Picnic/takeout/quickie stuff near Art Institute?
I thinks she's interested in both, picnic-y and hotel friendly foods - sorry that was a bit unclear. Also, she is very active, and is used to crazy long walks, so a mile or two is not a problem for her. Thanks for the website!
Picnic/takeout/quickie stuff near Art Institute?
Chowhounders - I need your help! My friend from NY is going to Chicago on business, and staying near the Art Institute. She was supposed to make the trip with a friend and explore the city together, but now the friend has bailed. She's uncomfortable going to restaurants alone, so she asked me for recommendations for places she could go to get stuff to have in her hotel room that is yummy. Unfortunately, I grew up in the near north suburbs and moved away from Chicago over 10 years ago, so I couldn't think of anything in the area, except for Fox & Obel. Any suggestions, along with must have picks at these places??
Many thanks!
wedding site for people who love food?
Congrats, Olive123! We just got married a month ago, and we had our reception at a Spanish restaurant in Norwalk, CT called Meigas. Where are you looking to get married? I know that Spanish food is not what one normally thinks of for vegetarians, but they offered really good food to our veggies, and everyone thought that the food was stupendous. The staff was unbelievable, and the price was really great. If you want more specific wedding-y advice on budgeting and wedding planning, you can email me directly: salleykoo [ at] aol [dot] com
Advice for a Stony Brook student?
Thanks, everyone, for the great tips! I've tried Sushi Ichi, green Cactus, and Curry Club, and agree that they are good, but not great. Toast and Maureen and Daughters sounds really fun, I'll have to check those out. I've heard from friends that Ruvo is pretty good but expensive, and not really worth what you pay - any thoughts from you hounds?
Been to John Harvard's, which was ok, but I think their appeal is perhaps in their interesting beers? Don't drink beer, so it wasn't as fun for me.
I DO have a car, and am willing to drive (I actually live in NYC and drive out here at least three days a week for school), so any suggestions you have that are only accessible by car are greatly appreciated!!
Advice for a Stony Brook student?
I just started my doctorate at SUNY Stony Brook, but I took some time off, so I'm a bit older than my classmates. Whenever my friends and I try to go out to eat, my main request has been: "No buffets and no chains." This is met with blank stares and "Um, that's going to be hard." While I had a hard enough time with Chili's, Cheesecake Factory, and Applebee's when I was a teenager, I really cannot stomach it now. Adding insult to injury, these places often have an HOUR wait!! Any advice on your favorite places? I've done some searching and found some fancy places that are probably out of budget, but any cheap to middlerange suggestions?
dog friendly in new haven?
This isn't a restaurant, really, but if you let your dog eat ice cream, Ashley's lets you bring your dog in and will give your dog a scoop of sweet cream. My dog loves it. Also, Wentworth's up in Cheshire makes K-9 Crunch for dogs, which is sweet cream with dog biscuits in it.

shoogirl49, where is lupi legna's? I haven't been able to buy sfogliatelle outside of Arthur Avenue in the Bronx!
Brattleboro Suggestions?
I spent three summers in Putney and would often go to Brattleboro to eat, but be forewarned that this was about three years ago, so my suggestions might be out of date. There is a little bakery called Amy's on the main drag that has really excellent sandwiches and some of the best cookies I've ever had. They are open for lunch, and I ALWAYS stopped there. The times I went there, the Korean place was ok but not great - I would go there when I started to get desperate for Asian food - and it was definitely not anywhere near the places in Koreatown in NYC or Flushing. The Coop always had really great baked breads and scones and a wonderful selection of local cheeses that were delicious. Have a wonderful time and be sure to report back!
Recs for AMAZING cake to feed 130 in Fairfield County?
Hey hounds! Do you have suggestions for a place that can make GREAT cake for a party for 130 people? The party is at a restaurant in Norwalk, and I need to outsource the cake. The recs I have had so far are: SoNo Bakery, Great Cakes of Westport, and Sweet Lisa's Exquisite Cakes in Greenwich. I've been to SoNo Bakery, which was lovely, but have any of you had any experience with the other bakeries or have any recs of your own?
Breakfast in Southport or SoNo, CT
SoNo Bakery is in South Norwalk and serves wonderful breakfast!
Pizza reviews: Lombardis/Di Fara/Sally's/Pepe's
LVI, great , great post! I realize that this is an old thread, and there is a lot written about this already, but I just wanted to add some additional info that might be helpful from someone who was raised in Chicago, has lived/worked in New Haven for over ten years, lived steps from Modern for three years, has a fiancee who is OBSESSED with Sally's, and has lived in NYC for the past two years. Chicago style pizza is not for people who like NY pizza, but if you go to have it, make sure you go to a great Chicago style place like the original Uno's, Pizzeria Due, or Gino's East (um, also, I left Chicago about fifteen years ago, so things may have changed). Like I said, the bf is obsessed with Sally's, so we go about once a week. The best pie there, in our opinion, is the large, "mootz" (mozzarella cheese), with garlic. It has to be large and it has to be eaten there. If you get a different size or takeout, it's not as thin. The service drives me crazy, and the inconsistency can be maddening. However, the bf claims that the elusive Sally's perfect pie is a thing of beauty, when it's uniformly thin throughout, just the right crispiness balanced against chewiness, the right amount of sauce melding seamlessly into the cheese and the slick of oil on top, and just the right smattering of garlic. I have less patience, but the perfect pie really is amazing. BF lived in California for a while for school, missed Sally's like crazy, and dreamt that he was eating a slice only to wake up realizing that he was chewing on his night mouth guard! I LOVE the clam pie at Pepe's, which is no relation to the clam pie at Sally's. It's the best pie there by far. Modern is wonderful, pretty uniform in consistency, but not as revelatory, in my experience. My faves at Modern are the margarita (only available in small size), and they do very good white pies with eggplant. And nothing really compares to DiFara's, but the wait there can be unbelievably bad. Bf loves the sicilian plain slice and I LOVE the thing slice with fried artichokes on top, but only when the artichokes are fresh - canned are no good. Just my advice for y'all.
