Olive oil anyone?

I have two EVOs that I like - and it sounds like our tastes may be similar (I don't like it to taste too "grassy") I like Sagra Tradizionale and San Guiliani (organic, although the reg. one is good too). I buy my 3L Sagra at Tosi's on Main and my San G at Santa Barbara on Commercial Drive

Serious coffee place in Vancouver?

As a somewhat disgruntled, but well-caffeinated, Brit, I`d like to point out that the deep-fried Mars bar actually originated in Scotland, not England.

going out for ice cream in yaletown,,,where?

If Bella Gelateria is too far, I can definitely recommend Yaletown Gelato at the corner of Davie and Homer and it's open late too!

Is there a (reasonably priced) or/and bulk nut store in Vancouver ..looking for RAW nuts..

How about Galloways in Richmond? They have a huge selection of nuts and dried fruits. I've never had rancid product from there. http://gallowaysfoods.com/

Chinese Restaurant Near the Wedgewood Hotel

Although I've never eaten there myself, Azia is about a one-minute walk from the Wedgewood. I hear it's quite good and features a number of Asian cuisines, including Chinese. Though, bear in mind, it sounds a little bit fusion-oriented. There's also the Shanghai Bistro on Alberni (across the street from the Shangri-La Hotel) - that's about an eight-minute walk from the Wedgewood. That particular neightbourhood, believe it or not, is a bit light on Chinese. Lots of Thai, Japanese, and Korean though.

One Seafood Dinner in Victoria

Fabulous! I'll map all three and let them do a walk-by to choose. Thanks also for the heads-up about Blue Crab - I had looked at that one I'll let you know which one they chose and provide a bit of a review upon their return to Vancouver next weekend.

One Seafood Dinner in Victoria

Help! I have only ever had dinner in two restaurants in Victoria (La Terrazza (?) and Matisse) - liked both of them but, now, I'm sending two European visitors to Victoria for one night. Both adore seafood (except oysters) and both like their food to be of impeccable quality and simply prepared. If you had one opportunity for a seafood meal in Victoria, where would it be? They'll be staying at a downtown hotel and will be walking everywhere. Thanks

New JJ Bean coming to Alberni St

That's good to know - something to look forward to..... Well, if JJ Bean is not going in there, then perhaps they are going in to the new building at Alberni and Bute (where the new liquor store will be). There are a couple of empty spaces in there still, I just didn't think any of them were two floors.

New JJ Bean coming to Alberni St

I can't help but wonder if they took the old Kaplan's Deli spot across the street from Brooks Bros. Given that it was a deli/restaurant before, it's already got the piping and ventilation etc. that it would need. On the other hand, it will wind up going head to head with Republic of Tea (or whatever it's called) and the Starbucks on Georgia (the other side of the building). No comparison I admit, but some of the coffee drinkers in this city have seriously defective tastebuds :)

Fast 411 on Hermitage on Robson

I haven't been for ages and thought I might take a visitor there tonight - there's a game tonight so everywhere will be packed and noisy. Due to a language problem, we need somewhere quiet but we need good food. Has anyone been there recently who could give me some feedback on your dining experience. I know the room is a bit "quaint" - it's the food I'm interested in. Thanks

Traditional Balsamic Vinegar in Vancouver / Lower Mainland?

Tosi's on Main Street carries a small range.

Traditional Balsamic Vinegar in Vancouver / Lower Mainland?

How about asking behind the counter at Cioffi? They have a lot of interesting things in there, but for the really expensive stuff, you have to ask!

Artisanal Coffee in Boston [Split from the "Must Go To Boston Restaurants" thread]

thanks to both of you for steering me in the right direction!

best places to stock up on san marzano canned tomatoes

Bosa's gets them - you can usually get a "by the case" discount. They also sell the giant commercial tins which can be useful for "the big sauce day".

