Ideas for tonight - appetizer at bar then takeout

So my wife and I are doing a mini date night tonight. We plan to grab a quick drink and small bite somewhere and then pickup takeout somewhere a short walk away for us and parents. Location: I am traveling from Grand Central to Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. Great if both places are near GC, but I am okay making one stop on the subway. The bar should have good food and mocktails. The takeout needs to be good, parents prefer ethnic, not fried; but open to non-ethnic too. Takeout needs to handle ~40 minute commute home. First bar thoughts in my mind are: Eleven Madison Park, NoMad, PDT, Death & Co. Takeout #1 choice would be Mission Chinese if they were open. Since they are not, thought of Hunan Manor & Zabb Elee jump out to me - benn to and like both. Other ideas? Obviously PDT and Zabb Elee are close to each other and on my list, so they are a good combo, but wanted to see if you all could come up with a better one. Any good takeout spots near EMP/NoMad? Any good bar options near Hunan Manor?

Have car will travel

Thanks for the detailed responses all! Would it be safe to assume I don't need to worry about reservations at most of these (besides roberta's)? can't wait to start eating through the suggestions

Have car will travel

So after living in NYC for 11 years we finally got a car. Now I am curious what the best foodie destinations are that have nearby free or cheap parking (or would work for a pick up and return to Park Slope area). I’d like these places to also be kid friendly if the suggestion is to eat in. I’ve done Arthur Ave. Chinese in Flushing is very high on my list. I’ve picked up Thai from Ayada in Queens (and will again), and plan to pick up pizza from Giuseppina's. What else should be high on my list?

Battersby review

I had been looking forward to going here for months and my wife and I finally got a date night without the little one. We showed up about 6:30 on a rainy Monday and were told the wait would be about 15 minutes (which it was). We grabbed a beer next door and they texted us when ready. Tiny restaurant and we were seated at the bar. Not a real view of the kitchen from out seat, but nonetheless it reminded us of sitting at the chef’s coutner at Dell’Anima in Manhattan. Overall we liked the food and would go back, all dished were good but there were two stand outs:

1. The Pappardelle with beef ragu (second course) – delicious! Best dish I’ve had in my first 8 months of living in Brooklyn (been to Al Di La, Convivium Osteria, and Saul also)

2. Rare wild king salmon (entree) – this was served with a nice, homemade chili/basil sauce

I did not order a cocktail, but after watching the bartender throughout our meal I wish I did. The other dishes we got:

1. Ruby red shrimp (first course) – not bad, but would not order again

2. Aspargus – served with sunny side up egg – my wife would’ve grouped this with the top two stand out dished. I also liked, but not quite as much as her

3. Short rib entrée – good enough but did not stand out

On last note, I do not usually care much about the bread, but the bread they serve here is great!

The Pines – Backyard

I didn’t see a thread on this so decided to start one. I recently went here with my wife and another couple and our two 1-2 year old sons (they had one high-chair which worked fine for our needs). Simply put, we were very disappointed. There was only one server/host in back and while he was friendly, he was not very clear in how the backyard system works (FYI – seat yourself, get water yourself, he’ll take drink orders and bring them to you, you go up to him at a counter to order food, no menus – look at blackboard). That lack of communication is easy enough to get over, but the food wasn’t. We were pretty excited to try this after hearing such good things about the main restaurant and decided to order one of everything (except one dish) on the small menu and then get more of what we liked most (each dish was $6). We didn’t order seconds of anything. Before I move on to what we got a quick note about drinks. Sitting outside was nice and I could see this be a nice place to grab an outdoor drink, but they only had ONE beer on tap and only a couple more not on tap. They did also have sangria and some cider. Another thing – my friend’s wife is pregnant and did not want to drink alcohol. Asked if she could have a sparkling water. Waiter said yes and then came back and said sorry, but I can’t bring out anything from the inside restaurant (come on not even a non-alcoholic drink for a preggo?!) He offered sprite instead, she said ginger ale would be ok, again he came back, sorry but soda is inside too so I can’t get you that. The only non-alcoholic drink we have is tap water….

None of the items listed on their online menu were available. We got:

1. Flatbread with spicy tomato puree – probably the best dish, but essentially just a quesadilla

2. Lamb bacon and potatoes – two skewers with a piece of bacon and a piece of potato. Ok b/c I like bacon, but NOT GOOD

3. Summer rolls – these were called “Banh Mi” summer rolls. I have no idea what was Banh Mi about them. I love both banh mi and summer rolls, but there was nothing flavorful about them. Very dull and the included sauce seem like stor bough duck sauce.

