beef / red wine onion ravioli wine pairing

Hi

I have a middle course dish that I am looking for a pairing for. Just wanted some suggestions!

The ravioli are filled with braised beef and onions that have been cooked down in red wine. The sauce is a simple brown butter with thyme.

Before it is a salad and I'm using an insolia that I have.

After is a full on beef dish that's going with a nebbiolo.

I have a chateauneuf, but also a rosso di montepulciano.

Thanks in advance for advising!

Looking for the equivalent of JB Prince but for restaurant tableware. All suggestions welcome!

Thanks,

Fall fruit plate; am I resigned to fruit that browns?

I need to do a fruit platter that is seasonal. The obvious choices include apple and pear, but these brown and the plate will need to sit out for a couple hours. I have read about some apple varieties that are less prone to browning, but what about pears?

Any and all suggestions / advice appreciated!

kokekokko

I'm not sure, but one time when I was there sitting at the bar, some very nice regulars were sitting next to me. I asked them what they had on their skewer because I couldn't identify it. He said it was crispy chicken skin so I asked the waiter if I could order a round. He said no because it was a VIP only course. I was not offered a menu option including that and I got the feeling that VIP is something they bestow upon you... whatever.

That porridge is hecka tight though.

malta anyone?

yes, malta is a "non alcoholic beverage", otherwise known as soda,

it's a sort of coffee-ish tinted bubbly beverage. malt is a hard flavor to define. but anyway there are a several brands (particularly out of the caribbean) that make chilled soda malta.

btw, these are very good in cocktails as mixers. trust me. experiment.

malta anyone?

You didn't mention what part of town you're in, but I've seen multiple brands in many Latino supermarkets.

I get it at the one in Echo Park on Alvarado near the corner of Sunset, but that's my hood.

lounge/bar near hollywood

The Foundry on Melrose (on Melrose @ Gardner) has a really nice lounge area in the front half of the restaurant good for one person or many. Also, it has a full bar as well pretty nice wines in the glass.

The Village Idiot is good too, but is more of a pub. The Foundry's lounge is less frat-boy feeling. both are good depending on what vibe you're looking for.

WHERE CAN I FIND A MANHATTAN SPECIAL???

Galco's has them as the other poster mentioned, but they are Eagle Rock / Highland Park area. Don't know where you live, but I've also purchased them at Damiano's Mr. Pizza (on Fairfax just south of Melrose) as well as at Monsieur Marcel's market in the 3rd and Fairfax farmer's market.

Sapporo Reserve (the gold can)

Do these taste like the Sapporo Reserve at all? Just askin'.

Sapporo Reserve (the gold can)

Anyone know a place that sells this? I can only find the regular silver can Sapporo. I know the Bev Mo by me doesn't have it (the Santa Monica and La Brea location).

Walking distance from that intersection would be awesome, but please let me know anywhere you've seen it.

Cheers.

Guanabana / Guayabana

I bought a can of the guanabana nectar to use in a cocktail and a friend who is cuban insisted i was mispronouncing it.... he said it's guaYabana, not guaNabana, despite the spelling on the can indicating otherwise. I told him I though he was wrong and well.... now we have a bet.

I tried googling, but did not find a clear answer.

Thanks!

Guanabana / Guayabana

Are these the same fruit with regional difference in spelling and pronunciation? OR are they different fruits?

You're settling a bet hounds, so spell it out for me.

TIA!

Soup for a sickie

So I woke up with a cold today and now I'm craving a nice hot, spicy, sour, brothy kind of soup. I live in Echo Park and my too-lazy-to-think-of-another-option is usually Mae Ploy's tom yum kai, but maybe you all have better ideas?

I'd like to not do a ton of driving, so Silverlake, E. Hollywood, Los Feliz and Echo Park locales please.

Thanks!

Who can feed me a Razor Clam?

I've had them, but always randomly, usually as a special; Hungry Cat, Meson G (not around anymore). A quick google search yielded lots of Pac Northwest razor clam info and the "season" seems to be early mid-march. Maybe keep your eyes open thereafter.

Bowery and Magnolia

The Bowery smells bad, like a musty towel. I'd pick Magnolia any day over that joint. The food isn't mind blowing, but it's solid/decent, and in my experience, consistent. I've had a good tuna tartare as well as a good burger there (fries weren't bad either). They also have a yummy mint chocolate chip ice cream sandwich as one of the desserts.

The best places to go for soup(chowders) near silverlake?

Taix in Echo Park has a different soup everyday (Thursday is navy bean, Friday is Chowder day) but they carry french onion everyday.

You might also try a caldo (broth, veggies and braised meat) from Rodeo Grill (also in Echo Park, on Sunset east of Alvarado), I think it comes in chicken and beef, but they might have a seafood version.

Additionally, 15 on Echo Park Ave (near the corner of Sunset) has a decent tomato bisque.

RGR's LES tour?

Hi:

I'm coming to NYC in less than two weeks and have been perusing the Manhattan board for good ideas. I repeatedly see the LES food/walking tour mentioned, but I can't find out what it IS and where it goes.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

Best casual dessert place in LA?

The Alcove in Los Feliz is open until 11 or so and has coffees, teas as well as wine and beer to go with their myriad cakes, cupcakes, pastries, cookies, etc.

Osteria La Buca for gnocchi (and any of the other housemade pastas). Melrose and Wilton.

How is Cafe Flore?

Are you talking about Flore in Silverlake? I thought they were vegan which would make coco's post about their chicken kind of odd. Unless we're talking about "chicken".

Where can i find decent priced king crab legs in LA?

Not sure if you have a big Japanese market in Downey, but I saw them at the Mitsuwa in Downtown for a good price. Maybe in the 7-8 range.

CRAFT 3 Stars???? [moved from Los Angeles board]

Yes, J. Gold, equally, if not more recognizable seems more even handed in his measurements. I agree that his reviews feel more reliable. While I have witnesses extra attention being lavished upon him as well, I think he's better able to read between the lines.

CRAFT 3 Stars???? [moved from Los Angeles board]

Nearly everyone who's worked in enough reviewable LA restos knows what Irene looks like. You can see her and her hubby coming a mile away. Everyone from bussers, to servers to the line cooks goes into Irene mode, not to mention the Chef and GM. She has almost consistently overrated every restaurant I've eaten at and based on my personal experience (as a restaurant employee) I can see why. She gets much better treatment (more attentive from the front and back of house) than most folks do. I can't trust her reviews at all.

and to Diana, I've never seen her drink before dinner, FWIW.
