Need a place for a small bite on the UES, with a baby in tow.

My 8-month-old has a doctor's appointment on 3rd Ave in the 70's. We are looking for a place where babies are welcome for a quick lunch/snack to meet up with some friends. Any recommendations?

Where are the Staten Islanders?

I am unique in that I am a Brooklyn-Staten Island transplant x2. I used to know many places on SI, but many of them have closed. I am now on a quest to find a nice place for my daughter's christening. Unfortunately my family would not welcome Sri Lankan fare either. So now I have to find something good either Italian or American. Preferably off Hylan Blvd.

How long does this stuff really last?

I just inherited a gorgeous bar from my Grandparents. . One thing there is still liquor in it. Unopened- rum, scotch, whiskey, vodka, gin, Irish Creme, sherry...everything except wine. I have no idea how old half the liquor is as they weren't big drinkers and didn't host many parties--especially later in life. I was wondering how long this all lasts or should I start dumping. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the stuff is over 35-year-old!

Coffee on Staten Island

Either or would be fine. It's just a pain in the butt to mail order from Manhattan or Brooklyn, they all charge double. It won't be so bad once I can take the baby out and about. I have at least 2 weeks until I get the OK from the doctor.

Coffee on Staten Island

I just moved to Staten Island and am essentially under house arrest with a newborn and can't get to my favorite coffee roasters in Brooklyn or Manhattan. Are there any places that sell good beans. All I have seen so far is Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts!

metrokitchen.com--anyone ever order cookware from them?

I ordered an All Clad 10" French Skillet from them on sale for $65 with free shipping about two years ago and had no problems with them. They sometimes have some really good sales.

How do you clean a pizza stone?

I just use sand paper and sand it down and then take a damp paper towel to remove the dust. I then let it air dry for a day or two. I haven't had a problem with it yet. I found it a few years ago and love it.

Curtis Stone to replace Kelly Choi as Top Chef Masters host

Kelly also had a show "Secrets of NY", before "Eat Out NY". I thought she had a bit of a "just watch me pose attitude" and didn't seem to be interested in learning NY history. She'll probably wind up on LX-TV on NYC's channel 4 or NY Non-Stop. You know it's all style over substance.

Cast Iron Problem

The bottom of my new Lodge Logic cast iron pan is all rusted after it was placed on top of a pot that had water in it. The cooking surface is still good, just the bottom was rusted. I tried to get some of the rust out with salt and water, but now it looks stripped and stained. Can my pan be fixed? Or should I make my husband buy me a new one--even though he denies he put it on the pot with water?

Three Thieves - new wine show on Cooking Channel

I will watch anything with Joel Gott. He is such a great guy. On a trip to Napa, my husband and I were getting a snack at the Ox Bow, where Joel was having a "meet the wine maker" food and wine tasting. He overheard my husband and I toasting our anniversary and sent us over the free tasting menu. Joel also took the time and talked with us about where to go and what to do when we went down to San Francisco. He also gave us a free bottle of wine.

Pizza wheels

The sale of pizza dough at supermarkets such as A & P and ShoprRite, (not the Pilsbury dough either) and pizza stones at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Williams-Sonoma make me think people making their own pizza at home is on the rise...no pun intended.

I can barely go one month without seeing a pizza recipe printed in a magazine or TV show.

I have a cheap OXO pizza wheel. It does the trick just fine. I use my cheap knife sharpener to keep sharp.

The decline and demise of professional food writing?

Unfortunately anybody with a computer and a remote interest on any subject can instantly be an expert if they have a blog. It's just not food writing. It's writing in general. Bad grammar is now the norm.

CHOW on NY1

I like the ideas I get from all the segments, but I'm kind of turned off by what I've termed the "square-eyeglass hipster experts." I also find that it seems like every place they go to is in either Manhattan or "comfy Brooklyn/Queens." They never seem to venture out of the trendy neighborhoods. I personally want to see them venture away from the L, G, and F trains. How about discovering a new place that is NOT in Williamsburg or Dumbo. There are many other wonderful neighborhoods and places to explore.

What's Next After Whole Foods?

