christmas eve

Hi Im posting this thread here and in Outer Boroughs.

is there any nice restaurant -I was thinking cuban, mexican (or any latin), or italian but also thai, greek, it can be any place really- that celebrates noche buena, I dont mean that that they serve a different menu necessarily, but that will be festive the 24? it can be a hole in the wall, anything will work as long as it's festive...my friend is craving for nochebuena festivities and I need to do something about it. I will really appreciate your help.

Zoma - new Ethiopian in Harlem- 113th St

I am VERY confused, I used to go to an ethiopian by the name of Zoma in Harlem, around 2002. Does this one have anything to do with it? Am i crazy or there was a Zoma over there about 10 years ago?

Help with Invitation

Hi, I am inviting someone special to dinner, I was thinking about going to Peasant because he mentioned it once but none of us haven't been. On that price range... is there someting better? Is Peasant a good choice? I guess I would eat the cochinillo... Is it really good (compared to the best cochinillos in Segovia and Northern Spain)? Is there any spanish or italian incredible place that im missing?

Just returned from Puerto Rico

Im sad you dilsike your trip and sad to tell you stayed and eat at the worst places possible. no foodie in puerto rico eats at Ájili Mójili or The Palm, and Metropol is not the place to eat either it is just a long time cuban place, that's it..Since i moved from PR i do not visit this Board (cause if you're from there you know where to eat and puerto rican foodies do not post here to update on new places or anything) and im always at the Manhattan board, but I just saw the reccs people have posted here and I have to say they seem pretty clueless....!You need to eat at the few nice places in el area metropolitana (even in Condado you could have gone to Pamela's which is really nice) and go to "la isla" (that means, the countryside) for good food an non touristy ambiance..I never go to condado to eat or stay, it's pretty bad, but PR has a lot of nice places, you just need a car and get out of San Juan. If you want sepcific reccs for next time, just ask.

Pastrami Alert - Stay Away from Carnegie Deli

this is a hiperbolic pose. i was at carnegie hall today and i went to CD and had the pastrami - i had never been in the 16 years i've lived in NYC because i live next to Katz's but i needed to confirm the thread....The pastrami was not bad at all, the place is not nice, doesn't have Katz's charm, service is pretty bad and is overpiced BUT the pstrami is very good. PLEASE try to be a little fair when judging food...

Where to Buy Italian Beer in Manhattan

they have Peroni in a lot of places, even in Associated (the one at 14st and 1st Ave)...just go to any bodega on east village, they should have it.

First night out in a while--where to eat in the East Village or Lower East Side?

Apizz is nice in terms of space but i don't like their food much. The pasta dishes i had there were overcooked. Perbacco's food (their app and their pastas- not crazy about their other dishes) is better. Im not crazy about Barbene either, is too expensive for what you get. On the expensiveline... what about Peasant?

Garifuna Star -- World's rarest cuisine comes to South Bronx

Creole? oh my god, of course not. 100, 000 of the garifuna people speak garifuna, their own language, which derives from the inyeri language. they are also fluent in english and the speak some spanish. but garifuna does not qualify as a creole language, no way!

Good Wine in Montreal?

Hi, I'm sorry I was doing laundry. Yes I mean specific bottles that I could buy in a store (to bring it to a BYOB for example), red wine, i like different types of red, medium or full body, i do not like merlot, aside from that i like any grape (shiraz, garnache, sangiovese, nebbiolo, petit shiraz, cabernet, cabernet franc, pinot noir, zinfandel/primitivo, tempranillo...) i love red wine and by affordable I mean less than $20. I guess i'll be eating mostly french.

Good Wine in Montreal?

I'll be there tomorrow for a few days. Any recommendation on good, affordable wine?

