NYC Area - Eating Challenges

The Pullman Kitchen in Midtown East

Boozy Tribeca Lunch

Sorry about that. Only ever around on weekends, so didn't realize there was no weekday lunch.

The Copenhagen is open for lunch, though I've only ever been there for drinks and an appetizer.

The Harrison is another option, though I view it as more of a solid neighborhood joint than anyplace really worth traveling for in my opinion.

I had two bleh meals at Cercle Rouge a few years ago and haven't been back.

Locanda Verde is also an option if you want trendy.

Boozy Tribeca Lunch

Distilled. Solid food, good and creative drinks, and if it's nice out (hopefully it will be by late May), there are a couple of outside tables.

Challenge: various diet requirements and various locations

I think I went to the Village location of Gobo years ago and found it nothing exciting.

I missed the dates in your original email. All the posting about Dirt Candy is moot because it will be impossible for you to get a table with such short notice.

If Maoz is closed, there's a Moustache location a short walk from the Park. I've never been to that location, but the food in the Village is good, and middle eastern is usually among the easier options for vegans in my experience.

Another recommendation for Dirt Candy (and there will be no fake meat involved).

For lunch in Central Park, it's nothing particularly exciting, but there is now a Le Paid Quotdien in Central Park (just north of Sheeps Meadow), and they usually have plenty of vegan options. Further north, when I was there last weekend, it looked like they were opening a casual Maoz falafel concession in the park just off 106 and 5th, which should meet the vegan requirements with ease.

QUIET and accessible restaurant for lunch in Midtown

Kajitsu is fairly close and definitely quiet compared to the usual midtown roar. Is your friend in a wheel chair? If so, I might call because I don't remember if there is a step to get into their new location.

Tulsi is also quiet, but I think that's mostly because in my experience the food is average and the service slow.

Avra is a little louder, but in my experience, not terribly so. It also has some outside seating, which may be quieter, if the weather improves. Definitely no steps, as you can walk right in from the outside area with tables.

two vegans and a picky eater

On the casual end, Westville is vegan friendly and has a menu that should cover the pickiest of eaters.

Cricket-showing Bar

Try Cricketers Arm. They supposedly serve breakfast, so might be open that early.

What is around Duane Hotel?

Agree with Weather Up and Ward III being the two main cocktail bars nearby now that Silver Linings closed. I like the drinks slightly more at Weather Up.

If you are a big party (neither is huge), also consider Macao, though don't bother with the food there.

If you want wine one night, Terroir is the clear winner in my opinion.

west village cocktails

The Ambroise #2 is fabulous, but all my friends drinks that I have sipped on were interesting and tasty.

Lately, I've loved the drinks (and service) at Wallflower, though it's a bit further north.

Blue Ribbon Downing Street is only a few blocks.

Brunch. With small children. And vegan. Possible?

On the casual end, any of the Westville locations will also work, though even without kids, I'm partial to Hudson Square cause it's bigger and there's never a wait.

Best Dishes 2013

I'm leaving off the 2012 favorites that I repeated in 2013.

These are the ones I still remember:

Murray's Cheese Bar: Funkmaster cheese plate
WD-50: Edamame gazpacho
Hearth: Pasta dish I whose name I don't recall but I still long for
Dirt Candy: Tomato tart
Beyond Sushi: Sweet angel wrap

Per Se Salon question

If $100 is your budget, I would definitely go elsewhere.

Maybe they would have been friendlier and moved us to a table if we ordered a $300 bottle of wine, but we didn't want that much to drink after grabbing drinks elsewhere beforehand, and we still spent about $150/person.

Per Se Salon question

I have been meaning to post because we recently had the worst experience at the Per Se salon.

Arrive around 6:30, and they tell us that they are all full and don't take cell numbers, but to try coming back in 30. We are fine with this and go to the bar next door to get a drink. We go back a few times to check, and around 7:30, they tell us all they have is the bar, despite there being exactly two other tables filled in the salon. They also tell us that they might be able to move us to a table later in the meal (which they don't deliver on).

Food was absolutely nothing special, and despite being a small eater, I would have left starving after one dish (either that or I would have inhaled the entire not-that-exciting bread basket). Cauliflower appetizer was embarrassingly bland. Dessert was too sweet and dull. It wasn't just not in the same league as EMP. I've had better food at WD-50, Bouley, the Modern, the Gramercy Tavern and tons of other places throughout the city. Cocktails were mediocre for $25 and filled with cheap machine ice. Wine list mark up was insane.

Also, the bad service continued through the meal. Didn't explain dishes, never asked if we were done before clearing away the bread basket, tried to clear the dessert when we were only a few bites in and obviously still eating, never really checked to see if we would like another drink...

Will most definitely not be returning, and am crossing the main restaurant off my to try list.

lunch pre-fix suggestions ($30-$40 range)

I had the same reaction to a recent lunch at Juni. I thought the room was awful, and despite the fact that it was mostly empty, the service was very slow and food took a very long time to come out. While the quality of the food was very good, I don't think I'll be rushing back any time soon.

Need a location for a 30 person group, $25 per person (Wednesday 1/22, 6pm)

Try contacting American Flatbread. The space is massive and the pizza is decent.

Challenge: Dinner near Neil Simon Theatre

I know people like that.

Landmarc in Columbus Circle isn't exciting, but everyone will be able to eat there. On the more expensive end, there is Quality Meat, which, while a steak house, has the best vegetarian sides of anyone I've been to (though I would give them a call to warn about the vegan).

Another option, given the lack of common denominator would be to go over to Gotham West Market and each just get what you want.

Taboon.

Dad can eat steak or lamb, plenty of vegan options, and assuming your brother is in fact a kid, they will be accommodating.

Lower Manhattan chow near Ground Zero

Benares for Indian.

Nish Nush (Middle Eastern) for general deliciousness.

It's not a great area food wise. if you want good food, you should really plan on hopping on the subway (or in a taxi)

Coffee besides Starbucks around Battery Park???

There is also a Laughing Man coffee in the north part of Battery Park City. It closes on the early side but is open weekends.

Birthday location (bar/lounge) suggestions for my wife (and new mom)...?

One other idea might be the Lounge at Atera.

Recently went through the process of making reservations, and we were literally the only people. Cocktails were top quality and were reduced to $13, which struck us a great deal, we basically had two bartenders waiting on us, and the snacks are cool and interesting.

12 people would fill the room, but it's worth emailing, given that they seem to need business.

That's cause they are terrible.

I also don't know if I'd want to be outside this time of year despite the heat lamps (which you usually need to get bottle service to be near) and the used snuggies they give you.

I was also going to suggest Middle Branch because they've told me they take reservations for big parties for the top room, though it seemed like their policy varies by day.

Pegu Club is another one that takes reservations.

If you're planning to go this month, I'd start calling people asap, as I'm sure places will be booked with holiday parties.

I lost a bet and now I need to cook the winner a brilliant meal: best sources?

When I need more help than Astor, I love Chambers Street Wine, though, if it were me, to prevent you running around the city and being left with no time to cook, I would pick out the main shopping destinations then poll for nearby wine stores.

Maybe Terroir Tribeca? It's bigger than their other locations.

Gastropubs

Highlands is only a couple blocks away, and while better than average bar food, it's not Spotted Pig caliber.

Dead Rabbit is a bit further down and is totally unique and worthy of a trip to its out-of-the-way location.
