Visiting from LA-must have pizza and pastrami.....and a bagel
Thanks for all the info. In terms of pizzas, as much as I want to go to Brooklyn I think it sounds like we just won't have time. I have an event I am attending so probably won't have much travel time, so I will probably stick close to Manhattan. While I love wood fire pizza I think I may opt for the coal oven style since that is traditional to the city it seems-or maybe if I have enough time and can walk up an appetite I can fit in both. Just as an aside, is there any other particular thing I should really have in NYC-I figure I will get pickles with sandwiches for instance.....but are there any little snackie things I should be sure not to miss or any restaurant near mid-town that is a must-not pricey (we aren't up for really expensive given the costs of the hotels in the city :), just good. I am not looking for just broad recs. here-more like "If I amy not get to eat in NYC again for a year-I would be sure to have this or eat here" kind of thing
Visiting from LA-must have pizza and pastrami.....and a bagel
Thanks all for the info. I knew we would be offending some with the comment on the sides on the pastrami, but I guess once you are hooked on the Langer's number 19 it is hard to give it up. If we are willing to go the plain mustard route, who do you think has the best bread? Langers crisps theirs at the last minute which helps with the bread mystique I assume.
Thanks so much for the bagel leads-we will definitely check them out. Also, for pizza a friend mentioned Arturo's on Houston for Pizza.and also said that Mario Batali has this new enormous place called Eataly: http://ny.eater.com/archives/2010/08/first-look-at-culinary-funhouse-eataly.php
Has anyone tried it or is it tourist only? BTW, we like Mozza "okay" in LA, but didn't think it was really special-so maybe we need to go back when we get back to LA......

Visiting from LA-must have pizza and pastrami.....and a bagel
We will only have 2 1/2 days or so in NYC-not nearly enough time to eat. But the things we really want to make sure we try are pizza, bagels and pastrami. All of our NY friends tell us that Los Angeles just doesn't have good pizza. We love the thin crust wood stove variety. Where should we go? We are staying mid-town but will travel. We would prefer to stay in Manhattan but it seems like the Food Network favorites are in Brooklyn. Are all the best places there or is that just hype?
Second on the list is pastrami-but the bar is high there for us since my hubby loves Langers in LA. It isn't really about the pastrami-it is the coleslaw and russian dressing and the perfect crispy rye bread. Any similar types in NY? We know about Carnegie and Katz and my sister mentioned a place called Veselka, but we are lost about which one to try so any help there would be greatly appreciated!
And last but not least-we understand we have not lived until we have had the perfect NY bagel-that it is all about the secret NYC water. So where is the best place......and please don't say ANY place-I know there has to be some favorites out there :)
I promise to repay with all my LA favorites for all you NY hounds when the winter rolls around and you decide you need some warm weather! We can't wait to visit your lovely city BTW-we are driving up from DC in a few days and are already thinking about all the good eating.

take away pasta in hollywood?
This may be too far West for you but cafe Vivoli on Sunset and Laurel does take away pasta that isn't bad-not as good as Mamma's but a bit cheaper.
Man Vs. Food: Carb Pot
So I see I made a Freudian slip-supposed to be Crab Pot....
Thanks for the input on the place BTW-I was afraid that was the case. So now it will definitely be either eat at home or Crawfish King :)

Man Vs. Food: Carb Pot
So, I am a long time Seattle resident who is now living in LA. We are coming to Seattle this week for a fairly long visit and I have been researching all the new places. But meanwhile I just caught the episode of Man Vs. Food at the Crab Pot on Pier 57. I don't think in over 20 years of living in Seattle I went there-or if I did, it would have been in my early days as a student "touristing" around.
Is it any good? I am lusting over great seafood and I like the idea of just crab in its purest form, but given the location I am wondering if it is good ar just a an over-hyped tourist place?

best 2 days of food in Santa Monica Area and beyond
We just tried out La Cachette Bistro in Santa Monica and really liked it. They have an express menu at lunch that is a great deal for $15, appetizer entree and dessert and you can also order a la carte. Also in Santa Monica on Main-we like La Grande Orange's homemade English muffins-the rest of the breakfast stuff is good but the muffins are spectacular.

Lunch in the Valley before heading up I-5?
Thank you thank you! Given all the advice we may try and get out earlier and try one of the places in Valencia, Gorman, etc. I promise to post any of the interesting places we find further north for any of you interested in the LA-Seattle route :)

Lunch in the Valley before heading up I-5?
Does anybody know some place to eat a good lunch before we head up towards Seattle on I-5? We live in Hollywood, so one possibility is to gas up at Costco in either Burbank or Sherman Oaks and then eat somewhere around one of those places before we head up the 5. The only things I have thought of so far are Krua Thai in North Hollywood and I haven't tried Vicious Dogs which is in that neck of the woods as well.
We aren't looking for something fancy but thought it would be a good chance to try something we might not normally get to otherwise. Any ideas are welcome-we love just about every cuisine. It would be great if it isn't TOO far from a freeway but we I would drive for something better than a Denny's just off the freeway :)

We really like La Cachette in its new location on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica almost across the street from the Loews. What is nice is that with its patio you can be dressed pretty casually and still eat a great meal.

