Getting Crispy, Scrapeable Rice in Calphalon Mini Wok
I should have been more specific evidently! We buy an organic, refined high heat safflower oil (by Spectrum Naturals) best for high heat applications like sauteing and frying. I haven't tried any other brands because we're on a tight budget... and because I am pregnant right now we're ONLY doing organic. I'll post back if I find another brand on sale that I like more... We get ours at Whole Foods or the local organic food co-op.

jim -- canola oil isn't safe for frying at high temperatures (i only use it for baking purposes). david and i use safflower oil instead for frying...
Doughnuts in Wine Country
Thanks for your suggestions, everyone! And thank you for enabling me! :)
I’ll post back as I try ‘em…
Doughnuts in Wine Country
Where is the best place to go in wine country for doughnuts? I am looking for homemade and delicious... preferably in Sonoma County, but would be willing to drive to Napa for a really good one.
Saturday Farmers Market in Santa Rosa?
Come to the Farmers Market on Saturday! On Wednesday it's REALLY small with just a few stands... (I still shop on Wednesday for salad greens, etc.) On Saturday there are MANY more stands...
I'm planning a trip to Napa, when do I go, where do I stay?
Also, during Crush you can eat the different types of grapes right off of the vine (as well as try out crushing grapes with your feet in the barrel) over at Grgich Hills.

Also in Yountville is Mustard's Grill, our family favorite. We prefer it to Bistro Jeanty... though BJ has better deserts!
Both spots are fairly affordable as far as fine dining in the area goes...

Taylor's Refresher is certainly fun although we personally don't think the food is good enough to justify the expensive prices. Their garlic fries are pretty yummy though!
Hana Sushi, any experiences?
We were totally unimpressed with Osake -- that's the place I was talking about above, where we were eating just okay sushi. And Gary Cho was the one working the sushi bar and serving us! Most disappointing.
I'll have to check out Shogun though. Thanks for the recomendation!
Wine country birthday spot
We're looking for someplace special to go for my birthday this year. In the past, we've eaten at Mustard's Grill for special occasions, but I'd like to try something new. Maybe Italian? Preferably in either Sonoma or Napa counties... Something upscale, but casual and fun. Any ideas? Thanks!
Mombo's Pizza (Santa Rosa) - Review
We LOVE LOVE LOVE Mombo's Blanco pizza -- mozzarella, ricotta, feta, garlic, basil... and their Florentine pizza too (with fresh spinach!)! Both of these are white pizzas.... (my husband is allergic to tomatoes!) We've been on a Mombo's kick lately and have been ordering a pie about once every other week. We both grew up on the east coast and love our pizzas. We’ve only tried a few places in Santa Rosa, but Mombo’s is BY FAR our favorite so far.
Santa Rosa shopping news
We stopped by today and were impressed. The folks working there were so nice!
They have Mochi ice cream (in a bunch of flavors!!!) and a variety of wheat/gluten-free items. Yummers!
Sushi in Sonoma
My husband and I like Ume a lot! I recommend ordering off their specials board -- always interesting, fresh, and really delicious!
Hana Sushi, any experiences?
I haven't eaten there yet, but on Monday I met a huge Hana Sushi fan. He says he's been eating there for years and LOVES it. And he told me this while we were all eating just okay sushi in Santa Rosa. I'm looking forward to checking it out.
Sonoma County Milkshake
I am looking for a great milkshake. Not something from Cold Stone Creamery, but the real deal. Vanilla, black and white, chocolate, pick your poison. Does anyone know of a place to get awesome milkshakes in Sonoma County?
Link from SF Chowhound's Guide
Reading the Chowhound's Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area and saw in the acknowledgments section a reference to: http://www.chowhound.com/chownews/sf.html. With the new site, the page isn't found. Perhaps a redirect to the something similar on the site would be appropriate??? Thanks.
Seafood in San Francisco
Thank you, everyone! We can't wait to work our way through this list!
Seafood in San Francisco
We went the Pacific Cafe last week (before I posted this query) and really enjoyed ourselves! There wasn't a wait (phew!), they greeted us with white wine when we walked in the door, the staff was very friendly, and we were pleased with our meals (tuna w/ wasabi, shrimp scampi, and baked halibut). I thought their potato wedges were quite bland, but the seafood entrees were really quite delicious!
Fresh Seafood Market in Sonoma County
Awesome! We'll check out the farmers market and vender in Bodega! Thanks!
Fresh Seafood Market in Sonoma County
We are interested in buying very fresh seafood in Sonoma County. We live in Santa Rosa, but would be willing to drive to the shore for the freshest catch.
We've seen what Whole Foods has to ofter and are looking for something more.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
