Thank you all for the input. Are there any restaurants that have gone downhill since last summer?

Returning to Asheville/Weaverville next month

Looking forward to returning to Asheville/Weaverville in July. Will dine at Curate, Limones, Isa, Cucina 24 and Stoney Knob once again unless you have heard some derogatory comments about them. Would love to know what has been happening in the restaurant scene in the area over the past year. Any recommendations?

Week end in Philly

We will be near the Italian Market area, but can walk or ride to a restaurant. We would prefer moderately priced as we are treating two others. One is a vegetarian who does eat fish. We like most foods but would prefer American with atmosphere for one of our dinners. We do love ethnic food as well. Also we know there are so many wonderful chefs with small restaurants in the city that we would love to experience one.

Just Back from Sicily

WE just returned from a drive around the eastern side of Sicily. The food was very good, simple and well prepared wherever we went. The Nero d'Avola wine was wonderful everywhere.
In Taormina we found the hole-in-the-wall spot recommended by the NYT for aranchini and it was wonderful. It is down the steps from the Piazza at the Duomo. There is a sign leading to it or you will see people walking with their food.We had a superb dinner at Ristorante l'Orologio. It is above the Duomo and overlooks the Piazza. It was a very romantic spot to eat at with candlelight and music coming from below. Had swordfish alla Pietro which was the best I had in Sicily. We did go to L'Arco dei Cappuccini which was highly touted as the best seafood in Taurmina. It failed badly.
In Siracusa, we stayed near Ortigia and usually ate there. However on our last night we went to Bugia two blocks into Siracusa from the bridge. We had a marvelous meal there. I have near seen as fresh fish anywhere but at the market which is a must visit. We usually shared an appitizer, a pasta and an entree. Love that the portions are not gigantic. Each dish we ate at La Bugia was fresh prepared and perfect. The restaurant is on Via Malta 3.
In Agrigento had another wonderful dining experience at Il Re di Girgenti. It is such a romantic place. It overlooks the Valle dei Templi. As you drink lovely wine and dine on perfectly prepared fresh food, you overlook the temples lit up for the evening. What could be more perfect! From the outside of this restaurant, it looks like a joint. However, once inside, it is beautifully decorated, candlelit, lovely music, perfect service.
Lunches were often pizzas. Seems they are eaten everywhere and are all delicious.
A disappointment was that we never saw a blood red orange. Wrong time of year. Great eggplant dishes. Pasta alla Norma was delicious as was caponata. All seafood dishes were great. Please let me know if you go to any of these restaurants and what you found.

ASHEVILLE, NC FOOD SCENE

We had a great time once again in Asheville/Weaverville. We had lunch and then dinner at Isa's and cannot say enough about the food preparation, the service and ambiance. It was a bit loud at first for dinner as there was a large table near us,but that resolved when they left. We cannot wait to return.
We had lunch at Wicked Weed, but returned after taking the La Zoom bus tour and explored the downstairs brewery. Quite a happening. Limones, Curate were as good as usual. Cucina 24 was fine, but not as special as our last time there. In North Asheville, went to Dough for lunch and was really pleased The food was delicious and the bread was terrific. They give free tastes to help you decideon which you want. .Will return for breakfast and most importantly....cooking classes. What a set up.

Returning From Asheville

We are about to leave Asheville and must say that we ate very well. We stayed in Weaverville and love Well Bred. Must have stopped there for coffee and something delicious almost every morning on our way back from our walk. Someone there mentioned a new bakery/market at 372 Merrimon Ave in north Asheville. It is wonderful. The breads are fabulous and they give you tastes to help you decide on which to buy. We had lunch here and everything was fresh and delicious. Brian Ross, the chef and owner, gives cooking classes in a large classroom set of for participation. Must try a class next year when I return.

