of greens (green beans) usually are quite mushy and over cooked. The owener and the wait staff are very friendly though.

I've been to the Athenian one time and will never go back there. The gyro, if you can call it that, was disgusting. I think I ate 2 bites and threw the rest out. Oh well, live and learn.

Is the anything GOOD in Fort Myers!!??

I wasn't too impressed with the pizza at Ciao. The toppings were fresh, however, I'm not a fan of their crust. Their pizza crust is way too bubbly and thick. I felt like I was eating a Boboli pizza dough.

Fort Myers - El Acajutla is a local gem that will make you a regular

The wife and I just ate at this place about a week ago. It's a hole-in-the wall place for sure. Have to admit the food was excellent but the conditions were pretty run down and disgusting. There were these tiny little flies that kept pestering around our food and drinks, one of which fell in my wife's wine. She sent the wine back and got a bottle of beer. After seeing the fly drowning in the wine we both decided to cover our bottles with napkins while we ate.

We ate very fast in order to beat the pesty flies. Such a shame, the food was excellent but we couldn't really enjoy it.

I'm from NYC. Regarding pizza, the closest you're going to get is Grimaldi's in Bell Tower.

Edit: I just remembered there's Downtown House of Pizza, which is very NY style. It's located in downtown Fort Myers, therefore not close to FMB.

For Greek and Italian there is Nomiki's Plakka and Cibo, both of which are located in Bridge Plaza on McGregor. Crave is also in that plaza too.

If you're ever in the downtown area, I would highly recommend Yanos, located on First street.

Awesome Korean in Laurderhill

So I accidentally discovered this little Korean restaurant in the outskirts of Fort Lauderdale. It's called Manna and is located on N. University Drive in Lauderhill.

My fiancee and I are both Korean and ever since we moved from Manhattan to Fort Myers, Korean restaurants are one thing we miss. Let's just say there's no good Korean in Fort Myers, period.

We drive to Fort Lauderdale once a month to go to the big Asian market there and one day we saw this place called Manna and decided to go there for lunch. It's a family run place and the food is amazing! Everything is so fresh and there is absolutely no MSG in any of their food. If you're used to Korean that has a lot of MSG in it, you might come away not liking the food since you'll think the food has no taste. This is the first Korean restaurant where I didn't have to drink a gallon of water later on.

Anyways, the wife makes all the banchan (side dishes), and the husband cooks the entrees. The banchan is super fresh and tasty. I personally love their kim chee but some might think it doesn't have enough flavor.

The 2 times I've been there I've had hameul pajun (seafood pancake), mandoo (fried dumplings), galbi (beef ribs), soondubae jighae (tofu stew), a grilled fish dish which I can't remember the Korean name, and doenjang jjigae (bean paste stew). They will even make Korean dishes upon request if it's not on the menu if they have the ingredients in stock. I also requested Ddukbokki (spicey rice cake) since it was not on the menu and it was sooooo good. Every dish I just listed is amazing. I've yet to have a dish or banchan that I have not liked. Their food reminds me of my friend's mom's cooking. Light, fresh, and refreshing.

The wife and daughter are very nice and helpful. I highly recommend this place and hope the business does well.

Farmer's Markets in SW Florida....any hope this time of year

LMF, I discovered this excellent little farm that have great veggies, greens, fruits, etc. Their arugula is amazing and is my favorite. It is so peppery and woody and full of flavor. I can no longer eat super market arugula. Also, they sell fresh eggs which they get locally from a farmer who have some chickens. The eggs are really, really good and the yolks are a deep yellow color. I'm getting excited just thinking about this place.

The name of the farm is Rabbit Run Farm and located on Neal Road in Fort Myers. Google it and go to their website. They will list out what is currently in season and the things they are growing and selling. They're only open to the public for 4 hours on Saturdays. I try to go there every Saturday to stock up for the week. If you go, bring cash or a check. No credit cards accepted.

Artisan Bread Company, Fort Myers. Any good?

I tried a French baguette from Artisan today and boy was I disappointed. What a sorry excuse for a baguette!

I guess I'll stick with the in-house bread from Marios.

Artisan Bread Company, Fort Myers. Any good?

Thanks for the feedback LMF.

Unfortunately I do not remember the French restaurant you had mentioned since I moved to Fort Myers from NYC only last year. Is said restaurant still operating? I'm going out on a limb and say no.

I can't remember if I've been to French Bread Oven. I feel like I have since I do remember going into a French bakery off of Cypress when I first moved down here. I do remember that I wasn't too impressed with the French bread though.

The bread from Balthazar is amazing! Amy's is decent too. I took for granted all the great bread that I had available to me while living in Manhattan. Man, that sucks!

I guess I'll have to try out Artisan for my own.

So I was at Norman Love this morning picking up some croissants and I noticed as I was driving away, Artisan Bread Company right next door. I checked out their website and their bread looks really good.

I'm curious if anyone here have had their breads?

RevrendAndy - Thanks! Indeed I am the one getting married. I'll be checking out both Mason and Gracie's this weekend.

My fiancee really likes the idea of a cupcake wedding cake. The more she talks about the more I'm being sold on the idea.

Agora Restaurant North Fort Myers

LMF - I went to this place tonight with my fiance and I'll have to admit I have mixed reviews. On one hand, the food was outstanding. I had the same dish as you and my fiance had the half chicken. We also shared the sampler for the appetizer. On the other hand, the service was sooooo slow and, sadly, it wasn't even busy at all. There were only 3 other tables, all of which was outside, and our table which was the only one inside.

I ordered a beer which took like 10 - 15 minutes for our server to return only to find out they were out of the beer that I ordered. Which at that point, my fiance ordered a beer and I told our server that I would need a few minutes to look over the wine list. Another 10 minutes passed and a different server, this time a girl, brought my fiance her beer and at that point I ordered my wine. So it basically took us 20-25 minutes just to get a drink.

The service did approve when we got the girl. Overall, the food was very good and would go back. I just hope they'll be a little bit quicker.

Banh Mi in Fort Myers area?

I think Saigon Paris near Bell Tower has that on their lunch menu. It's not called Banh Mi on the menu. I've never had it since I've never been there for lunch and it's not on their dinner menu.