The funky butchers, the hip fishmongers, the co-ops, and the celebrity chef approved charcuterie are all in the $3500 a month for a 2 bedroom apartment neighborhoods. Everything has to be trendy. Even the Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are in the "cool neighborhoods." I don't want trends or concept. I want quality, value, and convenience. I can educate myself on what to and not to purchase

I want a supermarket I can walk or drive to, that is clean, and takes my coupons. I'll celebrate the 40 cent pasta on sale during ShopRite's "Can-Can Sale," A&P's $1.99 Perdue chicken, Key Food's 10 for $2 yogurt, and yes Whole Foods for 2 for $5 Wolfgang Puck Stock. I'm also lucky I live in a neighborhood where there are hundreds of little ethnic groceries that I can get whatever specialty items I made need. Unfortunately, it's not a neighborhood that is deemed happening enough by AM NY or The NY Times for a farmer's market.

As for Frank Bruni he is paid to look for the next food trend. I'm not.

What do you HATE about your kitchen?

1) It's long, not wide enough for two people and a dog.
2) The "brand new cabinets" are not deep and I constantly have to tighten the screws on the door hinges,
3) It doesn't have counter space and the idiots that decided to put a counter right by the refrigerator and I can't fully open the refrigerator doors
4) the oven does not cook evenly and has been calibrated 4 times in two years-- my friend who fixes appliances called it "slum lord special Hot Point"
5) the floor has deep nooks and collects dirt like crazy.
6) The window was broken and doesn't have a screen or guard-- it was just recently fixed after 2 1/2 years of complaining to the landlord/coop board and super.
7) the giant hole under my sink to the pipes that my super made to look for a leak and still hasn't fixed it.

And that's just the kitchen....

NY1 Let's Eat

I haven't seen the Edible or Let's Eat reports yet, but today I saw my first Chow report. I don't know about anybody else, but I am tired of these rectangle-eyeglass wearing hipster types who use "toe-tah-leee" one too many times in their reports. I do love the Cooking at Home segments with Dan Eaton. He looks like he is cooking in a real NYC kitchen. I can't wait to make his chocolate crackle cookies.

Excellent Pies!

I saw a profile of them recently on the Cooking Channel. I pass by everyday on my way home from work and have never seen anyone in there. I have been curious about the salted caramel apple pie. The one time I attempted to go in, they were closed...on a Wednesday, 2 P.M.

My husband and I make jokes about how up until recently I thought it was a bar.

Michael & Ping's?

I had a Groupon for this place. Everything seemed really fresh, not the greatest, but good and tasty. I went there with my husband and mother-in-law, who happens to be the world's pickiest eater. She loved the beef with broccoli and moo goo gai pan, although she thought the wonton soup was pretty spicy. I also thought it was on the spicy side, but I enjoyed it. Unlike micki, I didn't think the portions were that small. We had leftovers for the next day.

BTW: I pass by 4 & 20 Blackbirds everyday and have never seen anyone enter or exit the place. Until I saw a profile on the Cooking Channel, I thought it was another (sigh) bar.

T-Day food prep injury count

2 burns on fingers--1 from cookie pan, 1 from hot sugar,
1 slightly sprained ankle from tripping over 14-year old dog in tiny kitchen
1 black and blue on knee from keeping glass bowl from dropping on floor because of 14-year old dog falling on me because it is hard for her to walk in tiny kitchen.

This was just from making cookies...I'm making my turkey tomorrow!

Nothing to get. You just don't like it. I hate truffles. I don't care if they cost more than a months rent. I don't like them in any way shape or form. Then again I don't like any kind mushroom or fungi.

Do Americans only have Thanksgiving dinner on the Thursday?

There was on in Brooklyn and in Staten Island. I think the one in Brooklyn was at Kings Plaza. My grandparents always went there. I always wanted to go with them. I never had the chance. From what I remember it sounded like a Beefsteak Charlie's (remember them?), with the all you can eat shrimp and salad bar. The one in Kings Plaza became a ChiChi's, then a Red Robin, after that Redheads, now it's an H & M.

Frozen Turkey????

My mother has a frozen turkey that she had since LAST Thanksgiving. She wants to roast it (not for Thanksgiving) so it doesn't go to waste. It's been in a freezer almost a year, how long can a frozen turkey stay frozen without going bad?