Artisanal Coffee in Boston [Split from the "Must Go To Boston Restaurants" thread]

Hi Boston Chowhounders - I'm in Vancouver and will be heading to Boston for a week in May to attend a conference. Staying at the Ames Hotel, the conference, naturally, is at the Convention Centre with a lot of activity around the Westin. I'm pretty much fixed up for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, for meetings with international colleagues, but I really need to come up with some great coffee/pastry places for mid-morning and mid afternoon meetings (hate the hotel lobby routine). Anyway, although there appear to be some good suggestions on this thread, locating them is proving rather time-consuming. Could you visutalize the Ames and the Westin and imagining a straight line between the two - could you guide me to the best coffee places (great coffee, good pastries, seating, and not too noisy). Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I'm in a similar situation for cocktails but I'm going to see if i can find a thread for that :)

Cafe Barcelona-Vancouver

Thanks for the update misspastina. As many of you know, I recently queried about Spanish restaurants. A couple of CHers suggested Cafe Barcelona but with a couple of caveats. It doesn't sound like its improved much - looks like I'll be learning to cook Basque food (there are worse ways to spend ones time I suppose)

Trying to find... La Bomba paella rice

in Vancouver. Gourmet Warehouse sells it, but their large bags are past their best before date and the small bags are simply too small. Alternative sources anyone?

Jerusalem Artichokes in Vancouver

I recently went on a tear for these and found them at the Capers on West 4th.

Boboli

Sciue sells ciambella - which are the round doughnuts rolled in sugar and bomboloni (which they call "bomba") which are filled with nutella. The only thing is they're actually much larger than the ones you find in Italy - in fact, two "non-piggy" people could share one. A final word of caution, don't wear anything tricky to clean, the fallout is considerable.

Looking for a great Spanish/Basque restaurant in Vancouver

That's what I thought, Perhaps I'll try to knock up something myself :)

Looking for a great Spanish/Basque restaurant in Vancouver

I've got a Basque friend here on an extended stay. I'm looking for recommendations for a restaurant featuring Basque food (if there are any). Alternatively, a great Spanish restaurant might suffice.

Olympic International/National Houses - comments/reviews appreciated

I stopped in to Casa Italia on Thursday and I have to say they could have done a lot more with it - what a snooze! Anyway, there's a parm. reg. sampling station and, apparently, between, 12 and 1 each day, they do proscuitto and wine tastings (Naturally, I turned up at 1:15). Given that the house is only open 11 to 6 daily, it's a bit of a shame that they only do the best tastings for....FIVE MINUTES !!!! (clearly, it's run by the same people that run the Italian Consulate). Bottom line... if there's a queue, pass.

San Marzanos in Van

Keep an eye on Tosi's on Main Street - he brings in huge quantities of them two or three times a year. They're totally seasonal, that's why they're not always available.

11th hour request for Drake/Davie Street and Granville recs, Vancouver

How about the Twisted Fork Bistro on Granville (across from the Chateau Granville at Helmcken)? It's cosy and the food is great! super-close to the Yale too!

Anything nice open for lunch on Saturday's? Downtown preferably

As promised, I did catch up with Franco and he reports that he's not open on Saturdays for lunch anymore - only dinners.

ISO Large Bodum French Press Vancouver

williams-sonoma on Granville have a good selection of the larger pots .

What dinnerware do you have, and how do you rate it?

I spent months and months scouring shops for the perfect white set and finally chose Cellini by Villeroy & Boch. I've had it in daily use every single day for about 8 or 9 years and it's perfect. I've broken one plate and replaced it right away. It's a beautiful set and it's dishwasher safe. Apparently, it's fine in a microwave but I don't have a microwave so I can't comment on that. I would recommend it in a heartbeat!

Help me find European-made cookie cutters!

thanks for that! I'll check out houeonthehill. I always dry my tinned ones in the oven too to avoid rust, though on a trip to Germany a few years ago, I scored a couple of stainless steel ones - I think they're indestructable :)

Help me find European-made cookie cutters!

I have an assortment of cookie cutters that I brought with me to Canada from England. They look as perfect today as the day I bought them. All the cookie cutters in my local shops in Vancouver are made in China. Chinese cookie cutters rust, warp, and break. All of them are entirely useless. Has anyone got a source for European-made cutters? I'm in Vancouver but I would be happy to order online.

best store or retailer carrying wild mushrooms in Vancouver

hmmmmm, I'm sticking with my original thought that the harvest can, at best, be described as "pillaging" and, at worst, a scorched earth harvest - You know, a fungal clear-cut!
