Can't go wrong with beer, particularly a Belgian beer. I'm a bit of a beer snob, and I dig Dogfish Head, Ommegang, and Stone Brewing Company. Anyone that makes a beer called Arrogant Bastard is a friend of mine.

The New York Cookbook by Molly O'Neill. Fantastic receipes and fantastic stories about the various cultures that have influenced the Big Apple. It's still my favorite.
