Are there any old-time soda parlor/candy shops still around?

Eddie's is horrible, place could be totally redone--what a waste or a prime little corner

love this...hildebrandt's...

5 pennies in rockville centre is supposed to be good, haven't been yet..but will go when I'm out by the beach http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJP8FyF7Bt8

I didn't care for itgen's ice cream, and the place had a musty smell

strawberry short cake

I like the gelato from villabate, but i've never had their cakes, but if you didn't like it, then at least you can strike that off the list...Years ago, Veniero's used to make a good one, but it's gone down in quality considerably...the problem is, once you have something amazing, it become what you judge all others by..that's what happened to me recently with Malverne, everything I've been getting from them has been so impressive...--but please post if you find an exceptional in brklyn..maybe check out the place recommended to you--there's a photo on their website of it..looks decent...

strawberry short cake

Just had the best strawberry shortcake in my life from Malverne Bakery in LI--it's worth a trip from anywhere, but they are closed mon-tues--I've had many of them all over the place, and nothing could touch the freshness or lightness of this one--absolute heaven..all fresh strawberries and whipped cream and airy sponge cake, not soggy--------and on top are white/drk choc covered strawberries...

Wherever you do go insist on fresh strawberries, or they'll give you that dreaded jam, or jam combo, which is horrible--and often the stabilized whipped cream that's used has such a bad aftertaste, or flat taste..............

I'm sure the usual suspects will be recommended to you--perhaps, try Villabate and insist on fresh strawberries--but no way will it match Malverne--and you did ask for "great".

Fairway opening in Douglaston

$20 a lb for shrimp from "india previously frozen" is a joke. Their seafood is from 2nd rate sources , prices are insanely high--where is the bargain exactly??? Have not figured it out yet--I like the chip specials, but other things are very high--produce is high, and quality and turnover not so great. Mushrooms look old. Not crazy about Murray's chicken. Prepared food bar is so unappetizing, as are the prepared food on other side of store. Aisles are a nightmare to navigate--bakery is lousy--olive section is ok, but much prefer the olives at Iavorone--and their oil cured olives are just awful. Their calamata ok--and few others ok..but much better quality at Iavorone in New Hyde Park. Gluten free selection is excellent--rice selection very good too. Honey selection very good. Spice selection good. Dr. Prager frozen line all there, very hard to find it all in one place..i buy lots there for my kid--nuts priced very high--better at Trader Joe's. Cheeses hit or miss--and for certain cheeses like specific cheddars, costco's price can't be beat. And there's other things I'm not allowed to say :)...but the thing is I go there infrequently to stock up on the things that are hard to find elsewhere, but it's not some oasis, to me.

Best Bagels in Queens?

I didn't realize this was an old thread...i have a post further on up in this thread...but, having tried every bagel place in Queens..without a doubt best bagels are at Utopia. Excellent bialys, too. The spreads can vary in quality sometimes. Don't care for any of their baked goods--just get bagels and spreads. For onion board though, Walls in LI is the place, and for the best b/w cookies these days, and just about every other sweet you can imagine..Malverne Bakery in LI--can't go to any other bakery anymore..they are just too good.

Best Bagels in Queens?

agreed, and the place looks filthy too..

Best Greek restaurant in ASTORIA and bakery too(Greek) for dessert!

the grilled calamari is excellent as well...my husband likes it over the salad--and their spinach pie is a close second to mine..and that's a very high compliment coming from my husband, as my spinach pie is a very guarded secret! What's nice about Med Grill is that it's not in chaotic Astoria--it's so mellow over there..and who can resist a pit stop at Utopia bagels to stock the freezer?

Best Greek restaurant in ASTORIA and bakery too(Greek) for dessert!

None of these places mentioned are as good as Mediterranean Grill in Whitestone in my opinion, their greek food is excellent--and of high quality.

Best bakery in Queens and why?

came to the realization yesterday that Malverne Bakery in Malverne, LI is the best bakery in the entire nyc metro area--see my post on li board..............lines out the door for a reason.

GOOD Jewish Bakery in Brooklyn???

they can't touch walls bakery in cedarhurst, it's no contest

Yum Yum Thai Restaurant in Sunnyside

maybe there was a misunderstanding, but was in there a week or so ago, and they were both there--what's nice about i am thai is thay if you're on a special diet they will accomodate you--they can even put it in their computer so you don't have to repeat it if you get the same thing often.

Yum Yum Thai Restaurant in Sunnyside

I'm not sure what you're talking about with I am Thai, it's the same owners, husband and wife and they are Thai not Chinese. He's the chef and his wife is chef, and it's the same people who've always been there for several years.

Malverne Bakery in Long Island

bought a bunch of stuff there today and beautiful cake...lines out the door..I dare anyone to find a bakery in the entire nyc metro area that can touch the quality and freshness of them. I'm hooked!

Dimas European Bakery in Rego Park?

