Microwave / Convection Combo Oven - Any Good?

How long does this bagel operation take? Shorter time than in a standard toaster?

Store, extended warranty, and service for new Miele dishwasher?

Well, I've had it a while now and am just pleased as punch. It really cleans well.

For anyone else considering a Miele, I think that getting the water softener was really a good choice. Our old machine used to leave a faint trace of a powdery residue I could feel on the dishes and silverware. This machine leaves nothing but clean surfaces.

The condensation dry works very well also -- better than I expected. Through experimentation I have developed the following strategy: Run the machine after dinner. By bedtime it has finished the cycle. I open the machine and prop the door open with a kitchen towel just a couple of inches. By morning everything is bone dry and ready to be put away.

Food Scars - Things you will never eat again.

Deep-fried smelt. Forced to eat it as a kid. Now ANY fish except (very strangely) canned tuna makes me want to hurl.

Best Pizza in Orange County?

We have an authentic Neapolitan-style pizza place in Rancho Santa Margarita that I think is very good -- Pizza e Vino. http://www.pizzaevino.net/

Store, extended warranty, and service for new Miele dishwasher?

I love, love, love it so far! Cleans flawlessly. This model does have the top cutlery tray and it's great. Finding a good loading strategy is taking a bit of time but it seems to pack in more than I thought it would.

Well, we got our new machine. I decided on a Diamante Plus to add the water softener. I have done glassware by hand forever (everyday glasses -- not stemware), and it would be great if this feature makes that unnecessary. We went to a big but family-owned appliance place here (Renwes), and really liked the service. They recommended service through Miele and didn't think the extended warranty necessary, but said to get it through Miele if we wanted it. So nice not to get the usual pressure of the warranty! The installation will be through a Meile-certified tech so we'll have the 2-year to start with anyway.

It is being installed tomorrow and I'm excited. My wonderful DH wanted to go stainless (I was OK with white), and he insisted we change out the compactor and microwave at the same time to match. What a guy!!!

Low sugar or sugar-free homemade ice cream/sorbet or gelato recipes needed please?

Man, I've been MIA for a while (sorry!), and not sure if anyone cares about this anymore, but... :)

The Marie Callender's product is: Maltodextrin, guar gum, and xanthan gum. I'm still using it, but running low. The ClearJel did indeed suck. :D

I also switched away from straining my own yogurt and just using 2C of Fage 2% and 1C Fage 0%. So yummy, and much less hassle. Expensive tho.

And to avoid the defrost issue, I now divide the batch into 6 individual tupperwares upon making it. If I take one out at 6PM and put it in the fridge, it's just about right by 9:30 snack time.

Thanks Politeness. Very interesting!! Glad to hear you are still positive about your Miele. I have been washing dishes by hand for two months now and am getting really sick of it. :(

Store, extended warranty, and service for new Miele dishwasher?

Hi all,

We're in the market for a new dishwasher. Have a Kenmore Elite about 6 years old and have absolutely had it with the machine and Sears service.

Many great discussions here have me pointed at a Miele (it was that or Bosch). Most Miele owners love it and report few problems with machine or service, while Bosch owners seem split about 50/50.

So, if you have a Miele dishwasher (or maybe other appliance), where did you purchase it? And if you got an extended warranty, did you purchase it separately or at the appliance store where you bought the machine? Do you go through the manufacturer for service, go independently, or go through the store?

I liked the salesman we worked with at The Great Indoors here in Orange County, but he waited till the end to spring on me that they are in fact a sister company of Sears, so service would be through them (albeit with Miele-certified techs). THAT SCARES ME!

Any advice or experience on your Miele purchase would help us out a lot. Thanks in advance!

Lisa

Low sugar or sugar-free homemade ice cream/sorbet or gelato recipes needed please?

I have a Cuisinart, and make sugar-free, fat-free frozen yogurt. The basic recipe is:

6 cups good quality plain fat-free yogurt, strained overnight (reserve whey)
1 lb fresh or frozen fruit
3/4 c Splenda
2t Marie Callender's Quick Mix thickener
1T vanilla extract

Puree fruit in blender till smooth, add Splenda and thickener. Blend in strained yogurt. Add back in enough whey (if needed) to yield 5 cups yogurt mixture. Freeze with ice cream maker according to mfgr instructions. Makes 6 ~180g servings.

E.g. Strawberry is 125 calories for a 180g (6.4oz) serving.

This makes a very creamy and lucsious frozen yogurt (imo). It does freeze very solid, but gentle, attentive defrosting in the fridge does bring it back to the same consistency -- it isn't full of ice crystals or anything.

Two things: 1) I'm going to try to transition to stevia with the recipe but haven't yet. 2) The Marie Callender's product is impossible to find anymore, so I'm going to try Instant Clearjel instead. The MC product is just maltodextrin, guar gum, and xanthan gum.