Our new favorite restaurant in Asheville is Isa's Bistro near Grove Arcade. The Haywood Hotel provides free valet if you drive here. We ate lunch here and could not wait to come for dinner. We were not disappointed. Our server for lunch was Christine who could not have been more helpful. Our server for dinner was Andy who was knowledgeable, professional and personable.Duane Fernandes has put together a daily creative menu that uses local products. Everything is so fresh. Each dish is a picture. Isa's wine list is complete and comfortably priced. We had heard that the restaurant was expensive but we found just the opposite. Entrees range for the teens to the high twenties.. Although we do not usually have dessert, we had to try one and were not disappointed. Although it was a bit noisy when first we came, after a large party left and noise level was fine. The bar area is very trendy looking. Dining outdoors is another option. Look forward to returning on our vacation next year.

Other places we ate were Curate which was excellent, Cucina 24 which was delicious, Limones which was terrific, We had lunch at Wicked Weed andlook forward to returning to taste their many beers. We went to 5 Walnut for a glass of wine and to hear music. Stoney Knob in Weaverville was still good with an eclectic menu. When we were in Waynesville we had lunch at The Patio which was a delightful location. You order your food and it is brought to you outside on its patio.

For those who love The Admiral, I have learned that its two chefs have left. One opened Seven Sows and Bourbon and I do not know where the other is.

Sicily in October

We will be in Sicily about 9 days. Start in Taormina for a couple. Then drive to Sicacusa for another 2-3 days and then onto Agrigento for a couple. Our last day we will drive to Catania. It has been recommended that we stop in Enna on the way. Any suggestions would be welcomed and of course any restaurants much appreciated.

Returning to Asheville

We are now on vacation in Asheville. Yesterday we tried to get into Tupelo Honey but there was a wait. Went down the block to Isa's. We had a marvelous lunch there. There service was terrific. our food was delicious. Each preparation was perfect and a bit out of the ordinary. We are hoping to get back for a dinner as the menu looks great. The prices are about the same as most of the Asheville restaurants, not any higher.

We are not limited in our tastes. We would like bistro style food. but also like haute cuisine. Eat more seafood and fish than meat, but do eat meat. Would be interested in tasting typical foods from various provences. As you can see,it is difficult to pin us down! We enjoy eating!

Dinner in Savannah

Just returned from Savannah. I want to thank whoever recommended A.lure. It was great. We were surprised that it was as crowded as it was because it is so new. The wait staff needs to be a bit more seasoned but tried hard and were so pleasant. The food was delicious and well presented. We did not have time to go to Elizabeth's on 37th . A resident of Savannah told us that it has been sold and is not the same. I would love to hear from someone who has been there recently. Would have loved to try the Olde Pink House as well...Guess we are just going to have to take another vacation!

This summer in Asheville

Just got back from Weaverville/Asheville vacation which was wonderful. WE did not have a bad meal. The first day we were at Pack Square and had lunch at Bistro 1896. We were particularly impressed with its soups. We had dinner at The Admiral. We were surprised at the atmosphere. They even have a neon sign that says DIVE. As one of my kids said, "There was not one thing that went in his mouth that was not delicious. Another night we ate at Cucina 24 on Wall St. We had a wonderful evening, a great waiter and delicious food and wine. Every dish was beautifully presented. Really recommend it and the area it is in near the Grove Arcade. Lots of activity there. Had a lunch at Chai Pani which was yummy. Our last dinner was at Curate which was great. Each tapas was beautifully cooked and brought to the table as it was ready. The waiter timed our meal perfectly.
Now for Weaverville. We fell in love with Well Bred Bakery...the best coffee and terrific lunches. We adored Stoney Knob and went back there for a second time. It is such a quirky site and a pleasant find. The food is a mixture of Greek, Itallian and Southern. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. It is 10 minutes from downtown Asheville and worth the ride. I look forward to our return to NC in the future.

Dinner in Savannah

Thanks for your input. Will report back when I return in July as I have decided to try A.lure much to one of my friend's disappointment as Elizabeth's is her favorite restaurant of all time. I just think the menu is more interesting at A.lure and it will be fun to go to a new restaurant.