Hi George, we lived down the street from the bakery for many years, and once you sold it, it went downhill pretty quickly. We moved out of that area about 7 years ago, but it hasn't been a bakery for a long time. We used to enjoy your pastries quite a bit, especially the ones with rum! There aren't too many Romanian style bakeries around like that anymore...glad to hear your're well, former neighbors and customers!

what's good and child friendly in long island city for dinner?

Hi stuart...that's a good idea...do they make good chicken or is it just pork and other meats?

what's good and child friendly in long island city for dinner?

Will be in LIC on thurs night, looking for dinner with 7 year old in tow (actually his b-day is tommorow also, so newly 7), and wondering what would work for dinner...never tried Sage for dinner...would this be good? What else is good with some variety in that area for dinner?

Thank you for some update info...

Lake Pavilion, new Chinese in Flushing

GOOD Jewish Bakery in Brooklyn???

queens pita in kew gardens hills has what you seek

Mediterranean Grill in Whitestone is still yummy--and they have brunch, too!

http://www.yelp.com/biz/mediterranean-grill-new-york

Hadn't been in awhile to med grill on willets point in whitestone, but went there today for lunch, and all was still good--they have very reasonable lunch special--and found out they are now serving sunday brunch with some very nice choices---brunch places in queens are few and far between....they are having a special mother's day brunch too...

Had grilled calamari over salad, grilled chicken over salad, both very good..love their tzaziki sauce, so flavorful and fresh--spinach pie, good also---

like this place a lot, food is always fresh, prepared with care, and the waitress there is very very nice and accomodating.....

Cannelle Patisserie in Queens

30th ave in astoria? what's good?

has anyone tried the new De Mole on 30th ave?

Cannelle Patisserie in Queens

the cakes i;ve had from malverne bakery on LI blow away cannelle's cakes, and I like Cannelle alot.

After 9:30pm take out options in Sunnyside and LIC?

Parking is so hard on QB near Mangal--but, yes, that's an option...I'm just a bit burned out on Turkish med food----I don't eat meat, except for organic chicken or some seafood--and for other members of my family that do eat meat, I wouldn't eat halal for several reasons--of which here are a few. the way that halal meat is butchered is truly disturbing to me, as well as halal is generally very poor quality-, from source control to serious processing bacteria issues, etc---I know from many reliable sources how the meat is butchered and handled, etc--and you can see lots of evidence of this if you research it....I also don't care for kosher meats either--the butchering techniques can certainly vary depending on where you go--but the taste and texture of kosher meat is not to my liking--and it smells horrible--when all the blood is drained from the meats it changes it. I still cook meat for my family, and I try to know what I'm buying. But, frankly, I don't believe the current jurisdication over kosher and halal processing properly protects the consumer.

After 9:30pm take out options in Sunnyside and LIC?

Looking for take out on Monday nights in Sunnyside and LIC as I'm there until late-- used to get takeout from I Am THAI until they started closing on Mon nights permanently instead of just during the summer----but I liked that I am thai would adapt to different dietary restrictions I have....so mostly I go to De Mole instead...are there any other options, especially comparable Thai in the vicinity--I've never tried Curry point, and they've got a B inspection--and I tend to not like halal anyway---I don't want a place that closes at 10pm because by the time I drive there, and find a parking space if necessary--it's getting near to 9:45pm--so, I want the food fresh--not the last bits before they close up. --open to most cuisines...thanks for some update info :)

authentic italian in BK

rice ball, lasagna with meatballs, eggplant capanota, pasta with sardine and fennel, at Joe's of Avenue of U

Cannelle Patisserie in Queens

the baguettes and the sourdough bread are actually great at La Boulanderie in Forest Hills, and the gateau breton little cupcakes are better at La Boulangerie, other than that, Cannelle has them beat, and prices cheaper at Cannelle, too.

Is there anywhere in Flushing for SUPER FRESH Lo mein? with choice of add in?

ended up at spicy and tasty, he picked out all the veggies, we ate them...good shrimp with broccoli very light but fresh--the new owners there are so friendly, they always remember us, the last owners also always remembered us, but weren't overtly friendly--the man who is there now, is always very kind and asking how everyone likes everything...good sesame noodles, too.

Is there anywhere in Flushing for SUPER FRESH Lo mein? with choice of add in?

Looking for a place for picky 6 year old who will eat lomein but will only eat certain veggies, and white meat chicken, he tried the lomein at spicy and tasty and it was full of dark meat chicken and kind of gross, their veg lomein is very good though..........is there anywhere in flushing area, that is clean, A grade, and cute looking, that serves lomein like this? I know it's a hard request and goes against the entire adventurous concept of flushing food, but it would be helpful to know..thanks.

Dish recommendations at Tanoreen!!

I don't see that chicken dish on their menu on their site, is it included on a separate menu? Is that available only in the evening, or for lunch as well? Thanks---I've never been there--and will be in Brooklyn once a week for a while...
