Carnitas's Profile
The New Sushi on Solano Ave, Albany
The mackerel tasted like in 4 hours it would be bad bad. At that moment I thought, "I've already spit the shrimp (which was definitely off) into my napkin..." and I swallowed it. The frozen/defrosted repeatedly, or at least that is how I interpret mushy was a white fish. I wasn't sure what it was. That was texture. The rice which should have been sushi was clearly a thin long grain rice. What is really odd to me is that Britt Marie's, next door, is the only other place I have ever been served something that has actually gone off---but what a great room. (Come to think of it there was a Greek place in Paris on a Monday night......)
The New Sushi on Solano Ave, Albany
Well, I went, and did not like it at all. I had the chirashi and everything was in huge chunks. It was gross. Some of the fish was not very fresh, mushy, and revolting. The rice was not even sushi rice. Never again.. I'm embarrassed for them.
Fresh Tarragon

El Cerrito DMV Taco Truck
Adrienne156,
You have never mentioned it. You harassed me to go to Zamarrano on Foothill. You also never mentioned the EC DMV truck.
El Cerrito DMV Taco Truck
I've been looking for a good burrito in El Cerrito, Albany, and Berkeley for a long time.
Yesterday, I had a carnitas (what else?) super burrito, w/o beans at the taco truck outside the El Cerrito DMV. It had some green in it, and they fill the bag with chips, $6. It was as good, or better, than anything I have had anywhere else in the East Bay. I'll be back!!!
Where to get cupcakes in East Bay?
Wh?ere can I get good cupcakes in Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito
Good and Cheap around SFMOMA
What is good and cheap near SFMOMA? Any cuisine except vegetarian.
Parm-Regg rinds
I chop them in 1/4 to 1/2 inch squares after they have cooked a while in my minestrone and then you do eat them. Wow!!!
SF customs-friendly food treats
You can't carry it on. Will they allow you to pack it in your suitcase?
Dinner suggestion for Oakland/Berkeley for Saturday evening?
I'd take her to Olivia on Dwight near Sacramento. It's a really cute small room, and has really great food. Oliviaeats.com
El Tucan no more
El Tucan , which used to be La Familiar on San Pablo in Richmond is gone and now there is Angel's-- Anyone tried it?
Morells?
I saw them at the Monterey Market last week but they wer very expensive. If I memember correctly $66 a pound
oooops...i meant cafe gratitude...
I'm a serious carnivore. I've been twice and have no problems with the food or the place. I think what they do and what they do it with is just incredible. I don't think it's hit or miss. I think it is just great and not at all expensive unless you are thinking " for no meat" If that's what bothers you think about the work that goes intoi it. I think it's a deal.
Quick bite in El Cerrito?
Has anyone tried Yummy sushi at the end or the row of stores by Trader Joes at EC Plaza?
Best local supermarket eggs
We used to have our own chickens out in the country so I know free range eggs. When we moved to civilization I tried every kind they sold at the Bowl. I settled on Humane Harvest as I thought it had the best flavor. But then they stopped having it for a while and I switched to the brown Petuluma at the Monterrey Market for $1.83 or something like that. They are pretty good.
Butternut Squash Ideas
One of my favorites is a Carnitas and Butternut squash Buritto. There is a place in San Rafael that does a Butternut squash Buritto which is where I got the idea. Everything else in it is the same as usual.
Sunday night dinner for 2 vegetarians and 2 carnivores in Oakland or Berkeley
I am a carnivore. I love meat. But Cafe Gratitude was one of the most exciting meals I have ever had. It was very filling, too filling, and delicious. The nut milk cheese is wonderful and the coconut cream pie (ore is it creme?) was just astounding. I'd go for it. I think there is more labor going into preparation there for your buck than anywhere else I can think of.
what to serve as sides with bolognese?
"Small enough" indeed. You're clearly not from Bologna.
what to serve as sides with bolognese?
Hmmm.. You don't serve it as a primi pasta course before the secondi?
Past Date Corned Beef
Last St. Patricks Day I bought 2 prepackaged vacuum packed Corned Beef. I ate one before the expiration date (June 2006) but am only getting around to the second one now. It has always been refrigerated. It looks perfect through the clear plastic backside of the package. It is corned which is an ancient method of preserving meat. Is it safe to cook for 2 1/2 hours and eat?
What kind of pickle on a Cubano?
I think the pickle and the pork make the sandwich. What kind of pickle. It isn't really dill. Any recipes?
Fried Chicken with a difference?
I use 1/4 to 1/3 corn or potato starch with flour for the rest becuse the wet buttermilk touches it and it sucks it up snd makes a nice thick crispy crust. I also use some bacon grease in the pork fat or lard. for flavor.
Where to find Solo Almond Paste in the Bay Area?
Solo, because I want to make my own amaretti and the recipe I found says not to use the Odense barand as it is too wet. Thanks for the help. Also the poppy seed cake on the poppy seed filling can is really good. Which Dollar store?
Where to find Solo Almond Paste in the Bay Area?
I just checked Andronicos, Whole Foods, Berkeley Bowl, Albertson, Monterrey Market. Does Anyone KNOW where they sell it? Also Solo's poppy seed filling which makes a wonderful pound cake? Thx.
Truffles black/white -
Anyone who says black truffles are as good as white must be French, because they are a shadow of the white. The white are transcendental- The smell a little like chlorine but more appealing. I just paid $20 for two small ones at the Monterrey Market in Berkeley. They were yummy on risotto.