4. Grilled carrots with ranch dressing

5. Pork sausage on a roll

6. Grilled greens – more like burnt than grilled

"Tocque" to me about Tocqueville

Private room for about 30 in midtown

Looking for a private room in midtown. Will be 25-40 people. Upscale. Tao was recommended. Their room is the right size, they have the right atmosphere, right location, and it's at the right price point, but I'd prefer a place with better food. Any ideas?

Question re Wait Times for Danji, The Spotted Pig and Tertulia

made it at 6:15 and no wait for two. a couple open tables remained until we left. food was excellent and am ready to go back. anyone ever had the paella? it smelled delicious. on my list for next time. sablefish did not impress, but enjoy everything else. yellowtail sashimi and bulgogi sliders were the standouts.

Where should we go next?

Here's a thread that may be helpful;
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/814278

The menu for the dinner i went to was:
Oyster
shiso granite

Cured Sakai Salmon
heirloom potato salad, pickled red onion

Swordfish(maybe marlin
)charred green onions, arroz valenciano, saffron puree

Roasted Trout
farro, corn, bacon

Rabbit "Shepard's Pie"
braised rabbit, root veg, potato foam

Crispy Pork Belly A La Cubana
black beans, yuca, mojo

Key Lime Pie
lime curd, ginger snap crumble, toasted marshmallow ice cream

It's been about a month since I went, looking back, the dishes don't stand out as an amazing "I need that exact dish again", but more remember them as being creative and different than what you'd typically get. as an example, the rabbit shepard's pie was good and nothing like i would have imagined the dish - it came in a glass jug, the potato foam is not something i would typically like, but it worked perfectly in the dish. sorry, know that was a great description, but hope it helped some

Where should we go next?

Pan & sgordon - those were quite the posts - thank you! very helpful. I've been meaning to write-up my two most recent dinners out - recette and um segredo. fwiw these were both dinners with friends rather than my wife. at recette, two of us ordered and split 7 dishes, sort of just creating our own tasting menu. we both enjoyed it and i would recommend, however with so many places i want to try in the city i doubt i'll be back. my favorite dish was definitely the salt cod fritters with lamb ragu. we joked about changing our order to just seven of those. we also had: marinated hamachi, bone marrow toast, tuna, spaghetti, duck breast, and pork belly. all were good, but if i do make it back i want to try the oxtail & prawn lasange.

also went to um segredo for the hemingway dinner. very creative and tasty dishes. also loved the atmosphere. would go back as i feel it is so different than what you can get elsewhere, and it won't always be around.

didn't realize aquavit had changed a few years ago. i went maybe 5 years ago and was not impressed, will need to reconsider it.

Question re Wait Times for Danji, The Spotted Pig and Tertulia

Rather than start a new thread, I'll try to get this answered here: Anyone have experience of wait times at Danji on a non-holiday Monday around 6:30-7pm? I figure it should be super crowded, but they are so small, who knows.

SE Asian - Thai or Vietnamese - on the west side

Thanks for recommending Pure Thai Shophouse. Have been to Wondee and Pam plenty, but feel like they are inconsistent recently and was looking for something new. Ordered from Pure last night and it was delicious. Told them authentic thai style and spicy. Flavor was great, but honestly a bit too spicy - but prefer that to asking for spicy and getting bland food (white guy). Has anyone had look ordering authentic thai style and medium spice? I feel like when they Americanize the food, they also lose so much flavor, not just spice

Momma Browns BBQ - Mt. Pleasant, SC

Sue - we're headed down in a week and i came across this article:
http://www.postandcourier.com/apps/pb...

"Mamma Brown's BBQ, a Lowcountry staple of slow-roasted, pit-cooked barbecue for 14 years before closing in 2010 when its lease wasn't renewed, is back.

It's still in Mount Pleasant, just a bit farther up the road than its former Ben Sawyer Boulevard site. The new location is 2840 Highway 17, in a former KFC building near S.C. Highway 41."

So excited! have you been since they re-opened? Not sure how much eating out we'll do with the baby, but we'll definitely stop by MBs

Separately, any place to get good oysters this time of year?

Talde

finally made it here for lunch on saturday. thought it was good not great. my wife liked it more than me. wouldn't wait hours for a table or call it a destination restaurant, but would def return. was underwhelmed by the ginger bloody mary, guess i'd just prefer a normal spicy one. my wife did love her watermelon margarita though. we liked the dumplings and ribs, but not the lobster bao. bacon pad thai was good, but the tater tots might've been better. we also orderd the calamari (there were 3 of us) but they forgot it. despite that the service was good (quickly removed the calamari from the bill) and very friendly
