Palin in Touch with Turkey Slaughter, Out of Touch with PR Tactics

Wow! You mean turkeys actually are slaughtered at a turkey farm?! I had no idea! I thought the "Meat Fairy" dropped them off in nice packages at my local grocery store. Wow, what a dumb move by Governor Palin to actually be associated with this gruesome task! I mean the nerve of being near birds slaughtered so they can be put on our tables. Has the woman no shame?! Tisk, tisk.

ISO best of the keys

We too stopped at Alabama Jack's on the way down. We shared the fried platter for two and it was great. Sometimes you get fried items that are really greasy but it was actually really good. The only negative is that the crabcake had too much filler.

We also stopped at the Hungry Tarpon on the way back. The food was relatively good (although I had a really bad cold and couldn't taste as much). Loved the atmosphere of the place.

In Key West, we went to Pisces. Great food but rather expensive for what you get.

Thanks for everyone's recommendations!

Have you ever "trained" yourself to eat something?

Aggh! That's horrible!! How can you not like beer?! I mean, good beer, that is, but that is something to work on people!

Salsa and bruschetta -- that's about it for my tomato consumption. The texture just throws me. I've never really liked them and I have really tried -- and tried. Roma's are really the only tomatoes I can stomach (if at all).

Enchilada House in Frederick MD

Wow, very exciting to hear. And they have Horchata (the rice - cinammon drink you mentioned Mary Ellen)! It's on the other side of the moon for me, but I do go to Western Maryland on occassion and I'll have to give it a go.

Dried Corn Husks in Bowie/Annapolis area?

Latino markets are truly your best bet. There are a lot around here -- you just need to know where to look. In Annapolis, try Anita Spanish Grocery:

1900 Fairfax Rd # 1
Annapolis, MD 21401
(410) 295-1210

It's clean and it has a big selection. I get my stuff there to make carne asada.

Tamales are great fun to make and a lot of work! Best of luck.

So in essence we touristas need to stay away from the square grouper, right? ;-)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll be making the trek next weekend from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West. Should be a blast. I appreciate the help!

Single Malt Scotch Selections

Some-what related, but Bay Ridge Wine and Spirits in Annapolis is having a huge sale on single malts this month. Each week in January they will give a percentage off scotch -- 5 the first week in January, 10 the second week and 20 the third week. You might want to call to confirm the dates and times, as the deal is not on their website but I have heard the ad on WRNR -- http://www.bayridgewineandspirits.com/.

Sam Zien, The Cooking Guy

Sam's awesome and totally fun to watch. His recipes are great as well. He got his start on San Diego County's TV network and I was so stoked to see that he's gone national. If you haven't seen him, do give him a gander.

Annapolis/Eastern Shore Restaraunts

I've eaten at Restaurant Local and Bistro St. Michael's -- both are good. For real Eastern Shore flavor (and cheap eats), stop at Holly's. They have oyster stew if you ask for it. In addition Lisa's Small Plates is great and has bands on the weekends.

For Annapolis, I'd go for Joss (sushi), Lewne's (steak), OB Prime (steak), Boat Yard Bar and Grill (casual, sailing-themed).

Have fun.

Cheese shop in San Diego

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. I ended up going to Venissimo and it was a great hit. It was slammed when I got there, but definintely a great gift to give for someone who has everything. I greatly appreciate the assistance!

Annapolis Dinner Thursday Suggestions

For sushi, try Joss on Main Street or futher up West Street, you have the Metroplitan Restaurant. Joss is more low-key but great food and the Metroplitan is a bit more upscale.

Cheese shop in San Diego

Agree, their website looks awesome. I think I may go with Venissimo, but if there's something closer to North County Inland, that would be great as well.

Cheese shop in San Diego

Funny you should mention it, but I was about to ask the same quuestion. However I'm looking for a great cheese shop / meat shop / wine store in San Diego North County, preferably inland North County. I moved away four years ago and I'm just clueless as to places to go.

Is Tip Top Meats in Carlsbad still around? Their website doesn't seem to be working after a Google search. I thought they had fantastic stuff and wonder if it has changed.

Thanks for everyone's help in advance.

Food and Wine festival '07 @ Disney's EPCOT, Orlando, FL

OK, feeling a bit sheepish here, as this is the first time I've even heard about this event and I'll be down there next weekend on business. Glad I read this board, so thanks all!

I've never been to Orlando, but I have gone to Disneyland more times than I can remember. Does it REALLY cost $75 to get in now?! Whatever happened to E tickets? OK, dating myself here...

I found the program online (http://adisneyworld.disney.go.com/med... ) but I cannot see where you call to register for some of these events. It looks like some are included in admission, some are not, and some you have to pay an additional fee with your admission. Help! A bit confused. What am I missing? And can I buy these events online like I can the park tickets? It looks like I save a whole four dollars (whoooo!) if I buy online. No AAA discount Mickey? What gives?

BTW, any recommendations for next weekend's events?

Thanks for everyone's help in advance.

Philly Chows Visiting Annapolis - HELP

Agree with all yoru assesments. Lemograss would be a nice, non-pricey place to eat and the food is good. You can also park right next door to Lemongrass and walk down West Street to Main. This weekend should be great for that.

Breakfast and lunch in Annapolis?

I agree with Double T.

Another great breakfast place is Grumps in Eastport (http://www.grumpscafe.com/). The owners have a great sense of humor and they make a mean breakfast.

In the same area (lunch) you can go to the Main Ingredient (http://www.themainingredient.com/). Great salads.

anacortes

Just visited Whidbey and I highly recommend the Rockfish Grill. Excellent food and great beer. Also close by in La Conner is the La Conner Brewery. They had a brown ale that reminded me of Newcastle. Very tasty pizzas as well.

Whidbey Island Red Velvet Cake?

Thanks so much for the help. It was an odd request, and I'm glad I got the scoop from a local. Thanks.

Saint Mary's City

Hmm...you know what, I don't remember what kind of beer I had, but I don't remember caring too much as the oysters and ambiance was awesome. I'm pretty picky about beer as well.

Saint Mary's City

The festival is truly a local gem and gives you a real taste for the real Southern Maryland. My boyfriend and I went for the first time last year and had a blast eating a ton of oysters, so you really won't need to eat elsewhere. They have plenty of beer as well.

Whidbey Island Red Velvet Cake?

A friend told us that she had the best red velvet cake on Whidbey Island. Can anyone tell me where a bakery is on the island that makes it? From what I understand, it's a speciality. We'd like to bring a cake back for our friend.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Pasta in Annapolis

Luna Blu is pretty good and definitely a better deal than Osteria 177 and Maria's. Haven't been to Piccola Roma though.

Suggestions for 21st Bday in Baltimore Annapolis

I agree with Lemongrass and the Metropolitan. Lemongrass doesn't take reservations, however.

The James Beard Foundation's Taste America

I'm sure it's been posted elsewhere on this site, but the James Beard's Taste of America is coming to countless cities September 28-29. Check out to see if it's coming to your city as it looks like a blast!

I second Aldo's. It's great.

brunch in annapolis area?

It's called Thursday's. If you're facing Pirate's Cove, it's to the right.