If you like clam cakes then you may like the amazing green mussels at Jitlada Thai in East Hollywood on Sunset-it will definitely fit the budget. That is one of those addictive things that I would ALWAYS come back to LA for

New Hollywood casual restaurant alert-Juicy Burger
I finally actually went back to try the burgers. My husband tried the chicken on the ciabatta bread which was very good and I had a custom burger on the brioche. Both were very good. We split a medium fries and got out for under $20, so we were happy. I had the burger medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. I was okay with bread to meat ratio since the burger is juicy-it helps to have a bit of a biggish bun IMO.
Funnily enough, contrary to you, we thought the fries could be cooked a bit more-but we always like them extra crispy.
All in all I am happy to have them in the 'hood-an I like the owner-he is a really nice guy who likes what he is doing.
Where to buy or eat a great Pate en croute
We have an elderly French friend who still dreams of his mom's pate en croute. Doe anybody know a place that sells them? A restaurant would be okay-I think we have a had a good one on occasion at St. Amour, but a place to buy one to take home would be even better.
I was hoping one of the folks here might have a good lead :)

Quiet restaurant on Westside
2 places to think about but I am not sure about how quiet because I am normally there for lunch: Nook and St. Amour

Eva Fried Chicken
Great-so every Tuesday night? IS it still the all you can eat thing or just one of their specials?
Eva Fried Chicken
Does anybody know if Eva Restaurant on Beverley still has their fried chicken on any night-I read it was great but didn't see any info on their site. Thought I would ask the experts :)
tasty and inexpensive Mexican food
Is there anything outstanding further East say between the studios and the Costco in Burbank. We are in that area a lot and never can find someplace good to eat. Only thing I have tried there was Little John's Chili but would love some good Mexican.

For beer why not go to Father's Office in Culver City. Not too far from LAX and should suit the budget I think.

New Hollywood casual restaurant alert-Juicy Burger
Yeah these guys are hopping-I think they are filling a real niche. BTW, not much seating mostly counter I think-I wasn't paying attention since I ordered to go...but not even sure they have any tables. So just FYI
New Hollywood casual restaurant alert-Juicy Burger
So I just read about a new place that opened last week called Juicy Burger:
6340 Hollywood Boulevard (corner of Ivar just west of Vine)
Los Angeles, CA 90028-6303 (323) 465-8429
Even though I had just eaten lunch at home I was in the neighborhood and decided to try some fries because I had read, "These aren't just flash frozen potato sticks though, rather Belgian-style French fries, twice cooked and offered with a choice of one of ten dipping sauces."
They are indeed very good! Great sea salt and dipping sauces The best part is you get a burger and fries for $8. The owner said they loved The Counter but thought the prices were too high there-so wanted to build a better mousetrap. The are within spitting distance of Umami Burger on Ivar there BTW. I will definitely be back to try the burgers. Also note below the late closing hour!
Open daily from 11AM to 3AM.

Yamashiro's Farmers Market
We went up a few weeks after it opened just for dessert (bulgarini's of course) since we live near by. I had never tried it and it was soooo good. The goat milk with cocoa nibs was just as good as J. Gold promised. It was great because they offer 6 flavors there (choices changes weekly), ans they let you try 3 for $5. So for $10 my hubby and I got to try all 6-outstanding!
Nice patio places mid-city
Yeah celeb spotting definitely gets brownie points for out of town visitors :)

How is the food at the Cliff's edge? I can't believe I have never heard of this place-it looks fun and pretty reasonable.

Nice patio places mid-city
Oh and another question-is there some sort of casual "divey" outdoor places we should go (to offset the fancy meals) that would kind of be typically "LA"? I am pretty sure they have been to Farmer's Market but I was thinking more like Pollo a La Brasa or someplace we could go with just really good food and picnic type table dining. They are coming from Seattle and the weather has been awful this year so they are craving outdoor experiences :)

Bars with patios?
We enjoyed the open air patio bar at Beechwood in Venice-don't know if that is too far south? It is where Abbott Kinney runs into Washington:

The bonus is that they have a nice outdoor fire pit and the bar menu was really nice.
Moving to West Hollywood
We live very near where you are moving and 2 of our favorite restaurants of the moment are House Cafe: http://housecafe.com/
and Eva: http://www.evarestaurantla.com/
In terms of non-restaurant stuff , you should definitely check out the new farmers market at Yamashiro's on Thursday night. It is an amzing view over the city and they do valet parking for $2. You can buy stuff to picnic on. The best thing to try though is the Bulgarini Gelato (listed on J. Gold's list of 100 things to eat in LA before you die. He is one of our well know food writers here), the goat milk gelato with cocoa nibs is amazing!
The other place that might interest you is Hadar Kosher Meats near you on Fairfax:
http://www.chow.com/restaurants/18536/hadar-orthodox-kosher-meat
They have really good merguez (my hubby is French so I like to make cous cous :) Their prices are about half what the Farmers Market's Chez Marcel charges for the Delices de France brand-although I will confess the more expensive one has the more typical red coloring that Hadar's does.