Help! hors d'œuvres and drinks in a garden

yes, sorry for the density/p.correctness factor, i'm from one of Spain's 1492 colonies,jj. well, i went to loreley and my report is the following: i liked the space, I liked their beer selection and i liked their appetizers, what i did not like was the crowd. it was packed, and packed with tons of white blond people, not from germany but young jersey guys and some really loud frat boys (sorry for my polit. incorrectness now). so even though i would go with some friends to try have beer & food i think it is not the kind of place my friend (and the 12 people we're inviting) want. also, everyone was soo young (43 seemed really old). i was thinking...tell me if this is Too lame, but i went to couple of places today and the only place that was consistently half empty (i went around 8 and again around 11) was Casimir's lounge (on avenue B). I don't love this place because the food is not great and the beer selection is poor but i though that maybe in this big group context, going to the lounge and sticking to drinks wasn't a bad idea...What do you think? i'm giving up the garden idea...today was really hot/humid and if next saturday is the same we won't enjoy a garden.

Help! hors d'œuvres and drinks in a garden

truth is i never liked 1492, beginning with the political charge of the name ... i'm taking your Loreley suggestion into account, i'm heading there today to check it out because i went once and i forgot how it was.

Help! hors d'œuvres and drinks in a garden

I wrote a post and it appeared under someone else's name instead of mine...! did the system got confused? Does this happened before? This was MY post:
hi thanks, yes i know the 3 places, because i live on ave c (and work near la lanterna), but it hadn't occurred to me, thanks. i also thought about 1492,'s patio...i haven't been there in about 2 years. how is it lately? i think i might switch to a tapas place...i'm confused, sorry,jj. it is true that is not necessarily crazy on saturdays but the get together is not really in the afternoon, it would begin at 8. i even thought about going to stanton social -just because we haven't been- but again the people coming are different people with very different incomes and SS could be a tough imposition. 1492....maybe...

Help! hors d'œuvres and drinks in a garden

i went to the bowery hotel today and they told me the garden has no opened yet, just for private parties, and you have to arrange and pay for the party and they didn't let me see it, you have to make an appointment in order to do so....I just a nice bar with, tapas or appetizers where 10-12 friends ranging form 29y/o to 60y/o (most of them in their 30s or 40's) can get together and have nice time, around 8pm. i went to 7 or 8 places today, but can't find a nice normal garden where you can drink and have appetizers (they want everyone to eat dinner in order to make a reservation and i dont want to force everyone to have dinner). I was thinking that even though it will be a Sturday it will be Labor day weekend Saturday and if I remeber correctly, the bars in the city are not too packed those days, so anyone knows a nice (or just normal) bar, it does not have to be outdoors anymore...

What is the deal with Stella?

well, i agree but i think the analogy is not quite accurate: the stella artois is a bland lager, ok, but corona is a bland lager that tastes really BAD. By the way, Corona was a Puerto Rican beer in th 1950's and there was a huge legal issue around the name, because there were 2 beers -one mexican one puertorican- with the same name.So the legal issue lasted from 1957until the late 70's, when the people from Modelo bought the name "Corona" and changed its formula. Oh it is sooo baad. No wonder why the dominicans mix the corona with Clamato (tomato & clam juice), that's the only way they can drink it.

Best Shawarma in Manhattan?

i have to say that i do not like Ali Baba or Mamoun's shawarma. My favorite shawarma place in the city it's a hole in the wall, really cheap place, on W 4St Btwn 6th Ave & Macdougal St, the name of the place is just "Falafel and More". My good friend from Israel -who is a foodie and and who visits Israel often- is the one who introduced me to this place, telling me it was the best shawarma in the city. I do not know if it is the best or not, but i certainly like it. Give it a try and tell me what you thought about it.

Raoul's --- a little help

Ok, thanks. Now..i am a little confused, because since i've never been to Lucien i did a search in this site and i saw some posts comparing it to Casimir, so now I'm lost, because i think Casimir is PRETTY BAD, the food is just Not good. I do like balthazar but i wanted to go elsewhere for his bday, i was thinking of Fleur de sel because i went the other day for another bday and wanted to go again but i thought it would be selfish, because even though I like the place, it's not really a Bistro and he said he want a Bistro, so I eliminated that option...So my question is: Is Lucien similar to Casimir in terms of food or is it more like Balthazar?
